I notched mine to get a little more top speed, gained around 5 MPH...

It works ok but you realy need to make sure the ramps are good and smooth.I also have seen people drop a spot of liquid weld on the bottom so the rollers sits up higher for faster take off.

My ramps were smooth alright.. I had it milled in a machine shop

Also shave like 2mm off your drive boss and you will be doing real good.

I left the ramps alone and just took 1 mm off the outer wall and relieved the inner wall too.
(the yellow circled area). Then when I installed 16g sliders it would rev to 9000! I just added
1.5g to those sliders to try again...

With the outer walls completely gone I'd worry about the rollers turning sideways and jamming
up in there.

Wear the yellow is were I put some liquid weld so the rollers sit up higher that way they rolle up faster for faster take off. works good.

Wordslinger did one a while ago im sure and it seemed to work well till the variator broke where he had ground it down  :o
Suppose it all depends how much you take out.

when you shaved the variator, did you look at how high the belt came on the variator,. would there be any chance of the belt coming off,   and what is the RPM. at 60 mph. thanks for any info,.

taking 2mm. off of the drive boss ,. where does the benifits show,  low rpm or high rpm,.  thanks for any help to understand this

Top speed...

The belt was just about 2mm out the variator and I don't think it can come off, unless the belt can stretch...

What rpm at 60mph?.... sorry don't have a tach...

FYI... we do this just to experiment.... Stock is still safest...  ;)

did you take 1 mm. off the drive face and 1mm. off  the sliding face for the close shave,.  I measured the space between faces and it is 25 mm.  and I measured the belt it is 24 mm.  wide,  they are not up to spec.,the belts I have are 24 mm. each,  thats why I have higher RPM. than cortez,  spec. for belt is 1004 /  25.2 /  X 30 degree slope,.

I like the downtown variator it has lots of meat on it,. to play with,.  I shaved 1/2 mm.  off of the two sides,. so my pulley is 24 mm. wide now,.  same as the belt ,.  I think I should take off an other mm.  I might get then same results you got ,.   took the variator to a machine shop and they did a half job,. I did the rest with my dremel,.  extended the ramp to the edge of the variator,. sure took a lot of sanding to smooth it out after,.  I took it for a ride after and at 6,000 rpm I was crusing at 70 mph., that was a first for this scoot,.  the only thing is,, it does not work under lower speeds,    has any one tryed over size rollers  I was thinking to get 23mm. 18 mm. 24 gram sliders and cut them down to 23/ 12   16 gram then adjust to suit after,.  what would be best for cutting   laser ,.  water jet,.  ????  any ideas welcome   de dee

For the low end you can "Hog out" oops I mean carefully machine the area pointed to by the arrow;

what would hogging out do ,when the rollers are in you are in nutral so no effect for hogging out,

Well I'm not so sure about that. Below a certain RPM the clutch disengages but on my
scoot the belt is still carried off the drive boss. I modified mine then added the DR Pulley
sliders and my scoot would rev to 9000 RPM's at take off as the ratio was allowed to go
lower so I'm assuming it allowed the pulley face to open more....

I was not thinking of take off speed,.  I now see your idea,. I would love to see your scoot in action,  you are a pocket rocket ,.  what tool did you use to hog out the ramp,.

I used a dremel, not a very smooth job but it works fine. I started modifying it because
I could only do 60 MPH and it's supposed to do 70. I didn't notice much change with the
stock rollers on the low range but she's running great now!

I just checked the width of belt and it will run on the boss , I will take a run after supper to see what it will do,.  I shaved another mm off of the variator,  and a 1/2 mm off of the face variator,  I did a dry run on the stand and the belt came just over the top of the pully, that should lower the RPM at 65 mph.        after supper test time?????

My mods to get the pulley faces closer together didn't work as I need a shorter boss to do it.
Need some help from a machine shop for that one...

from stop rpm. at wot.  is  6,500,.  up to 80 mph. it builds to 7,500 rpm.  at 90 mph.  8,000 rpm. that is on a two way run,. that is with a givi windsheild,  and I weigh 211 lb.  my seat has been raised 2 inches so I look over the sheild,. and I slide back 3 inches,.  the raise on the seat is with me on it,. it took 4 inches of foam to give me the lift,.  feet still flat on the ground and knees flexed,.                                       I bought a power file 1/2 inch wide it sure cleaned the ramps in a hurry,  it is the right size for 20 mm. ramps on the downtown,  I find I will have to smooth the ramps for good results, all I have is 60 grit belts,  grits available by the manual from 40 grit to150 grit,.    de dee 2011 300i downtown,

I took 1.2mm off my drive boss length last year, gained me 4-5mph on my 50cc, slight loss in take off speed tho.

our machinist here do not like one unit to work on ,  and would like a engineers drawing to work from,. so it would not cost more than one thousand $ for the job,.  ( the joy of being in a Gov. town,.  )   where did the small shops go

This may sound stupid but I thought that the dr pulley sliders were designed to do what your trying to do with a lot less effort. In saying that I do like to play around with the engineering side to save a bit of money its the self satisfaction that you get that better than a plug n play thing

Sliders are not sold in our country... not even any Dr. Pulley brand... if they do sell here, the'll be very expensive.... next step... be creative and... improvise...   ;)
