Zombie, I am not sure it's inexpensive. With Chinese competition (let's for the moment skip the quality discussion) Kymco is ranked among more expensive scooters, just below Italian ones.

The spare parts are available but not that readily as spare parts for Italian scooters, at least not in Europe.

Furthermore, the spare parts are much more expensive than spare parts for Italian scooters. Let's say, double, on the average. However, they really do last double or more than Italian - for example, on Piaggio 50 cc scooters you have to replace disk pads every 4000 kms at most under normal conditions while on Kymcos they last 20.000 kms or even more and you replace them not because of wear but because they become rock solid. :)

Furthermore, to be honest, the quality of build story in regard to Kymco is quite exaggerated. I've had problems with my Cobra 50 2T (called TopBoy in USA). On Agility 125 in the first 18 months I've had faulty engine start switch, the exhaust cap fell off and now there is electricity problem waiting to be resolved. So far, People 250 S has 4000 kms and no problems. Yet, I would not say that overall Kymco quality is much higher than quality of other non-Chinese scooters (eventhough Kymco and Piaggio and a lot of other scooters are actually produced in China, I am referring to no-name Chinese scooters that have flooded the market recently).

Look just what happened to JPrestonian's People recently... not exactly good advertisement for Kymco...

Kymco is OK, but it is not exactly great. Just my 2c.

Kymco parts  are  almost 50% less than Vespa/Piaggio parts here in  the  USA.. You  can  thank  your import tariffs for  making kymco  parts  more expensive..I  owned a BV500 and had to  take  Piaggio  to  court and  WON!!!!! because of  continuous break  down  and lack of  parts..Go  to  Modern  Vespa and  listen  to the ProSac  crowd  complain...

Build  quailty  on  the  the Italian  stuff  is  horrible in  comparision.. Body  fasters, panel  hinges, wiring  harness  and  connections let alone the inferior  Magnetti  Marrelli electrical  and  fuel  components.. Parts  distribution  is  shall  we  say  almost  non existent  in  the  USA  for  any  Piaggio  product..Guzzi, Aprilia included

.i dunno zombie...but the closest place I can locate Kymco parts is 60 miles away...however, there's always the internets...

Yeah Word, I live in N.W. Florida, where you cannot get a key made w/out driving 3-4 hrs. By available parts I did mean the Net. If I was running Chinese scoots I think I would have to buy them in 6 packs. I looked for 5 months before buying my '01 super fever, $300.00 running. I will post pics, as I have just finished a candy apple burgundy paint job w/ speed racer type stripes.

I can agree with you. The thing is that I live 60 kms from Italian border so it is quite easy and inexpensive to get anything for Italian scooters.

I own them because they give more bang for the back compared to Italian scooters at the moment. However, it is still possible if you search enough to find pre-owned Italian scooters with very few kms on it 30-40 % below list price. It pretty much depends on what you want.

One more thing, in lower displacements Italian scooters cannot even compare to Kymco if we speak about performance. My gf has stock Piaggio NRG mc2 bought in summer 2003, 50 cc 2 stroke that does almost 60 mph. You can *almost* compare it with Agility 125 with twice the power. Of course, Agility has more power climbing up the hills and around top speed, but the point remains. This is why Italian scooters, especially 50 cc are more popular around here.

Btw. whoever needs spare parts, I suggest Stadium Yamaha. They are so consumer-friendly it is incredible, I have just exchanged several emails with their director of Internet sales. Big thumbs up!

There are very few Kymco spare parts on www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com)

You should look up ebay.de and ebay.co.uk.

..why do you ride a Kymco?...
I'm not a determined Kymco customer.
My first Kymco was just a try, a relative big scooter for little money. After this good experience I upgraded to another Kymco.

But in my family we also have scooters from Yamaha and Suzuki. And to be honest, I think they are superior to Kymcos, but more expensive too.
Same applies to Honda, where I wouldn't refuse an interesting deal.
And of course BMW, but actually they don't produce scooters. Their C1 is extraordinary solid (and expensive).
Title: Re: ..Are you a ride warrior?...
Post by: axy on July 16, 2009, 02:40:56 PM
C1 is also heavy, slow and not exactly a "scooter", more like a mini car. :)
Furthermore, I think it is not in production anymore.

