Downtown 300 / Gear Oil. GL-5.
« on: April 19, 2019, 05:37:29 AM »
Hi All,

I am in the mist of buying my gear oil for the rear end.

In the owner's manual the recommended is a SAE 85W GL-3. Now those that tried looking for a GL-3 gear oil would know that it has been discontinued. Replaced by GL-4/GL-5 and recently a GL-6 has been introduced into the market. The rating was established by the folks that created the API standard.

I would happily go the GL-5 route as it is easily available. But it seems there are claims that the GL-4/5 will corrode the yellow metals in a gearbox. So my question is does scooter gear boxes have any yellow metals?

I tried looking into scooter specific gear oils but Shell, Castrol, Yamaha and they all are mineral with no info on their API service classification ratings.

And help would be great.

Thanks.

Downtown 300 / Breaking in a brand new engine.
« on: April 15, 2019, 02:16:48 AM »
Hi All,

Last week I took delivery of my brand new Yamaha X-Max 250.

According to the owner's manual, the recommended break in procedure is:

1) First 1000km, do not exceed 4500RPM
2) 1000km - 1600km, do not exceed 5400RPM

#1 makes no sense! at 4500RPM the max speed achievable is only 80km/h which is a crazy limit as I commute 90km return every day.
Also prolonged RPM at the same revs is to be avoided. So I am going up and down the speedo just to have variable RPMs.
Also I have limited the max rev to 6000RPM until I get to 1000km.

What's your take on the break in procedures?

Downtown 300 / Farewell friends.
« on: March 20, 2019, 05:28:10 AM »
Hi all,

I guess it's time to say farewell to the forum and all of you. It's been a good experience learning from the gurus as well as sharing all the stories about our ownership of this brand.

For me, 2019 has been a bad year. As of today, a total of three breakdowns where I had to get it towed to the workshop.

Today's was on her last legs. The con-rod bearing blew on the way to work, and the estimated repair bill came to 80% on the market value of the scooter.

It's been a bitter sweet ownership of 6 years, traveled 84,000kms in those years, multiple self-wrenching moments, small mods, experimental work, DIY maintenance work etc.

Again, thanks all. Definitely time for me to more onto a new and different platform, most probably the Yamaha X-Max 250.

Downtown 300 / Exhaust Cover.
« on: November 30, 2018, 08:06:03 AM »
That darn exhaust cover. The four points of mounting it to the exhaust are really a PITA.

Long ago the T-washers and rubber bits fell out, as a remedy, I've been using the same size bots with numerous washers to keep the darn thing on. Over time the holes are now much larger to the point that the washers now go over the top of the cover instead of in that recess.

What ways have you guys resolved this problem, providing you share the same 'problem' as me?

Thanks.

Downtown 300 / Sticky Sliders.
« on: October 15, 2018, 04:12:02 AM »
Hi All,

During my last CVT service, the mechanic replaced the sliders. Now, during the morning starts, the variator doesn't 'ramp' up till about after about 50m down the road.

Is this due to ill fitting sliders?

Thanks.

Downtown 300 / Replacement Clutch.
« on: August 28, 2018, 01:54:54 AM »
Hi All,

As I know it, the my Downtown 200 uses the same clutch as the 300.

My DT is now around 73,000kms on its factory fitted clutch and bell. I need to replace it in the next few months, the three pads on it is now quite thin.

So far I could only find a few options for replacement:

1) Original
2) Driven F1 (taiwan), apparently it is a HiT clutch
3) Ferodo
4) eBay item

Which leads to my questions:

1) Is there a min thickness the pads on the clutch should be?
2) How long should it last?
3) Should I change the clutch bell as well?

Thanks All.

Downtown 300 / Cold mornings.
« on: May 24, 2018, 01:33:40 AM »
Morning all,

Something I recently noticed but never took the effort to look or trouble shoot it.

I live in Malaysia, tropical country, where in the morning it may be 20deg C.  So not exactly cold mornings for most of you all.

Anyways, my DT200 starts up fine, it's when I ride off and before the oil temp indicator displays the normal operating temperature of double bars.

During that short interim time, the scooter would feel lethargic, inputs to the throttle would seem laggy. Today I tried a WOT just to see what would happen as I cruised along at 60km/h. It just choked and coughed.  The situation improves as she gets warmer and return to normal at normal operating temperatures.

I never noticed this before till probably about 6 months ago.

Mileage is now almost 68,000kms. It's a 2013 Downtown 200i.

And clues what's happening or is she just getting old?

Thanks in advance.

Downtown 300 / Broken 'down'town again.
« on: February 06, 2018, 11:11:21 AM »
So yeah. Here I am again stuck on the side of the road, lucky managed to reach a petrol station.

