Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / My morning coffee spot
« on: September 24, 2017, 03:18:14 PM »
Living in the foothills, some mornings I take a 13 mile ride about 20 minutes to the mountains to enjoy my home brewed coffee.
Unlike a lot of the country we don't have cute little towns with gourmet coffee shops.
I have to settle for mountain views and general store coffee.

General Discussion / High beams... Who uses them during the DAY?
« on: January 12, 2016, 07:18:23 PM »
This subject has gotten a pretty lively debate elsewhere.  Personally, when I ride alone, I take the MSF recommendation of using my high beams during DAYLIGHT hours.  If I am leading a group high beams are on, if I am riding in the group or sweep low beams are on.  High beams never in traffic at night.

Here are a few examples of what I found, i have not gone through the motorcycle handbooks for all fifty states yet:

High beams used during the DAY recommendation FROM THE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FOUNDATION

WHERE WE ARE

A common complaint of street riders is that other motorists fail to observe them. Motorists who violate motorcyclists’ right-of-way frequently state, “I didn’t see him,” or “He came out of nowhere” (Hurt, 1981).
The problem of other motorists failing to observe motorcyclists apparently exists on several levels (see Motorist Awareness, page 31). An important Hurt Report finding was that conspicuous motorcycles and riders were less likely to have their right-of-way violated by other vehicles.

A variety of recognized tactics exists to make motorcycles and their riders more conspicuous: lighting, surface color and size, and rider traffic strategy.

Lighting factors include:

• Since 1979, most motorcycles sold in the United States have been equipped with automatic-on headlamps to meet some state requirements. This seems to have been an effective method of making them more conspicuous and reducing right-of-way violations. Currently, 86 percent of motorcycles on the road have their headlights on during daytime (Turner, 2000).

• Using the high beam of a motorcycle’s headlight during the day also helps to prevent violations of the motorcyclist’s right-of-way (Hurt, 1981).

5.11.2 - Headlight
The best way to help others see your motorcycle is to keep
the headlight on — at all times (although motorcycles sold
in the USA since 1978 automatically have the headlights on
when running). Studies show that, during the day, a
motorcycle with its light on is twice as likely to be noticed.
Use of the high beam during the day increases the likelihood
that oncoming drivers will see you. Use the low beam at
night and in cloudy weather.

What do for DAYLIGHT riding? Highs or lows?

Update
As of  12 - 19 - 2017 Ms Yue Traveled a Total: 67,094 miles Including riding up to Fairbanks Alaska. On her Vespa 250 GT.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Girl 27 does a 31,398 mile trip in just over a year riding a VESPA 250 GT, and she's not finished yet!
Riding alone, no advance crews or helpers.  Just herself, her Vespa 250gt and her sense of ADVENTURE.
This story is about a young lady I had the great pleasure to meet last October 2014 while I was riding in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas.  I had pulled into a picnic area to get a drink and have a sandwich.  I parked next to a well ridden blue Vespa 250GT.  I had finished my sandwich and was heading back from throwing away my trash, when the rider of that Vespa showed up.  We starting talking about our bikes, her Vespa and my Kymco 500.  I noticed her license plate was from Rhode Island.  I asked her if she had shipped her bike out here.  'Nope' she replied, I drove it the whole way from Rhode Island.
My expression must have been that of "Deer in headlights" because she reaffirmed she had rode the whole way.  I knew, I had to talk to her about her adventure.  At the next hiking trail we both pulled off for some pictures and I suggested we get something to drink down the road in Blue Diamond.  This is a little bit I found out about Ms Stephanie Yue . She's (28y.o.) freelance illustrator under contract for children's books and has been able to work while on the road.
Check out her website at www.jellycity.com

She started her adventure in the middle of May 2014.  During the months before, she started to sell everything she owned and the stuff she couldn't sell, she packed away at a friend's house.  She does her illustrations when she has longer layovers.
As of June 22, 2015 Stephanie has logged 31,398 miles on this trip so far on a Vespa 250GT  Total miles on her Vespa 42,623 !!  Mostly great riding and camping.  There were some hard miles in weather and wind traveling through northern great plains and Texas, where the high winds kept her speed to 50mph indicated despite having the throttle wide open.
Currently she has to travel from Madison Wisconsin north into upper peninsula of Michigan back into Wisconsin and across Lake Michigan on a ferry, continuing to Maine.
If anyone would like to follow the travels and adventures of this amazing woman,
she has a Blog
http://250superhero.blogspot.com/

Stephanie was truly inspiring to talk to.  After wintering in San Jose, CA for a few months Stephanie stopped in Las Vegas on her return trip for HIGH ROLLERS WEEKEND in March.