I agree Ebay is NOT a good source for kymco, but if you shop different o.e.m. dealers for price you will find as much as 20% diff. on the part. Also by researching you can use DIO or GY6 parts, and there are loads of performance parts for these. 60 on an Italian scoot? is that kph, or mph? my zx runs 65-68 mph, verified. But I try not to beat it all the time. It's my primary ride

60 mph, 50 cc, 2 stroke. NRG mc3 from 2003, old model, stock, 5.5 hp.
http://bikes.88000.org/wallpapers/99/Piaggio_NRG_MC3_DD_Super_Scooter.jpg (http://bikes.88000.org/wallpapers/99/Piaggio_NRG_MC3_DD_Super_Scooter.jpg)

In the past I owned NRG extreme 50 LC from 1999 that I had tweaked (new carb, ZX Leo Vince exhaust, 72 cc kit), it did 120 km/h. Of course, subtract at least 10 %, but still respectable - it could measure up with lots of heavier 125-200 cc scooters.

Also the way 50 cc Italian scooters corner is unmatched by anything produced by Kymco - on the contrary, Kymco's People 250 S has way better handling, cornering and braking than Piaggio Beverly 200 or 250!

So, this talk about this scooter or that scooter brand is pretty much a question of personal preference, geographic location and what you really need. For people in USA customer support for European scooters is bad, for people in Europe, spare parts and support for Italian scooters is much better than for Kymco or other products from Far East. Usually you will not get best sports performance from Kymco scooters in economy class. Kymco makes great economy scooters (less than 200 cc) but when they try to make 400, 500 or 700 cc scooters, they become just as expensive and not quite as good as their Japanese or European counterparts.

Personally, I think that Kymco is not on the good track. Chinese competition has started gaining reputation and it is closing in. Take a look at Keeway that has several great models (Outlook 125/150) for example, good dealership and it is 25 % cheaper than Kymco.

I still think that both for Kymco and a lot of European and Japanese premium brands the profit margins are quite high and they are earning on hype, and I am telling that as owner of two Kymcos.

I can't argue against anything you have stated. All in good sense. There is one point I try to make about All Chinese motor vehicles, SHELF LIFE. I never heard of Keway, but there are lots of things  I have not heard of YET! I can't afford too many luxuries, so $100.-200. every few months is fair to me.

I haven't heard of any of the mainland Chinese bikes being considered "as good," quality-wise as any of the Taiwanese bikes. Supposedly some are getting there, but one that I hear mentioned a lot has a good local dealer (open about 14 mos., so far), and he admits he's replaced entire engines under warranty... something the SYM/Kymco/Genuine dealer has not had to do on any of his bikes, in three years.

In fact, MY bike has had the most extensive warranty repair for them, thusfar (and yeah, it was a doozy!)... but to be fair, my dealer didn't sell it to me. I bought it used from a guy in Florida.

I don't agree in every aspect.

My 2007 Xciting 500 (carburetor without ABS) had a list price (from importer MSA/Germany) of 4895 euro. Much cheaper than any competitor, Burgman and Majesty 400 were already above 6000 euro. Only the Atlantic 500 was below 6000.
Unfortunately Kymco threw many successors of the old Xciting on the market and the price raised above 6000 (competitors still more expensive).
Scooters with the same price (below 5000 euro) had at most 250cc and less touring qualities.

And if you speak about 700 cc scooters, you obviously already have experience with the MyRoad. How many km/miles and years?
BTW, MyRoads list price is 7995 euro, still much cheaper than Burgman 650 or ...

I think that we do not know exactly what all Kymco repair shops are doing at a given moment, do we?

Btw. Honda is considered to be a top-quality producer of bikes, yet, a friend of mine had engine replaced on his brand new CBR1000RR after several hundred kilometers and within a week of rolling out from the shop. It is just a matter of statistics when one of the bikes will roll out from production line as faulty.

