Title: Wierd electrical problem
Post by: jeeves on June 27, 2017, 03:17:04 PM
Last week my regulator/rectifier burned out and the main fuse burned out.
Today I received the r/r I ordered from eBay. It looks nearly the same as the original, all the right color wires in the right pins in the connector.

Put the battery back in , but as soon as I connect the r/r the scoot lights up without the key in the ignition! I tried to start it, it turns over but doesn't run.

I disconnected the r/r and then the scoot runs normal!

So is the r/r I bought a piece of crap, or do I have a bigger problem?

One thing comes to mind. The color of the wires going out of the r/r are in a different order then on the original. This doesn't necessarily mean it's wired wrong or does it?

If its not an original Kymco part, chances are its no good.

No, not original Kymco part, but the my model and production year are on his list of compatible scoots.

Contacted seller, he responded and said he will try to see if maybe the wires are connected  in a different order, but I somewhat doubt it, it's probably going back to him. Looks like OEM is the only way to go with Kymco.

In my experience,  OEM is the best and cheapest way to go Jeeves.

You are right Karl. In the long run cheap aftermarket parts cost far more than OEM in time and money.

Seller contacted me today. Apparently it's a faulty run of r/r's from the manufacturer.
I'm sending it back, free postage and full refund.

Honest seller.
There were some language difficulties since I bought it on German ebay, but Google translate helped.

Ordered OEM.

Generic r/r was 44$ with shipping, OEM is gonna be 80$ without shipping.

OEM Kymco parts are waaaay too expensive.

I can't deny that OEM is expensive Jeeves. Unfortunately its the very best option. When you get it let us know how the OEM part works out for ya.

It's probably worth the extra money to know you will get a reliable part.
If that exists...

OEM r/r arrived today. Works ok.

The location of the r/r is probably the main reason that this is the second one I had to replace.
It is located underneath the floorboard with no venting whatsoever, and turned facing backwards!
Really stupid engineering to put a component that has passive cooling in such a place.
Have been thinking to extend the wires and try to place it somewhere above the headlight, but really need the scoot, and don't have time for that now.

The  r/r connector can be seen dangling under the floorboard.
