What is a GY6 engine?
Who made the first one....you know, like what is it's provenance?
Is the LIKE 163CC a GY6?
Seems like darn near every engine maker west of the Mississippi makes a GY6, why? What's the deal?
But GY6's are not all the same. ??
Thanks.

I believe it's based on a Honda motor. I wonder if my 1983ish Honda XL250 is in this lineage. It had a screen for an oil filter, and had a reputation of being a bulletproof engine too.

The GY6 was a Honda engine... very simple... very reliable... It was sooo good that everybody copied it... Honda discontinued the GY6 for a better design....
Now, there are lots of variants of the GY6... as long as the basic design is there, they call it a GY6.... All GY6 look the same but differ in some parts like displacement, bolts, gaskets, bearings, etc. There's also this Honda Cub engine that everybody copied, but that's another story...
The Honda GY6...

Oh my Goodness, I think I'm in L O V E !!Makes a lovely pin-up over my desk at work.
Vivo - what the HECK would we do without you!? Thanks for taking the time to share the info and the great photos with us novice scooterlings!
(I'm guessing that the black rubber plug in the center of my belt cover is a block off for a kick-start lever that some of these engines have?)