You can hear such stories in car world too, I have some horror stories that involve quite expensive cars like Mercedes from AMG gamma or BMW M3/M5, all within warranty.

But, to get back to the topic, watch the Chinese competition. I named one model - Keeway Outlook 125/150. Take a look at the price and quality tag. They are getting better and better.

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5266/pc100522qx0.jpg (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5266/pc100522qx0.jpg)
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8611/pc050522ns1.jpg (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8611/pc050522ns1.jpg)

This scoot is around 2800 US$ on the road.

Two weeks ago I bought liquid cooled Chinese quad Bashan BS200. For 2800 US$ on the road I got 200 cc, 15 hp engine with gas preloaded shocks, 4 gears and reverse. I think Kymco`s pricing for quads is quite shameful and exaggerated - 50 cc automatic quad costs here 4000+ US$, while 200-250 cc with CVT would cost around 7000 US$. I think we can agree that money does not fall off the tree, especially not today.

Anyhow, time will tell. Both Piaggio and Kymco are now effectively ***CHINESE*** scooters, being produced in China and not Taiwan or Italz. I think that the day is not so far when "Chinese" will not be a synonym for low quality. Two days ago I bought Gekko full-sized integral helmet for 35 US$ with tax included. You will say - it is low quality and it will break, it will not protect you in the crash. To the contrary, it has all CE certificates, it is made of policarbonate and my gf has been using the same for a year, not a single sign of wear on it. The brand is Gekko - 10 years ago I paid around 200 US$ for much worse helmet from Nolan than this one.

Times are changing and I am not sure that big names like Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki or Kymco are exactly on the right path. Where I live, their sales have dropped significantly while low-quality-el-cheapo-noname Chinese scooter sales have skyrocketed. Yet, few years ago everybody was making fun of people who purchased Baotians 50 cc 4T that could tag along at max speed of 25 mph on flat surface...

No; of course -- my mention was only one anecdotal data point.  :)

I really can't judge the quality of of a scooter from photos, though -- the Chinese have always produced good-looking scooters. When I visited the shop here that carries the supposedly high-quality Chinese brand (which I won't mention), they looked awesome. Then, I sat on one, and put my hands on the controls. All of the switches looked and felt like very cheap imitations of what one would find on a Honda, a Kymco, a Yamaha. The fit of the plastic body panels was not very good -- there were visible gaps. Even compared to the three Chinese Kymco bikes (Agility models and Super 8), these bikes were not up-to-snuff on close inspection.

Still, I think you're right -- the day is coming when the Chinese will be much more competitive, but so far, most of the importers in the U.S. are not paying for the quality to compete on anything other than price... and every day on the local craigslist, I see two dozen nearly-new Chinese scooters for sale for every 10+ year old Japanese scooter. They're always low mileage (I don't see any Quangji, Roketa, CFMoto, Flyscooters or Bashan bikes on this list (http://www.scootertrap.com/) (bottom of page)), and the ads typically mention that they either won't start or won't run (usually easily fixed, so someone who likes working on such things can always get an even BETTER price!). And since one manufacturer in China will often build scores or hundreds of "brands" in varying levels of quality, none of the Chinese manufacturers are even attempting to build brand awareness... which dilutes the whole idea of knowable quality.

When the Chinese have bikes that can truly compete with Kymco, they'll be a priced a lot closer to Kymco, believe me.

Wise man has spoken. Your last three sentences are especially important/intriguing.

I am asking a question - is it the quality control that costs so much or brand-hype (awareness, as you said) and "user support" down the road?

I think that Adly and Keeway are doing a good job in that area so far and we will be hearing more about them.
Also, Zongshen (in small displacement bike world) made a great leap forward. A friend of mine had their 200 cc cross motorcycle that was literally a copy of my ex. Yamaha TW125 (there was also version TW200 in USA). The quality of build was very good except tires that had to be replaced immediately.