Riding home, the bike hesitated with the engine and battery light appearing for a split second, then she came back to life.

Stopped at the petrol station, shut her down and tried to restart. Cranking was weak and it wasn't able to start. No battery low light.

Waiting now for the tow truck.

FML.

Downtown 300 / Teasing 'Low Battery' light.
« on: November 20, 2017, 04:04:47 AM »
Hi guys, I am hoping you can help to shine some light on my problem.

This is about my low battery indicator 'teasing' me randomly.

A few months ago I changed my battery when it lost the ability to hold charge.

Fast forward to last week,  the low battery indicator came on first thing in the morning. I decided to shut her down on the road side, and restart her up just in case it might been an electrical glitch. It went away.

Today as I reached the end of my journey to work, the little red light came back on, again I switched her off and back on, again the little light went away.

Any idea what is going on here? Is it a tell tale sign that the rectifier/stator is going bad?

Seriously, that light should only come on when the voltage of the battery drops to a certain level, why would it pop in and out?

On the way home, noticed the battery icon lit up. Didn't think much of it as it was acting normal, nothing out of the ordinary.

I turned off my LED driving lights just in case.

30kms down the road, I noticed the speedo stopped registering as the needle dropped to zero. Soon after that, it started to jerk a little, a bit further the jerking became worse and acceleration too became jerky.

Abit further down the road, the display was fading and went blank, jerking was really bad with major hesitation in acceleration. Then the lights went out, tachometer stuck at 4000rpm and everything died.

Managed to find a park to park it overnight and hitched the rest of the way home (thanks to the samaritan that offered the lift).

So the battery definitely is dead. But since I was riding it, shouldn't it be enough to keep the bike running?

Unless my alternator too is fried? But it still doesn't explain why it would still die and relied on the battery to keep it going.

So guys, can you please help in a diagnostic?

Tomorrow, I will bring the mechanic to help sort out the bike. At worse, just hook up a good battery so I can get it to the workshop or is it as simple as a bad battery.

Thanks in advance.

Downtown 300 / Rebuildable forks and shocks?
« on: March 28, 2017, 01:14:15 AM »
Hi,

Are the forks and shocks on the DT rebuildable or serviceable?

At 47,000kms I definitely think they are extremely tired.

Downtown 300 / Front Brake Disc.
« on: December 08, 2016, 01:41:22 AM »
Hi guys,

Soon it will be due to replace my front brake disc.

After searching high and low, I discovered that demon tweeks is having a clearance sale on the EBC Vee-Rotor discs. Worth a look as I can vouch that it's really well priced now.

Here is the link:
http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorcycle/brake-discs/bike/kymco/2013/downtown-200i/ebc-brakes-vee-rotor-wave-disc-black-center-front

The description:
The Vee-Rotor from EBC Brakes is the latest addition to their ever growing brake rotor selection. This new eye-catching design has been developed in line with the on-going trend of riders customising/personalising their machine, rather than simply just replacing parts like for like. The ‘Vee-Rotor’ features an aggressively styled ‘wavy’design, with radical new machining techniques making for EBC’s lightest weight rotor profile. Their fully floating design features EBC’s unique and patented S-Drive button system, which use square sided rivets captured in square drive pockets on the rotor and hub allowing the outer rotor the ability to expand and contract freely under the heat of braking without suffering rivet lock – preventing distortion and vibration. EBC have also developed a range of solid rear discs, made from heat treated stainless steel with the same outer rotor design to fully compliment the front rotors.
Of course I have ordered mine.

Good Luck!

Downtown 300 / Changing grips.
« on: September 24, 2016, 03:41:29 AM »
Tried changing the grips today but the workshop guys told me it cannot be done as the throttle tube and its grip are moulded together.

Is the correct?

I purchased Spider Peak grips and would like them fitted.

Downtown 300 / Headlight halogen to LED conversion.
« on: September 23, 2016, 04:18:39 AM »
Hello,

I would like to convert my headlights from halogen to LED bulbs.

In the market now, they have those ones with the ballast built in with fans and heat sinks at the botton portion of the bulb.

I am not sure how it is behind the headlight housing. Is there a cover or rubber cover?  If there is, is there anyway to not have it or else the larger 'bum' of the LED's will not fit.

Thanks.

Downtown 300 / How long is the service life of rollers and sliders?
« on: September 18, 2016, 03:09:03 AM »
Hi,

Just wondering how long those things lasts, my DT 200 is about 36,000kms now.

Need to start looking online for either Dr Pulley or just go with originals?

Unless anyone have low mileage ones that they want to sell, I do not mind buying them off you.

Thanks.
