Title: Please help - Larger Windscreen?
Post by: Nireen999 on July 04, 2016, 10:58:26 PM
I just ordered the GIVI windscreen today.  I have around 1700 km's on my bike now and I would say about 70% of these KM's were very uncomfortable riding due to winds that were only between 15 and 20 km an hour.  I was getting alot of my head being thrown around and when side winds came at me well it caused me to put my hazard lights on!  Very uncomfortable ride.  Is it possible that my top box is part of the problem?   Tell me will this new shield help?  Will I lose much speed? :) Thanks, Kathryn.

When I added the Givi I noticed a huge advantage. There is a lot less of the head being tossed around with the Givi. Plus the design takes a lot of the wind off the hands too. I also have a top box on and there are only certain times with a cross breeze that I get slightly tossed but totally controllable. You are going to love it. And don't worry about speed. I have no issues getting it up to 80mph+ on the freeways with my 220 lbs on it and there is still plenty of extra power left to over take if I needed too.

I agree, I have the Givi windscreen on my DT300. I love it!! Much taller than the stock screen and it protects the hands a bit as well. Your speed will not be affected, I've had it up to 80-85mph and still had a little throttle left. You are going to like the Givi

AWE thank you both!  That makes me very happy to know.  My goodness I am only 100 pounds and if that wind blows any harder I may leave the dang bike behind! LOL It really is bad to the point of having to have my hazard lights on. Geeez I should have my new shield tomorrow! I am heading for a 6 hours trip to see my mom and dad on Sunday.  I don't mind losing some speed as long as I am not being blown around.  I took my top box of yesterday to see if this helps any.  Thanks :)

I did the Givi Windscreen.  It did a great job but what I did not like was the no air area.  The Givi deflected the wind higher so there was no air movement around my helmet.  Which caused a problem for me.  There was no fresh air going thru my helmet.  So I switched back to the Kymco windscreen

Were you using a full face helmet?

I wear a modular helmet.  I travel all over the Fort Worth-Dallas  area.

I don't think I got the GIVI after all but have this one you see attached.  The second one in by KAPPA company. I think I love the screen so far.  Today I shall get on the highway and see what I have here.

I think that isw it, though maybe a repackage. D294ST is the proper model number too.

Other than the Kappa logo it looks to be the same. Thanks for the pic, it seems to be a bit higher than I want and I may have to cut it down a bit. I would be fine about 2" higher than stock but I understand it is 6" higher. I want to keep the top of the plexiglass slight below eye sight.

I could tell , just by looking at it, that's a little shorter than the Givi . My Givi windscreen, is at least 6" taller than the stock screen. I'm not positive, but I want to say it's 7.5" taller . I'm not sure if the new windscreen will help, if your getting blown around. Especially from cross winds. I hope it helps you, though. Ride safe!!!

Well I am looking through it.  It is about 6 or 7 inches taller than the original one I had. I hope it works for me too!

Good to hear it suits you well. I ordered mine but with the knowledge that thee Dremmel Tool and cutting wheels may be getting some work. That is fine as I love he handle bar coverage but I knew it was too tall.

Glad it's working out for you Nireen...

I have had the Givi on my DT for around a month and put about 1000 miles on the bike with it. I am about 5'10" ish and the windshield is still a bit short in my opinion. I look barely over it most of the time and sometimes through it. That is annoying, I wish it was taller or shorter. I said it is still too short because I still get some buffeting of wind around my helmet, but it is much much better than stock.

I did lose a 2-3 Mph I would say, but not enough to care. I like the windshield overall.

On my People 300 with the Puig I don't even need to wear a helmet if I don't want...all buffeting around head is gone. But that's a horse of another color.

No I am in PEI Canada and it tends to be windier here than most places.  This year is worse than it usually is.

i also either look over or through it and I have gotten used to it so it doesn't bother me one way or another. I just like the wind protection it gives me.

Ive had the Givi wind shield for 4 years, and love it ,  I raised the seat 4 inches and mover the butt stop back 4 or 5 inches ,and my head is above the windshield ,  I cut the dome in the seat off flat, to make room for my butt, the foam I used is 10 Lb. rebond foam 4 inch thick1 inch slant back where I sit,
wish I knew how to send pictures ,  too old

Would love to see that friend!  Good on you for making it work.  I am OK to look through it except for when it rains!! Not so good.  I have much more comfort and control of the bike now I find.  Yes I lost a wee bit of speed but nothing to bother me at all. Can only go so fast on the highway anyway without getting a ticket :)

My suggestion for when it rains is to use Rain-X.

DO NOT use rainX it can make the plastic haze. It is designed for glass not plastic. What you want instead is Raincoat. It is designed for plastic and works great. I use it on both my Givi and on my visor.

mnpugdog is right. Check with manufacturer to see if Rain-X is OK. I like the windshield, particularly the extra hand protection. You will really appreciate that when the weather turns cooler.

Use the Rain-X for plastic, I also use the Rain-X cleaner too. Yes it is true the original over time can cause hazing. As a side note also treat the headlight covers as they can then spread off the moisture as well.

Edit; I rode a bit tonight and what a difference. I did not have to put on a jacket just because the sun went down. Also riding for a bit I realized the hand guard area could be used as a dash panel extension and maybe a GPS and/or Cell mounts could be added. Definitely what should have been on these bikes all along.

I have noticed two more things.

1.) MPG is down a bit. On the first tank it went to 68.1 where I was getting 71 or better. Now to be fair it could be as it seems I am zipping around a bit faster. With the lowered wind turbulence I find I am usually going 5 MPH faster in most area's as speed is harder to judge.

2.) morning dew sucks. Not having that 100% over the screen view is disturbing at the dew makes it hard to see. haven't had the opportunity to try it in the rain as of yet.

I rode mine in the rain for the first time the other day.

If you're used to getting drenched on a normal motorbike, the Downtown is amazing - just make sure your knees and feet are tucked in behind the plastic. As long as your moving, you stay pretty dry. When you come to a stop you get wet, but that's to be expected.

Mine has a Givi screen fitted and whilst I find it quite noisy (I'm 5'10), earplugs on linger journeys tend to sort that out. In the rain though, the screen is the perfect height for clearing my visor.

Speaking of noise we all should be wearing hearing protection while riding. I have seen a couple places that the noise in the helmet, no matter what brand, gets to be 90+ dbs at 30 mph and goes up from there. OSHA rules at work say anything above 90 requires hearing protection for anything over 30 minutes of exposure. I always wear hearing protection.

I find it quieter but there is a whistle. I do think just an inch or so has to come off the top, it may just work to flatten out the top profile a bit. In the rain even with the Givi at full height a full face helmet seems to be a must have.

I got stuck in a little rain. I must say the beading of the Rain-X plastic makes life better.

I just did 112 miles and on the fill up got 74.5 MPG. I hope tendency keeps up. It would be nice not to have efficiency affected.

Well for me it was perfect, a little shelter for the hands and perfect height. Im 196cm tall and i look over the screen and can see the road 3m in front of me, so no use for dremmel 💥👍
