General Discussion / Re: Why America is destined for failure...

Once upon a time there was this lawyer he came from a country that had a lot of problems and no obvious solution his country was oppressed by a foreign power in his case Briton in this case bankers.  His solution was pretty simple he sat down and began to spin his own cloth, he made his own salt.  the point is we need to quit using the bankers money and use our own, barter trade whatever?  the little lawyer was Gandhi.

Yep I thought so   the people diaphragm moves much more and in turn folds itself more often and so cracks...  just plan on replacing it every 12- 15000 miles it's simple and cheap enough just a pain.  Enjoy the ride I wish mine were still ride-able.    Damn Elk....

Riding is well maybe not better than sex but still great and it's more allowed in public.  seriously I can't imagine not riding I still want to get the Iron butt ride on the scooter done this year or early next.  Third time wasn't a charm but the ride is all worked out and ready to go I just need a couple of buds and we are off.  here is the map I put together

It looks longer than it is.

Last May I struck a raccoon and went down, I healed and this may 3rd. while on a long ride alone apparently I was struck by an Elk while riding on hwy 9 through Arkansas south of Mulberry.  This time the injury's were much worse.

An Arkansas state trooper arrived shortly after the incident and called for a lifeflight from southern Missouri they were taking me to Little rock, AR. but had to land at Heber Springs hospital since I was coding on them they resumed the flight a few hours later and arrived at Little Rock where the surgeon first thought I was dead since I hadn't had a heart beat in 15 minutes but decided to resuscitate me and did surgery to repair a torn Aorta and remove my spleen.  I had a total of 12 units of blood.

I also had a broken collar bone and scapula with some ribs and a wrist fracture but they didn't dare do any surgery until they knew I was stable....the bones healed as best they would... the next 11 days I was on a machine until I came too the surgeons were prepping me for a surgery to install a stomach tube and trachea.  since I was going to be brain dead and would need nursing care..   wrong how about more testing!

So the first memory I have after a great day of riding was some lady the surgeon telling me I was a miracle and my wife explaining to me where I was and why I must not pull the tubes out, shoots they had tubes in every orifice I had, and a couple of new ones chest tubes on the 13th. day I was released from ICU to general care and on the 16th. day sent home after a load of x rays and other tests including a competency test.

My wife was informed by a local sheriffs deputy that I have ridden with after the local police were informed by the trooper in Arkansas.  The accident happened around 2 in the afternoon and it was almost 8 pm when my wife found out.  She caught a ride down with a family friend and stayed until I left the Hospital.

The next several weeks were spent recuperating It was on July 1st. my birthday that I rode again not my scooter it was totaled finally with 47,000 miles on it so now I am riding my wifes old scooter her Kymco Grand Vista 250 it fits poorly but beats walking she has her new Honda Forza she bought a week before I went for my ride.

Ten weeks later I was back at work still can't bend from the waist and my knees are still healing from the fairing rash.  I still wear a wrist protector and spent a week riding the twistys in Arkansas a couple of weeks with the STO or scooting the Ozarks group.   We are heading back down in October for a weekend stay with a friend.

So would more gear have helped? No how much time did I have to react?  the brush was like 6 feet from the road and at 65 mile per hour and the Elk traveling 15-20 from the side I must have had .1 second to think OH sh**!.  The scooter was equipped with a dual 35/55 watt HID lamp set and highway pegs, the Engine had just been gone through top end rebuilt and the transmission was new the fall before with Dr. Pulley sliders.     I miss the old People 250 S   maybe I will find another to work on and ride again.

Till then everyone keep the shiny side up and never pass up an opportunity for happiness because life is too short..   Shalom

Roadcraft / Re: Gloves
« on: September 27, 2014, 02:54:33 AM »
This is one of those things that you need to try on before you buy, OK so once you find just the right ones try for a better price online.   I recently purchased a pair of Tourmaster Dri mesh gloves (waterproof) liner built in and they work the day after I bought them we rode for several hours in heavy rain and my hands stayed warm and dry.
I have had two accidents the first I was wearing some joe rocket atomic summer gloves and they worked well at 40 mph...  The second I was wearing fulmer without any knuckle protectors and this time I went down at 65 f***ing Elk ran into the road,  the left hand suffered some pretty good abrasions on the first two knuckles but they healed and a broken bone in the wrist which no glove would help.
It was hard to tell what condition the fulmer glove was in because the ambulance crew sliced it to get it off.. along with my favorite pair of Jeans and shirt....took two months before I could ride again too many broken bones and weird dizziness.
Here is hoping that my dues are paid and in case they aren't that the current pair will protect well.

I am on my third HJC in two years both of the others gave their lives for mine..  first looked OK but the inner foam was crushed, the second the chin bar was torn and the poor thing suffered a cut strap where the air ambulance jockeys cut it off of me.  They work period and a full face or flip face is way better than a half or even a 3/4 when you need it.

The SUV's really freak when you kick, slam their doors after they inadvertently try to run you down.  You only have to do this once and they start to pay close attention, kind of how you get a mule's attention.  The first time I did this a lady in a van looked me in the eye as she tried to change lanes on top of me but after I arm slammed her van door she hit the brakes and swerved into the other lane I am certain that she thought she had run over me.

Getting home in one piece may be the ultimate goal but why not have some fun on the way there.  Sometimes you teach and sometimes you learn.  Either way you have the right to your lane and sometimes you have to defend the right.  just be prepared for any reaction on the cage drivers part.

Kymco News / Re: Full face, 3/4 or 1/2 helmet?
« on: September 21, 2014, 11:17:46 AM »
Depends on how much of your head/ face you value.

