Title: Valve Lash mystery continues
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on August 16, 2013, 11:23:02 PM
Have you ever read the stickers which are placed on your LIKE?
They are either buried or tiny - or both.

The sticker on the wall of the seat bucket says to adjust our valve lash to .06 mm +/- .02 mm (ie: .04 mm > .08 mm)

.06 mm = .00236" (I don't have one of those blades)
.07 mm = .0025" (nope)
.08 mm = .0031" (I have a .003 , I can do this one!)

One on-line manual says to set them to .10 mm (= .0039 "
Most of us have been doing that, setting them to .004 inches (= .1016 mm)
A lot of people say to use .004" for a Gy6 engine.

The sticker on my scoot says I should be adjusting my valve lash  to, between .00157" > .0031" which is a bit tighter than my customary .004.
Ah, me.

I discovered this misinformation when I did the valves on Dear Wifies Like. I reasoned since the Owner's Manual was missing some info I considered vital and what it did have had severe translation errors and just plain wrong info that .004" (.1 mm) was what all the other models are using that .004" is what I set. All seems to be well. I even volunteered to Kymco USA to help edit the Owner's and Service Manuals but they just ignored me.

Thanks Karl....
I have heard .oo3's and .oo4's - so I figured I wasn't far off.
My goodness, some of this info is pretty important.....
As Vivo said - these Kymco's are pretty much bullet proof and made for use in many rugged environs - but still, we're not doing valve adjustments with a matchbook cover and rocks - You gotta give us decently accurate info!

I'm going for 0.004" myself. I do wonder which is right though.

It's better to be loose than thighs, right? Tight means valves could burn up?

Loose is better than tight. Tight will burn first the exhaust valve then maybe intake. Loose thighs is a whole 'nother matter! Nyuk, nyuk!
