People 150 / Continues starting even with key out (See video)

Hi all!

This problem reared it's head for the 2nd time.   But now I have a video because I was able to capture it in the act.   And for some reason, this time, there's a metallic rattle sound happening too but that's probably a separate issue.  See the video here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJZnat_HFOg&feature=youtu.be

I took off the solenoid and inspected it.   It's new and so is the starter.   I didn't see anything with the solenoid that looked like it had welded itself together.   Nothing looks awry.

Well, a couple months later I took off the solenoid and inspected it.   It's new and so is the starter.   I didn't see anything with the solenoid that looked like it had welded itself together.   Nothing looked awry.   So I charged up the battery and put it back in.  She started without issues multiple times yesterday.   Oh well, we'll see if she keeps up the good behavior.

I was inspecting my solenoid and battery a couple months ago and hadn't gotten back to putting it back together until today.   I have completely forgotten where this red wire goes to.  It's too short to go to the positive terminal of the battery.  My guess is it goes onto the positive terminal of the solenoid.   Is that correct?

I know there's a starter solenoid, but is there also a starter relay?  And if so, where is it located?

People 150 / Continues starting without me holding the start switch

I went to start my 2007 Kymco People 150 scooter (silver) today.  It started up and ran as I rolled out of the gate, but it kept on starting and starting as if I was holding down the start switch.  I tried what I could to make it stop:  Hit the kill switch, hit the starter switch a few times, pumped the brakes a few times, turned the ignition off, took the key out.    It kept starting and starting and you could hear it get weaker, draining the battery.   It eventually quit or ran out of juice.   All of this took about 25 seconds.

I ran an errand and returned in 20 minutes.  I took out the battery in case it was draining the battery.  The battery was warm and the voltage reading is now at 4 volts.

Not sure if this pertains: but often when I depress the starter switch, it doesn't immediately start, it does a 1/3 second delay like it wants to start but doesn't but then decides "yes, let's do start now".    I never considered it a problem because it would always start.

Any thoughts?

In my case, the contacts on the start switch needed cleaning.

Disassemble the starter switch housing (two screws).  Then there are two smaller screws holding in the electric switch.   Carefully take the switch apart as there are loose parts in there.   There are a couple solid metal knobs in there that need cleaning.  I sanded them lightly with some fine sand paper.   Also, the top and bottom of the spring needed cleaning as well (since the spring is part of the circuit too).    Motor started up no problem after I did this.

I was having problems starting the motor and in fact nothing was happening when I depressed the start switch.  The battery was good.  I could also jump the solenoid and start the motor.   With some testing with my brother, using a multimeter, we found that the start switch was the culprit.

I made another post called something like "Solenoid only getting 3v" that forced me to find this solution that I'm posting here today.

What voltage is expected to the solenoid from the ignition start switch?  3v or 12v?   I'm currently getting 3v when I try to start the scooter.   (The battery is measuring 12.5v.)

My scooter isn't starting.    My solenoid is about 1 yr old.   (I replaced it 1 year ago.) .  I can jump the solenoid (by connecting to the two nuts/bolts atop the solenoid with wire) and the motor will start.   

We disconnected the starter switch from the solenoid and gave 12v to the solenoid leads from a separate 12v battery and it started the motor.

SOLVED

I replaced the solenoid and the scooter has been starting like a champ!

(Btw – I inspected the contacts of the old one and they all looked very good.)

UPDATE:  I just jumped the solenoid and it started up nicely.

What's my next step?  Replace the solenoid?  Or...

2007 Kymco People 150.

UPDATE:  The condition has degraded as now it won't start at all... and sometimes I won't hear the clicking noise either.
When it was starting the wheel wasn't spinning hardly at all if any when on the center stand.  It would not start while on the side stand (or while sitting on it).

No work has been done to the CVT but I'm about to do some work to it once my variator holding tool comes in.

Today I'm going to dig into the wires and do some testing.  I don't know as much about it so that's why I haven't dove into that part yet.  I'll let you know what I find.

I replaced the starter and that did NOT fix the problem.  I figured even if it wasn't the starter, the starter will probably fail at some point so might as well replace it.

Now I'll try checking the voltage and the wires and various other tests as the gentlemen suggested above.

I'm looking for a very smooth acceleration from 0mp to 20mph.  I have no issues riding at a low speed and accelerating quickly to high speed.

From a stop, when I begin accelerating from 0mph, it kinda does a hard shift into gear.  I'm not sure if there is shifting going on or how the mechanics actually work, nor do I know the correct tehcnical terms.  But it's rough at the beginning accelaration from 0 - 5 mph.  Somewhere around there.  It's always from the beginning of acceleration when it has rough transmission.     So my semi-workaround to make it less of a rough shift or gear engagement is to rev it up and down a few times to tease it or seduce it into shifting into gear.    When it catches, it's like it jerks a little bit.  So as take off from all my stops, I nurse the throttle up and down to get it to kinda get in gear smoother.

Any ideas?

More information as I've been riding it more since the first post.   It seems to start when on the center stand (with no friction against the rear tire) as opposed to starting not on the center stand.  It's like it likes to start if the rear tire is free spinning.

Does that sound like wiring or starter issues?
