People 50 / 17mm Dellorto PHBG install on People 50
« on: May 22, 2018, 08:20:46 PM »
I bought a 2007 People a few years ago and have never been able to get it to start and run properly.  You can search my posts for more details.  I finally threw in the towel a couple of years ago. Didn't even try to work on it or ride it last year.

I decided to go after it again this summer and ordered a new carb and all the goodies to get it installed.

Since I'm sticking to 50cc, I decided to not go up to 19mm.  I have a Technigas Trek pipe on it. When it runs well, it revs up to 9200 rpm pretty easily.

Decided I'd document my install here.

I've ordered the AU262 two stroke atomizer for it and a range of main jets from 70 - 96.

I'd like to stick with the stock airbox with the snorkel cut out if there's an easy way to seal it to the Dellorto. Chime in if you know how to do that.

I'm not sure where to start with the main jet. I see 70cc kits with various air filters running from 83 to 94 jets. I'm in Denver at 5300 feet elevation, so I need to keep that in mind. But if 83 works for a 70cc, I'll probably start a couple of sized below that, maybe an 80.

I ordered a Trail Tech TTO CHT to check head temperatures. I'm sort of a geek as far as wanting more info.

Also ordered a choke cable so I can run a pull choke.

Carb will take a few weeks to get here. More to come.

Like the subject says, do I have to replace the throttle cable to get enough throw if I replace my stock carb with a 17mm Dellorto PHBG?

From reading other posts, it seems like maybe it's required for the 19mm or larger.

Anyone have experience with this?

I'm thinking about going with an Arreche carb to make the install easier, but it sounds like the PHBG will be easier to tune and get better gas mileage.

Technical | How To / Replacing auto enricher with manual one
« on: August 27, 2016, 01:51:27 AM »
I've had my Kymco People 50 2T for over a year now and I love the scooter but am totally frustrated by the electric enricher.

I can either get the carb tuned to start and run well cold or start and run well warm our hot, but not both. I've cleaned the carb, replaced the enricher, tested it, adjusted, adjusted, adjusted. Just can't get it right. Doesn't help that in Denver, we have 40 degree temperature swings in a day.

I've read a few posts and blogs where guys have made their own manual enricher and thought I'd give it a go. There are some  new available at scooter sites, but I couldn't tell if they'd work with the Kymco and they are pretty pricey, around $30.

I'll add lots of detail as I go. Bought a choke cable from Aliexpress. $4.20 delivered. That's the total cost of the project except for a little epoxy. https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32513446829.html?trace=wwwdetail2mobilesitedetail&productSubject=New-30-Bike-Push-Pull-Choke-Throttle-Cable-For-Yamaha-PW50-PW80-Y-Zinger-Kits&spm=2114.13010608.0.56.zRrD0S&#autostay

Technical | How To / Starter circuit Keihin 50
« on: August 23, 2016, 05:11:00 PM »
For testing the auto choke/bystarter, the manual says to try to blow through the circuit when it's cold. The hand drawn picture in the manual shows them blowing through a hole at middle top. From actual picture you can see there is no hole at the top. Any ideas?

Thought I'd post this as I'm now having the same problem with my scooter after putting on a performance exhaust that I was having prior and had just never quite solved.

Issue was that when I rode for more than about 15 minutes when the weather was hot the scooter would just die on me sometimes when I stopped at a light or even die sometimes when I cut throttle to go around a corner in an intersection. Then it won't start until the scooter cools off.  Manually choking the scooter by covering the snorkel doesn't help in this situation.

I figured it was running lean and getting too hot and just thought I'd tackle the issue after I installed a performance pipe and rejetted.  So I've done that. Rejetted and also put a new auto enricher on it. It starts okay when cold. Starts easily when warm but still will die sometimes idling at an intersection and then won't start again until it cools off.

Today I had started it up after it had sat for an hour and then drove it about 3 blocks. Weather was about 75 degrees.  Sitting at a very long light, probably idled for about 2 minutes, it died. Would not start at all. Waited 5 minutes. No start. Waited 5 more. Still nothing. Waited about 15 more minutes and it started after maybe 20 or so revolutions of the starter.

I'm pretty frustrated.  I used a propane torch the other day to see if their was a vacuum leak, but wasn't sure where all to place it.  I might take a spark plug wrench with me to see if I have spark. Maybe something in the cdi fails intermittently when it's hot.

You all have any ideas?  My wife has had it with me calling her and saying I may need a ride home.  I got her a Honda Metropolitan and that thing is so dependable.

Thinking of taking it too a shop, but wondering what they might do that I haven't done and worried how much they will charge to chase an intermittent problem.

Technical | How To / Wobbling rear wheel
« on: May 21, 2016, 10:45:01 PM »
I was revving up my People 50 a little on it's stand and noticed the rear wheel was really shaking the scooter around. I'm thinking either it's out of balance or the wheel is bent.

Do I take it to a tire shop or a scooter shop to have it fixed?

People 50 / People 50 carbs over the years
« on: April 06, 2016, 10:14:13 PM »
Came across a few threads that seem to indicate that older models had larger carbs and that starting in 05, 06, or 07, the carb is smaller and performance is smaller as well.

I have an '07 and previous owner already derestricted the exhaust (took off the extra air passage and welded up the little pipe). Performance is decent, but not as good as what all the owners of older models claim.

I've got a performance exhaust on the way, but I'm wondering if I should replace the carb too.  If I want to just replace it with an older model, what am I ordering.  The manual says I have a 14mm carb, but everyone says it should be 17mm.

Thoughts?

People 50 / Tecnigas Trek for People 2T
« on: March 17, 2016, 10:14:21 PM »
This review of Tecnigas pipes and the dyno curves made me very interested in the TREK.

http://www.pedparts.co.uk/blog/tecnigas-exhaust

RacingplanetUSA was the only place I found in the states that carried it and their price is $175 plus shipping.

http://www.racingplanetusa.com/exhaust-system-tecnigas-trek-kymco-horizontal-p-7184-1.html?backcPathco=1&cPath=2_18#.VusrDnIUWpo

Found it on ebay from Germany today for $110 US plus $33 shipping so pulled the trigger.  I also saw it from an Italian dealer that would have been about $165 total.

Anyway, I'm super excited to give it a workout and report back.  Looks like it has a pretty wide power band with peak power around 8500 RPM which should be really good.

I'm collecting stats now on my scooter (RPM, GPS speed, etc.) I'll report back once I have it installed.

I'm doing another arduino project and since I'm installing a Trail Tech CHT and Tach, I thought maybe I could do something more cool.

Check out this cool project.

More to come, but this was a test and I like it.  Using Plastidip so it can be reversed.

People 50 / Keep hitting kick stand in left hand corners
« on: August 10, 2015, 03:30:57 PM »
Does anyone make a low profile kickstand for the People?  I've hit the kick stand in left hand corners a few times now and the last time it kicked the scooter out to the right and I ran up onto the sidewalk.  Was glad there were no cars parked.  I'd just take it off but I need it to fit it into the small space I have for it in my garage.