Take a look at Zongshen GS250.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zongshen_GS_200-250 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zongshen_GS_200-250)

It costs around the same as Kymco People 200S.

All these things make you wonder what exactly are we paying for and what is the real fair price of the product. For example, Beverly 300 Cruiser goes for around 7000 US$, the same as People 300i S. Are they all going crazy with these prices? The same Kymco is close to 20 % more expensive for 1 hp and 50 cc more?!? The same with Beverly 250 vs. Beverly 300.

It's not just cheaper labor, but also inferior materials in many cases. Almost all of the Chinese bike forums will advise buyers to immediately replace all the fuel lines, as an example.

But also warranties add to the cost. If there are more Chinese manufacturers than you can count on one hand that offer and honor a parts/labor warranty, I would be amazed. I know of several that will send you a new part once you send back the bad one, within the warranty period, but I know of none that include labor as part of their warranty coverage (that's probably changed since last I checked, but again... who are they?).

I bought a Kymco because they advertise in national motorcycle magazines so they're serious about being in the American market; My People S200 was last year's leftover for $2,999 out the door with tax and tags; the two year warranty; the dealer is only six miles away and carries BMW, Kawasaki and Suzukis so he's not going anywhere like some of these cheap Chinese scoot dealers that disapear after a year or two ,so I'll be able to get service, and what I could read about Kymco on the internet was favorable.

The comment about replacing the fuel lines reminds me of a Daewoo Lanos my wife had. The breather hose from the rocker cover to the inlet manifold was such poor quality that when I pinched it between my thumb and finger I actually pulled a section of the hose out. Why do I ride a Kymco? it is a fun scoot and seems to be well built.

I began riding a Kymco because of a deal I couldn't refuse. My wife has an Aprilia Scarabeo 200 scooter that the dealer decided is a lemon. So to get out of the service contract we had on the Aprilia they sold me the Kymco 500R at cost.
Now I ride a Kymco because I absolutely love it. By the way my wife still uses the Aprilia to commute to work everyday and she hasn't had another problem with it.
I guess the dealer jumped the gun. Worked out great for me.

In 2004, I went shopping for a (transportation) scooter. I was going to buy a Twist & Go for $1000. I asked and talked to the owner and to the mechanic at the Motor Sports dealership in San Diego. After about 2 hours of bothering them, the owner told me that the Kymco was engineered much better than anything He had for sale. He also told me that his shop could take care of any problem that might arise. So I rode off on a People 50 for $2500 and a free helmet. They (Kymco and owner) have lived up to his given word.

With your permission I am getting off the thread, but I need some information. Now they (Motor Sports) are selling the new Stella ($4500 out the door.) I think that Genuine is the company that now produces them.
It is a 150cc (4 stroke) and the smog issue has been solved for California standards. Does anyone know anything about the company and/or the scooter?

The Stella 2-stroke was produced by LML, India, and was a pretty good scooter for what it was. Not sure if LML is building the new 4-stroke or not, but it's nearly identical to the 2-stroke, cosmetically, but is an inch or so longer in wheelbase. The 4-stroke hasn't landed on my dealer's floor, yet, but should shortly.

2005 Kymco People 50 2T 2200 miles, does 45-50 mph (according to speedo), bought for $1000 at a garage sale. I liked the looks of the larger rims. needs paint and CVT kit, we'll see from there. I use it as my commuter, Wife takes our only car to work and hauling the kids around until we can afford a larger vehicle.
I'm to poor for a tuner car or a muscle car, this scoot is my new hobby!

I looked at a couple of Chinese scooters,  sold under the brand of a Zoot 125 & a Zinmoto 125 here in Australia. The Zoot was a Baotian & I can't remember about the Zinmoto. After reading a lot of reviews & talking to a few people I was concerned about the quality of them. They both sold for $2500 AUD. I looked around a few other dealers at dearer scooters & was considering a Kymco Super 8 125 $4000, a Yamaha Beewee 100 2 stroke $3800, Yamaha Cygnus 125 $5200, Sym VS 125 which from memory was also over $5000.