I like a flip up full face helmet and I am on my third one in two years first I struck a large raccoon at night and went down with a broken shoulder scapula and ribs one of which punctured a lung, the Dr. told me I was the first live person he had seen with similar injuries and was I wearing a helmet?    The next helmet was used up nearly a year later while cruising thru Arkansas an Elk met me while I was traveling 65 during the afternoon.

I woke up 11 days later in little rock after having two life flights and two hospitals and dying twice with a mangled spleen and a torn aorta (the bitch broke my heart)! and broken collar bone broken scapula and ribs and wrist lots of road rash..  anyhow the helmet worked again and I am now wearing a new flip face.   They work!    And by the way armor jackets might help some but?

quick reply    I am sure that P.E.T.A. is looking for me..

Grandvista 250 / Re: Oil Change
« on: July 05, 2014, 05:07:57 AM »
The two oil plugs are 17mm. and the transmission lube plugs are 12mm.  I usually drain the majority of the oil with the left side plug then after tipping the scooter a bit to get just a bit more out I reinstall the left plug and then open the bottom plug and remove the screen to check or clean  after the drips finish I replace the screen spring and plug snugging and clean off any drips or surface gunk with a shot of Carb cleaner and a cloth.

Then over to the left side every 10,000 miles to change the transmission fluid 75-90 W Amsoil sever gear it works and I probably never need to change it at all, remove the bottom plug and drain into pan first place a rag across the bottom of the tire to prevent drips, when drained install bottom plug and remove top plug using a veterinary syringe available at stores such as Orscheln or any farm/ feed store you can pick up a 200-300 cc syringe I remove the plunger holding my finger over the needle port I fill it with fluid to the 250cc mark or 25ml. then carefully reinsert the plunger and burp the air out after rotating the syringe then inject the fluid into the hole repeat until the correct amount is in it's quick and clean and you won't waste product this way..  party on.     I usually use either Amsoil 10-40 motorcycle oil or Mobil 1 4T they are both excellent and sure they are expensive but so is an engine rebuild, I have 26,000 miles on the current GV with no oil burning great compression and silky smooth.

People 250 / Re: How is it supposed to feel at high speeds?
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:18:33 PM »
Probably time to involve a mechanic, I had my people downhill with the wind once and pegged the speedometer over 100 indicated it was smooth as silk, the only time there was any shaking was on a cupped tire at really slow parking lot turning speeds.   One of the great things about the People was it's smooth ride at speed it's resistance to induced shake or shudder from uneven pavement or passing tractor trailer's.   So please have the scooter checked out it should be smooth at any speed.   Jim.

People 250 / My last ride on my People 250S
« on: June 27, 2014, 07:17:27 AM »
My first ride on my People 250S was on July 8th. 2008 I bought the scooter in Wichita, KS.  and rode it 205 miles the last 105 in a solid downpour.  the next 5+ years we had a lot of adventures together met a lot of really good people on two wheels and spent many hours in silent contemplation of God's creation as we moved through it. 8)

That came to an end on May 5th. during a ride on Highway 9 in northern AR. according to the police report I struck a deer or elk.  that day and the next 12 were lost to me as I spent them in a med induced coma.

I came to in a hospital in Little Rock, AR.  the air ambulance ride there had to short stop in Heber Springs, AR. to top me up 4 units and restart the heart then to Little Rock for 8 more units and another 10 mins being legally dead I woke up only hours before I was scheduled for a surgery to install a stomach feeding tube and had a short conversation with the surgeon who called me a miracle since a massive transfusion and the extended lack of heartbeat is usually indicative of  a future (veggie) state.  family says the jury is still out on that one.   Add to that broken collar bone and Scapula lots of ribs and a broken wrist bone  writing hand of course.

I am so glad that I don't have any health insurance the bike insurance payed the 1000 medical rider to the ambulance co left me with a 33,000 ambulance bill and you should see the rest.  can anyone say chapter 7?

Since then I have been recovering first there and then home, it was only on Tuesday that I saw the pictures of the People which had been in a tow lot in Northern, AR.
It's pictures told the rest of the story, the sides weren't too bad but the front showed the normal 4" gap between the back of the front tire and the fairing were reduced to zero the frame had folded and I e-mailed the pics to my mechanic who looked them over and said (pass on it) so I signed over the title to insurance co and sent it off in mail.

Whoever ends up with it did OK? the engine was just overhauled this spring new piston, rings, Head, valves. etc.  the transmission had a new Dr. Pulley variator and rollers, new belt and new rear pulley assy or clutch.  new headlamps 35 and 55 HID sets with custom switch's. bikemaster trugel battery.

I thought I would ride thru the 50,000 mile mark this summer actually I was planning on doing that on it's 6th. birthday. I am so going to miss the old girl.

For my birthday I am planning on riding my wifes old Grand Vista time to get back on a horse even if it is a different one. I suppose it will be my new bike for a while.
I have to go back to work and collect a pay check at some point.         Sorry to go on like this but it's hard to let go.  :'(

Check your carb diaphragm open the access cover in the met in box and carefully remove the two screws holding the cap on top of the carb remove the cap and long return spring then carefully lift the diaphragm unit out look closely and see if there are any holes or tears evident the replacement is very simple and inside the canister there is what looks to be a plastic screw slightly depress this while turning 1/6 turn and it will unlock the cam releasing the diaphragm from the body be careful not to drop either the little spring or needle to put it together again with new diaphragm use small pair of needle nose to hold screw upright holding canister upside down by needle lower canister over the screw spring assy and when in place either turn slightly to start cam or carefully turn over and use screwdriver to set cam that's all install into carb body carefully setting top into rib and add cover.

See you can ride a People 250S all day long it actually took 24hours and 12 minutes of non stop riding except for a 30 min lunch stop and fuel stops.    Don't just look at your scooter ride it!
