Side By Side / whoah ! did not expect the heat buildup
« on: September 12, 2022, 12:51:26 AM »
I've had m uxv450i for several years (got it new late in 2015) it wasn't till last year that I put a windshield on it, and today, I put a fabric roof on it. I did not expect the cabin to get so hot, so quickly, and no doors or back window,  Luckily, I can open the windshield, the airflow lets the heat escape

it'll probably be nice when plowing snow

General Discussion / Dealer coming to pickup my AK550
« on: August 25, 2022, 05:49:30 PM »
Battery dead,  no keyless workey

stupid me, forgot to turn the bike off, 2 days later when rain stops, nothing works, I removed the windshield, front panel, hooked up battery charger, 24 hrs later still dead battery

Call dealer,  they are sending somebody right out. It's nice to be a friend of the owner, in the meantime, I got my K-Pipe, but my Post Office Box key is still locked in the whale belly of the AK

General Discussion / New AK550 owner
« on: August 05, 2022, 08:51:09 PM »
I finally decided it's time for a scooter, I'm old (relatively) fat, and limited range of motion, even having an issue getting my leg over my K-Pipe

This will be my 3rd Kymco #1 UXV540i #2 K-Pipe and now #3 the AK550, along with an '07 V-strom 1000 (I need to bring a step to ride that)

Gonna hafta read the owners manual to learn how the keyless stuff works

forgot my camera, beautiful day on the mountain, high 50s/low 60, light breeze, a better than average day
but I did get my sticker

200 miles for the day, and 4 fill-ups,  the K-pipe is not that economical with a 190cc

Kymco News / conversation with local dealer
« on: April 22, 2022, 07:53:49 PM »
Owner of local dealership called me yesterday, to talk about some work I did for him. But the topic of Kymco came up, we talked about the engine swap in my K-pipe and the conversation turned to parts,

he said Kymco  parts orders are starting to come in again, and that he got 50 unanticipated new scooters from Kymco for the showroom

Side By Side / 450i shifting again
« on: February 16, 2022, 09:10:18 PM »
The shifting is notchy enough in temperate days, below freezing, close to zero out, I can't get it moving, as if the lockout button is frozen and can't push it all the way down, I've gone so far as tap (gently) the button with a small hammer while trying to move the lever, usually, once I go thru the gears once, I have the strength on my thumb

is there something I can spray WD40 on ?

General Discussion / Progress on my K-Pipe
« on: February 12, 2022, 08:25:26 PM »
Late summer of 2019, I ran my K-Pipe out of oil, no confidence in just doing a top end, and Kymco does not sell the whole motor as a unit. So I started looking aftermarket, and bumping up the cc. Originally looking for a 140cc, but before I knew it, there were none in North America.  I didn't really want to go all the way to 190cc, but I found one and it arrived a few weeks ago

I'm not doing this myself, I'm paying my dealer, they came and picked up the bike and engine last Thursday, I stopped at the shop this morning. The motor is physically in the bike now, working on melding the electricals to get it started. I will lose my gear indicator almost assuredly. I hope to keep the neutral light, vacuum petcock will be gone and replaced with a manual petcock

the engine is mounted with only the 2 rear mounts, there is no provision for a front mount on the new engine

the exhaust will be a project, as well as mounting the oil cooler,

next time I stop by my dealer, I will have my camera

I'm hoping the 190 will give it the ability to maintain 55mph with my lard ass and barn door torso,

Side By Side / Snowplowing
« on: December 19, 2021, 10:03:10 PM »
I just finished my driveway from our first storm this winter, between 5 and 6 inches, I got a new wider blade for my plow, up to 66" from 60"  it makes all the difference in the world, cuts my time in half

the other surprise I had, is I still have my street tires on, they grip good, but if things get icy, I'll probably have to put my set of tires with chains on

I'm looking for a way to remount my winch higher, or a pulley, so that my winch lifts my snowplow, rather than straining the rope from the low stock angle

or any other suggestions

Side By Side / trailering with a windshield on an open trailer
« on: August 30, 2021, 11:16:09 PM »
just what the title says

my windshield instructions say not to trailer it on an open trailer, I am not going thru the process of removing it and reinstalling it

I was thinking of some wooden 2x4 braces that I would keep in place with ratchet straps, or is that even necessary,

do I really have anything to worry about doing a 3hr tow @65-70 mph,   it's only 20mph faster than I drive my UTV when I hit open road

Side By Side / news from my dealer
« on: June 18, 2021, 12:25:43 AM »
after putting my new tires on, I drove it to my dealer for annual service & repair work, It was klacking in 4wd when backing up, and no brakes

and I drove nearly 10 miles to my dealer, hitting almost 50 most of the way......eeeeek! BROKEN FRAME in front

they are sending it out to a local fabrication shop, the same one I use for my projects when needed, I have full confidence it will come back stronger than new, with plenty of extra gussets,

Good news for me, everything can be fixed local and not have to wait all summer for parts

take the plow off, switch wheels, and get my chains off

General Discussion / K-pipe engine decision
« on: September 26, 2020, 05:31:26 PM »
my kpipe went tic tic tic, lost all its power and died, discovering there was no oil, don't even want to waste my time doing top end, just going to replace with a crate motor

at the same time bump from 125cc to 140cc, but, no 140cc e-start/std trans available, a month ago, before I was serious, there were several, now only semi-auto,  or bump up to 190cc

this is my decision, buy 140cc semi auto, direct bolt in, except I lose my clutch, or a 190, I will also have to replace exhaust, and fiddle with wiring, the 190 will also give me a 5 spd

either way, I'm adding an oil cooler