I was buying a scooter to commute to work & didn't really want to spend that much. Even $4000 seemed a lot after looking at the prices on the Chinese scoots but I guess you only get what you pay for. My final choices based on price came down to the Super 8 & the Beewee. I had a Yamaha RD400 many years ago & I traded it on a Honda CB400 Super Sport after only a month as I just didn't like the feel of the 2 stroke engine. For only $200 more than the Beewee I could get a four stroke so I settled on the Super 8 plus I really liked the style of it. I have just clocked up it's 900th kilometre this weekend & all has been good so far with no problems of any sort. I really love this scooter & think it's great to ride.

I initially looked at Japanese scooters but was put off by the prices. I thought the GV250 was a pretty good deal. So far the only complaint I have is the body panels are a pain to take off.

As for the Genuine scooter:I recently bought a Yamaha FJR 1300. The dealer also carries Genuine scooters so I looked them over while waiting for the almighty paperwork. I wasn't impressed with the fit and finish(especially the finish) or even the quality of some of the materials. Other than that I know little about them but from what I've seen I'd be wary. Good luck! :)

Bought mine because:
1. Seemed to be the most scooter for the money.
2. My favorite dealer whom I trust became a Kymco dealer. (Station Park Honda in Louisville)
3. I liked the looks of the X500
4. By reputation Kymco seemed to be good quality and long lasting

I have not been disappointed.

Tony M... You have one hell of  a scoot! For the money, it cant' be beat. I found just looking at the Kymco there are NO cheap parts. Meaning they use all the good stuff. Nothing over the top mind you but all quality materials, and NO POT METAL. I will buy another... when I need to.

I would disagree. The plastic bits are quite cracky and thin and difficult to remove without damaging them, non-painted black plastic surfaces tend to be destroyed and "bleached" by sunlight after just one year (many other scoots' plastic parts are not affected by UV rays). Kymco's screws usually go directly into plastic, while other manufacturers use metal bits and nuts. Heat insulation pads around engine and under the seat are barely glued with few spots of glue. Exhaust pipes are made of plain iron/steel and tend to rust immediately while most Chinese little scoots have stainless steel pipe cans. I could go on and on. After one year I already have rusty discs, and I am not talking about rust that shows on friction parts after rain etc, also, a lot of bolts and nuts on the scoot are rusty.

However, most important parts are made of relatively good quality, even though there are exceptions to that rule (remember I had leaky engine casing that had to be replaced at 7000 kms, when also the speedo cable snapped etc. etc.)

I think that "great quality of build" is a myth perpetrated by people that did not have many scoots, do not drive scoot 365 days/year, keep scoots in the garage and not outside etc. However, it certainly helps Kymco to sell.

You are correct on all those points Axy, Great quality is not a term I would use, but for the money you are getting a scoot that will outlast any of the China crate scoots. It seems to me the scoot you are referring to w/ all the oxidation problems is something of an anomaly, meaning it was most likely made w/ lesser quality parts than most of the other kymcos. I saw the earlier posts referring to the same issues, and I think that model/year were built at an inferior plant. Mine is 9 years old, and was outside all it's life untill I got it 2+ years ago. There was/is no rust, or oxidized metal anywhere on it. I did have to paint it as the Florida sun did a number on the factory plastic, but all in all I will buy another Kymco before spending twice the money, and twice the replacement parts cost on any other brand. For ME this is just a cheap/fun way to get around a tiny little town. Even w/ all the modifications I have done I haven't spent more than  200.00 on maintenance in the past 30,000 km. If I bought a vespa I would expect to hand it down to my grandkids, and if anything broke I would be at the factory every day till they made it right, but I love my little BIC LIGHTER of a scoot.

I think it was just the plant his was made at. Some are better than others.

There is no rust on Agility either, except standard exhaust can and completely rusty rear shock spring.
People - a different story. You do not notice it at first glance but when you start looking, all tiny metal bits are rusty (nuts, bolts...).
