General Discussion / DIY Cheap panniers for your scooter.
« on: July 31, 2011, 06:36:05 PM »
Thought I would share this cheap and useful mod for all scooters.

I was on the Agility section discussing storage or lack of it on a scooter. I found had a look online and found this page showing an easy, cheap and simple way to add panniers to your scooter.

http://scootercommunity.com.au/forums/p/5662/28850.aspx

Im on my way to the shop tomorrow to buy some. Just watch you keep it away from the exhaust.

Just got an email from a VW Beetle forum im on about a charity run being organised for around easter 2012. The plan is to raise a minimum of £50 each and ride from John o Groats at the tip of Scotland down to Lands End at the bottom of England. The only thing is it has to be on a 50cc bike or scooter, crazy but fun right?

There will be support vehicles etc on hand to help out and they are in the process of trying to organise transport for all the bikes to the start point and then back home from the end. I am seriously thinking of signing up, need to see if i can find a cheapo 50cc scooter 1st tho cos i dont really want to run my Agility 50 i case i wreck it with all the miles involved. I may end up on the Agility if it comes to it tho.

Sounds good, scooters, bikes, camping, and a great ride thro the UK.

If anyone else is interested heres the facebook links to the guy arranging it all,

I think i will try get my son to come on the back of my scooter if we go,should be a good laugh if nothing else, and hey, its even helping charity too.

Agility 50 / Sooty spark plug, am I running too rich?
« on: June 30, 2011, 09:01:47 PM »
If my spark plug has black soot on it does this mean I need more air into the carb?

Mine is pretty black on top, not oil, more like black soot. Just tried drilling some holes in my stock air box to see if that helped, drilled 6x 9mm holes in it but gave it real low revs and no power, struggled to go over 25mph. Covered up the holes with tape and tried again and was ok. I took tape off 1 hole at a time till I had 3 open and its still ok. Need to check plug again tomorrow, but in general if its sooty does it mean I am too rich? Only on an 82 main jet.

Technical | How To / Guide for your spark plug analysis.

I noticed a few guides been posted lately for checking your plug condition, very useful. Only prob was the good one was in German and i cant read German :-[

Anyway i had a look online earlier and found this one if anybody needs it? Its for a car but the pics and descriptions are pretty much the same, i think  :-\ so it might come in handy for someone. I saved it in my faves anyway for myself if i need it later.

Agility 50 / funny engine noise? help/advice please
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:37:50 PM »
Ok, i was riding home from work today  and noticed my engine sounded different than normal. At 1st i thought it sounded like i maybe had a bad seal on my exhaust where it joins the engine or i maybe had a small hole i it. It had that kind of noise and sounded louder if i put my head down towards the vent on the centre plastic under the front of the seat, down near where the exhaust joins the engine.

The scooter still feels fine and rides like it did before, but it cant be nothing, can it?

I got home and took off my seat to look closer, there seems to be a tapping kind of sound from maybe the top of the engine at the front, in where the rockers etc are i think? I didnt open the cover yet, was too late, need to maybe do it tomorrow.

Could it be i just need to adjust my valve gaps at the rockers? I have never did this before, had my scooter maybe 6 months, done about 4200km on it since i had it, all in its done 14000km. Im now worried i may damage it more going to work tomorrow?

It doesnt sound like a banging noise, more a tapping type sound, like i said i thought it was just a leak in my exhaust cos thats the closest sound like it i can describe it as.

Any ideas or advice would be great cos im not too sure yet on scooter engines yet.

Agility 50 / front wheel removal
« on: June 20, 2011, 09:49:41 PM »
Is it correct that in order to remove the front wheel on an Agility you need to pull out the spindle? From reading the manual thats how i read it ???

Going to paint my wheels at some point, not soon, and just wondered about removing them.

Agility 50 / Tyres
« on: June 15, 2011, 09:58:29 PM »
I want to upgrade my tyres for better grip, especially in the wet. I thought maybe I could get some fatter ones than stock, does this sound possible? Anyone done it already? Not sure if they would fit under stock mudguards?

Took a spill this morning going to work on a wet road, the front wheel just went away from me and I wasnt going particularly fast, maybe 20-25mph on a bend and slowing. Always felt bad in the rain with my stock tyres, fine in the dry, does 50mph round bends then but in the rain its far too dodgy. Must be better rain or allround performance tyre out there? Guess my stock tyres were designed for 31mph not 51mph so must be due an upgrade.

Fractured bone in my hand and done my knee in by the way, smashed mirror, cracked footpanel at rear footrest, couple of small scratches on front speedo panel, not very fun 1st thing in the morning. Still riding to work tomorrow, if you fall off your horse you have to get right back on again. Anyway any tyre info would be good, thanks.

