...can anybody explain to me how they work?... and if there is a benefit to changing out the original springs?...

The only benefit is to tune for aftermarket upgrades, like exhaust. The stiffer the spring, the higher rpm the motor turns before the clutch engages. You can tune the clutch to engage at the optimum powerband.

..i have an aftermarket variator...a Malossi Multivar...running three 9 gram rollers.....I think that I need a little quicker accelleration, with a little less rev of my engine...so, I need to find out what my original clutch springs are rated...and get me some a bit lighter than that....makes sense...

I don't quite understand the 3 rollers. Why? Does that in essence accomplish the same thing as using lighter rollers? Definately seems like they would wear funny! On my zx50 I swapped out the original 8 or 8.5g ones for some of the Dr. Pulley sliders that were 9g's. It accelerated a lot smooter, but was sluggish. Now I just put on a 70cc big bore, with exhaust and 19mm carb. The exhaust came with 6.5g rollers, and stiffer springs (green). It hauls ass now!

Hey Word, You can get spring sets w/ heavy, med., and lite. The 5.5 rollers will give you more rev's and more time to top out, the liter clutch springs will give you a quicker lock up on the clutch. tunning these parts is a pain in the @##. I found setting the clutch first will make it eaiser to tell what the rollers are really doing. I read alot of posts on combos, and found too many varriables to use any combo out of the box. I did wind up w/ the heaviest malossi springs from the kit to get my rpm's into the technigas pipes power band. It took a little while to get used to 3000 rpm starts, but i get to 45 mph in 3-4 secs,58 4-5. On flat ground I will hit my rev. limit of 13,500 between 65-68 mph. Not too shabby for an "01 super fever. The only drawback in my setup is my Kenda rear tire. It's a 130x60-12. There is about 1/4" clearance when cold, but at top end the tire grows till it just starts to rub behind the engine. I'm looking for a stronger rear tire.

..shaka, in weight theory, yeah..however, i found that 3 rollers wear prematurely...total roller weight is not relative to variator performance...

Hey Shaka, The heavy rollers will fly out sooner to close the variator, increaseing the gear ratio. Think about spinning a pencil on a string. you have to spin real hard to raise a 1 0z. weight. now spin a spoon on the same set up/ less spinning effort needed. In this example the 1 oz. weight is the varriator spring, your rollers are the penc., and the spoon.

So your motor has to spin the lighter rollers at a higher rpm to reach top gear, right?

correct. that's why your pipe came w/ lighter rollers. the pipe will make more power at mid through high rpm's. if you match that w/ heavy clutch springs you get almost constant power band useage. a little unwieldly for taking the cat to the vet, but not too many other scoots, cars, or full blown motorcycles can keep up over 100 yards. just keep using top shelf fluids.

Good, that confirms my understanding of the transmission. I still don't quite understand what advantage there is to changing the main spring does though. Seems like it would just make it harder for the belt to drop to the bottom? Making the scoot accerlerate slower? Mine is stock, I just replaced the small springs. Definately moves now though! Almost need some velcro grips! :)

the main spring determins the recovery rate on the variator. Sort of like downshifting, when you let off the throttle you want to be in the power band when you re-apply. a stronger spring will drop your gear quicker.
