General Discussion / Old educational film
« on: October 11, 2018, 09:03:52 AM »
This motorcycle educational film is from 1959 and I found it fascinating to watch.  The way they dressed, the helmets and the voice over shows how much we have changed in 60 years.

General Discussion / My Piaggio is off the road.
« on: October 10, 2018, 08:16:31 PM »
My almost new expensive Piaggio Medly that I bought because I wanted a very modern reliable scooter has been off the road for 3 weeks now back at the dealership's mechanic shop and I might still not get her back for a couple of weeks yet.  It started to idle rough when started cold and would stall until it was fully warm so I booked it in thinking maybe it was a quick fix but after a couple of weeks of testing the electronics and those results were sent to Piaggio Australia and then were resent to the head company they stated that the fuel body assemble had to be replaced and a new one sent from overseas and that would take 2 - 3 weeks.  Luckily they had one or else I was told it could be 8 weeks if it was not available.  Very disappointed on how long it takes to get something that is my daily ride back on the road.  The dealership lent me a old worn out Honda Lead but after a couple of weeks I decided I needed something better and purchased a second hand Honda CB125E.  One reason I got it is that it is so basic that I can do all the servicing myself and the other main reason is that after riding the Medley which has a 16" front wheel and a 14" rear is that I wanted something with large rims.

It is fun to ride and very light and agile but I did notice that because at times I was thinking about correct gear changes my attention wasn't fully focused on the road and the surroundings as it was when I rode my scooter.

Do you have these in the States?

General Discussion / Ring break-in procedure.
« on: September 09, 2018, 09:53:39 AM »
Recently purchased a 50cc 2 stroke PGO Ligero (called a Metro in the States)  and it needed new rings which have just been fitted.  What procedure should I follow to run them in and for how long?

General Discussion / New Honda Forza 300
« on: August 30, 2018, 08:54:58 PM »
Saw this article yesterday and thought I would share it here.  Good looking scooter with some great features but the on road cost for Australia is almost 9 grand, that's a lot of money.  The Yamaha XMAX 300 is a thousand dollars cheaper.

A lot of info in this video on Stig's Piaggio.  Nice red paint as well.

General Discussion / My new Piaggio Medley
« on: June 24, 2018, 08:00:53 AM »
2018 Piaggio Medley.  Beautiful to ride and hopefully will continue to do so for a long time. If I remember correctly, Stig mentioned that the battery in his Piaggio was small and I was surprised when I saw the Medley's small battery.  It is hidden in a small section behind the back of the glovebox and I might see if there is a more powerful one available in its size, but apart from that all is good.

General Discussion / Counter steering

Although most of ride just scooters it is very important to learn and also cornering.  I prefer the old 'go in slow and come out faster'

General Discussion / Right angle tyre valve stems
« on: May 26, 2018, 06:38:45 AM »
When I purchased my Like (125) I wondered why there was a right angle valve stem on the front and a straight one on the rear which was hard to get at so when I had new tyres put on my new 200i and the fitter asked if I wanted a right angle valve stem fitted to the rear I agreed and it has made checking the pressure and pumping in air so much easier.  My really good air gauge would not fit the straight valve so I had to use a cheap one on the back and I had to struggle to get my foot pump hose connected but now it's all good and I managed to buy a good slightly used hand pump off ebay with a clip on hose that is quick and easy to use.
Why they don't fit right angle valve stems to both wheels at the factory is confusing.

LIKE 200i / Head light glare fix.
« on: May 21, 2018, 08:42:00 AM »
I have been doing a lot more riding in the dark lately and have noticed the headlight glare that has been mentioned before and although I liked Stig's idea of fixing it I thought I would try another method.  The area that causes the problem is the bevel in the headlight that runs around the edge as it reflects light straight to you (see photo 1) so I purchased some chrome pinstripe tape (9 mm wide) and used that to cover that area.  The only problem I had was that the pinstripe is not meant to be curved so I got some minor distortion at the bottom of the tape but it is barely noticeable.  Will test it out on the way to work tomorrow morning and see how it holds up after a few weeks.  Click on the attachments to enlarge.

General Discussion / The new Honda Monkey
« on: May 07, 2018, 08:58:19 AM »
Will be at the dealers in Australia in a couple of months.  Price is going to be around $6,000 AUD on road which I think is pretty steep so will be interesting to see how they sell.

General Discussion / Fitted a power cable for my GPS
« on: April 19, 2018, 10:35:25 AM »
What a pain in the rear end, removing panels and trying not to break clips just to get to the front so I could feed the power cable from the mirror to the battery.  Motorcycle mechanics must hate working on scooters.  At least now it is done and working well.

General Discussion / Spammers
« on: April 07, 2018, 06:58:35 AM »
On another forum that I am on as soon as someone starts spamming you hit the Report Moderator button and it comes up with a list of reasons.  If you click on SPAM then that automatically locks that person and blocks his post until a moderator deletes them.  Any chance of having that function on this site as well?  It might stop them from repeating spam post if they know their efforts are going to be wasted.