General Discussion / WARNING, BE CAREFULL OUT THERE GUYS!!!!!!
« on: June 13, 2011, 04:51:42 PM »
Just got home from work, still shaking and numb. Was getting my helmet and gloves on at work to ride home, biker guy from work was doing the same, dont know him personally but he gave me a nod as I pulled away. 2 mins later he flew past me up the white line, I was doing 20-30 and he passed me as if I was going backwards. He was easy doing 50-60mph and still accelerating when a parked car pulled out and he hit it side on, classic t-bone.

I saw it unfold right in front of me like slow motion, car pulled out, bike slammed on brakes, skidded and smoke everywhere from his back wheel, then WHAM! Car looked as if it was hit by a truck, whole side caved in, biker somersaulted over the car when he hit it, looked in a bad way.

Needless to say it shook me up, rode home at 30mph, no cutting thro traffic or taking my usual moves to beat the jams. I can still see him nodding at me in the bike park before we left work, very scarey stuff.

Just wanted to share it to get everyones sensible head on when riding. Its a dangerous place out there so everyone just ride safely and dont take too many risks or chances, its not worth it. Im off to sit down, have a smoke and contemplate how lucky ive been so far considering how I sometimes ride. Im sure we all do it for the buzz but just make sure next time you have a blast down the road that its safe to do so.Trust me you dont want an accident like this on a scooter.

Agility 50 / clutch springs
« on: June 11, 2011, 08:29:59 PM »
I finally got my torque spring set today from Taipai Scooter Assassins after waiting 2wks. Plan to fit a 1000rpm torque tomorrow but I dont have any uprated fly springs yet. Can I still fit the 1000rpm torque spring with stock fly springs or do I need to upgrade them too at the same time?

From my understanding the fly springs only increase take off speed so if im not too bothered about that right now and just leave the stock ones in will I still be good to ride with the 1000rpm torque fitted?

Agility 50 / how often do you change your engine and gear oils?
« on: June 04, 2011, 08:03:07 PM »
I change my engine and gear oil every 1000-1500km and always use fully synthetic oil in the engine, just wondered what everyone else was doing?

Agility 50 / what is small tube under airbox?
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:13:24 AM »
Does anyone know what the 7-8" clear rubber tube that clips under the stock airbox is for? Does not go into airbox but comes out under it and looks like an overflow or drain tube for something? Has a plastic right angle bend at one end and the other has a bung/stopper in it. The bung/stopper end clips under air box, the right anle bend joins a tube going behind airbox.

Anyway my own is yellowed and dirty so I just cut a new piece of tube and fitted that. While I was doing it I noticed what looked like some old gearbox oil in the old tube, but it smelt of petrol?

Guess it is some kind of overflow, just wonder if anyone can confirm what is meant to overflow into it?

Agility 50 / running scoot with no crankcase cover.
« on: May 31, 2011, 06:15:45 PM »
I want to check how my belt and cvt system runs, can I run my a50 on the stand with no cover on?

Didnt see how I could start it up without the kickstart or start button since the cover would be off? Thought I could start it up normally on the stand then take the cover off while I leave the engine idling, does this sound ok to do?

Dont want to ride it anywhere without the cover just want to run up the throttle on the stand to check the belt is not slipping and all is as it should be inside.

Agility 50 / air filter/better airflow.
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:58:56 PM »
Was looking at getting a k&n type air filter and bigger jet to improve performance on my scoot. (till I had to fork out for a new clutch on sunday).  Just wondered tho, has anyone tried cutting louvered  vents into the stock air box instead of fitting a cone filter? Would this work or am I going down the wrong road here.

Just thought the main reason for the cone was to let more air in, so if I had louvered intake vents on my stock box it would draw in more air also as I ride and save me changing it?

I already did all the usual derestrct mods, boss, cdi, 5.5 rollers, race variator. On a good day I get 75-77km/h average on flat, up to 80, and 82km/h downhill, 30-40mph uphill(unless VERY steep).

Agility 50 / Belt dressing warning.
« on: May 31, 2011, 08:02:43 AM »
Just a quick warning to anyone who has thought of spraying belt dressing on their belt, DONT DO IT. I did because I was told by an engineer at work it would help my belt run better and prevent any slippage. Soon learned after test running that our scooter belts need to slip to travel up and down the cvt properly.
I sprayed mine on Sunday and whhen I went to work on Monday morn my scooter was running like crap. Spent most of last night stripping down my variator, clutch and belt, cleaning it all, then reassembling it. Is a lot better now but think the clutch still may have a little spray on it as its not 100% right. Im waiting for a new clutch and 1000rpm contra spring arriving this week anyway, cos mine is worn, so will try put up with scoot till then. Revs seem to go very high and stays in low gear longer than I think it did before I did the whole spray thing  :(
So whatever you do, DO NOT PUT BELT DRESSING SPRAY ON YOUR SCOOTER BELT.
