General Discussion / Electric scooters.... WHEN?!
« on: January 17, 2015, 07:34:36 PM »
Hi all,

Recently I've been looking at electric scooters and so far none has been mass produced. Vectrix Scooters went bankrupt couple of years ago... Which is a shame. I know battery (lithium) is still the killer (expensive, relatively heavy, still provide relatively low range - all this compared to a tank with gas/petrol in it) but I can hardly wait till something like this hits the roads:

I know it's not a Kymco, so don't throw stones at me now :) It's not even plug in electric, but the fuel cell + battery combo is the real deal I think. Look at the site I linked in above to see more.

Also recently learnt that there are still VERY FEW hydrogen fuel stations available in the world. I was expecting higher number, since I first heard of Honda FCX and BMW 7H etc. But  s l o w l y  their number will grow and I'm sure we'll reach a point where it will be available.
Who know 5-10 years from now we'll need an electric category on this forum? :)

Downtown 300 / New tyre, but which one?!
« on: July 26, 2014, 03:02:03 PM »
I spent the last 4+ hours with reading. Mainly this forum about what tyres to buy for my ride, but I still can't feel the lightbulb above my head so to speak :)
I also did some preliminary research on what types of tyres I can get around here and for what price. Sunny UK.

Some thoughts on my current tyres:

The front tyre: I'm a bit worried about the state my front maxxis tyre (probably the factory original right?). Too many tiny-miny holes like cuts from erosion (road dirt) I guess and some cupping as well. And I would say the depth of the grooves is at it's limit. I'll add some photos later.

The rear: is a Viper Stryke (Avon?!) which is visually (for my layman eyes) in better condition than the front tyre. However on wet asphalt (understand heavy reain) I noticed loss of grip in cornering at speeds I would not consider too high. But maybe I'm wrong. I felt the rear wanting to get loose in round-abouts a few times. I also felt loosing grip at hard acceleration as well.

When I run onto thicker road paint sometimes the scoot becomes squirrely. No idea whether front or rear tyre causes this or perhaps the combination of the two tyres?!

Potential new tyres: (MAIN CITERIA: MUST HAVE GOOD GRIP in RAIN, and colder weather as well, snow not important)
I can buy the following around here:
The order in this list is random:
Heidenau K66 - I like these most but don't really know the reason... :)
Michelin City Grip
Michelin City Grip Winter
Michelin Power Pure SC
Metzeler Feelfree
Metzeler Feelfree Wintec
Pirelli Diablo
Dunlop Scootsmart - haven't got any RAIN info on these...

I would LOVE to know what others who regularly ride in rain are using on their DT300i?! And please comment on the tyres listed above.
Thank you in advance!

Downtown 300 / Treating rust...
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:55:43 AM »
Hello to everyone!
My name is Norbert. I'm new to this forum and I have recently bought a dt300i.
The bike is 3 years old and already showing rust on the underside of the frame, both stands and the exhaust. Nothing very serious yet, but about time to do something about it. I want to restore\conserve the bike as much as possible.

First I want to do the exhaust. I bought some Hammerite rust remover gel. Didn't go for the Loctite one since that leaves a film after (to prevent rusting again) and I can't know if that film would take the heat. The Hammerite doesn't leave a film. I plan to remove the majority of the rust with a brass wire brush. Then apply the hammerite gel. I'm not sure when washing off the gel should i use soapy water to neutralise the acid? Then dry it and paint it over with bbq paint. Got one which is good up to 650 degrees C.

Ant thoughts? Is my approach good?
Thank you all who reply!
N.
