General Discussion / Re: Thinking of selling
« on: May 06, 2023, 04:20:11 PM »
I just turned 79 years old. In the fall of 2021, I bought a new 2021 X-Town 300i abs. I didn't ride it too much the last year. The scooter has less than 700 miles on it. It's black & blue with a Shad top case (w/taillight) and a Puig windscreen. I also installed LED head and running lights, cockpit GPS bracket, and a 12-volt accessory plug for a Battery tender or a GPS. I took it out this spring. I was sitting in my driveway, and the scooter started to tip on me. I couldn't hold it and it tipped over causing several small scratches. I got out from under it ok but could not pick it up by myself. Now I'm nervous about riding and am thinking of selling. I'm wondering what a fair price would be and if there is a market for this model?

I had exactly the same experience a number of years ago, except that it was a Honda 500 that I couldn't stop from falling and couldn't pick up. So, I sold that bike and bought a 150cc scooter; I've since moved to my Kymco. If I was you, I'd see how manageable a smaller scooter feels, rather than abandoning riding completely. Good luck!

Many years ago, I kept a Bultaco Matador in my living room for several winters. During the Christmas season, I decorated it with lights.

It looks like this outfit may have them:

General Discussion / Re: fixing the dreaded SHUDDER at takeoff
« on: May 07, 2020, 01:22:27 PM »
Prior to the Kymco, I had a Piaggio product that had a press-on cap on the outside of the clutch bell. Whenever shudder developed, all you had to do was pop off the cap and blast the dust out of the bell with an air compressor; it cleared up the problem immediately. When I bought the Kymco, I noticed shudder as soon as I drove away from the dealer, but hoped it was just some temporary condition resulting from newness. Since the Kymco has no convenient access to the clutch internals, I was worried about how involved it might be to solve the problem if it didn't clear itself up. Well, 8 years have gone by and the shudder it still there, but to a much less-noticeable extent; nowadays it doesn't seem to happen on take-off, but only occurs when accelerating lightly in a low-speed traffic crawl. Since the clutch has never been touched, I attribute the lack of significant shudder development to the fact that I always accelerate briskly on take-offs, thereby minimizing clutch slip.

Are you sure it isn't simply overload of the under seat storage area? I find that, if I pack too much stuff in there, the upward pressure on the seat pan makes it difficult for the latch to release. Try applying downward pressure on the seat, while holding the key in the release position.

Yager GT 200i / Re: Spring is here, time for scootering

I ride all winter as long as the roads are clear, but it's been pretty cold this year. And now the we're finally getting into days that are fit for human consumption, the damned COVID comes along, leaving no place open to run errands to. In all honesty, although I've never had a consequential accident, I worry every time I ride that, if something happened, I'd be terrified of receiving medical attention, given what's going on right now.

As I don't want a cup anemometer on the handle bars,

Hand-held units don't have cups, but they're still impractical; for example:

Hi, to any performance nut.

Has anyone mounted an Airspeed indicator on their scooter for true performance data. Would that even work in turbulent traffic air flow?

Feel free to critique/criticize.

I owned a sailboat for 35 years, and therefore have experience with wind speed indicators; in fact, I still have a hand-held model (that's the only kind I can imagine being able to install on a scooter). I would expect that the majority of hand-held units would be made for sailing, and therefore calibrated in "knots"; so, you'd have to do measurement conversions (to MPH or KPH, depending on location). By the way, one knot equals 1.151 MPH, or 1.852 KPH. Also, the range of wind speeds that are anticipated when sailing, are much lower than experienced on a scooter; for example, 50 MPH (over 80 KPH) is in excess of 43 knots. I doubt that a hand-held unit would be designed to measure accurately at speeds approaching that magnitude, since, in my opinion, most sailors wouldn't care about the details of such a blow, because they'd be too busy scrambling to find their life jackets. So, I would conclude that a practically-sized wind speed indicator would not prove useful on a scooter, but I'm quite willing to stand corrected.

When I was a kid, a few of my buddies bought Welbike scooters that were carried by some British paratroopers during WWII. You could buy them here in Canada in army surplus stores at that time. I never owned one, but rode my friends' on many occasions. Here's some pix:

Pardon sounding like a wise guy but that is what he wants to know! How to reset the oil service light.

That's precisely what I told him. What I didn't explain, was how to reset the odometers. I assume he knows that much about his bike.

If it's anything like the Yager, there are 3 odometers: one that can't be reset that measures the distance the bike has traveled in total, and two that can be reset. Of the two you can reset, one is for trips, and the other measures the "service interval"; with the Yager, when the service odometer reaches 1000, the service reminder light turns on. To turn it off, simply reset its odometer.

Here you go... Definitely not my cup of tea.

Different pic, but essentially the same.

I actually have a picture of a scoot with ape hangers, but (try as I may) I couldn't figure out how to attach it to a post. (I couldn't find it in the wiki)

General Discussion / Re: Really BIG idea! "Kit Bikes!"
« on: January 11, 2020, 04:48:02 PM »
I like the idea, but I don't know how much of a bike could start from a "kit", and become road "legal" from a licensing perspective. Rather than purchasing it as a kit, one could run around buying up parts that could somehow be made to work satisfactorily together, but I bet you'd have major trouble getting it licensed. I fear that any bike would have to arrive largely intact from a recognized manufacturer to become legal.

Technical | How To / Re: BB's in my Michelin??
« on: November 21, 2019, 02:27:13 PM »
I've never used BB's or DynaBeads, but have a few questions:

1) Do BB's come in different sizes (calibers), and if so, are there any sizes that won't fit through a valve stem?

2) How do you know how many (or the proper weight) to use in a particular tire?

3) Does anything happens if you get the number (weight) wrong (over or under)?

4) What are the reported problems (aside from the obvious: using BB's along with balancing goo)?

5) Is there any harm in using them preventatively (if you don't yet have a balance problem)?
