Title: How high
Post by: modmaster on June 15, 2013, 04:03:55 AM
This is a question for anyone. How high do you fill up the gas tank? I have been filling mine up just until the pump auto shutoff kicks on. How can I be sure if I'm filling it up exactly the same amount each time so I get an accurate repeat for checking gas mileage?  So far on my first 3 fillups I've gotten 79, 80, and 82 mpg which I am extremely happy with.

When I fill up, it's usually around an inch from the topmost part of the tank... I only checked for gas mileage once... just out of curiousity... I'm happy because I spend less than in using my car...

After the first couple of gas-spilling fill ups, I decided to just fill fairly slowly until the pump auto shutoff.  I never try to top off.  Also I try to fill at the same station each time, I believe I'm getting consistent enough fillups to base my gas mileage calculations.  Like modmaster I'm getting pleasantly high mileage readings with almost 4,000 miles on the scoot.  The last 3 fillups have been all between 80 and 90 mpg (USA.)  That's really really good mileage for a scoot that can do so many things!

Here's how I do it.

I put the bike on the main stand and turn the handlebars all the way to the right. I fill fairly quickly for the first gallon and a half, but then slow down. I hold the rubber boot of the fill nozzle away from the filler neck, so I can see when the filler neck is starting to fill up. When I have it filled to within a few inches of the top of the neck, I stop filling and rock the bike very slowly back then forward. This usually burps out a pretty significant bubble of air that gets trapped at the top of the tank proper, thereby lowering the level in the filler neck and allowing me to put in a bit more gas. I then fill it up very, very slowly to within an inch of the top of the filler neck.
