...to owning a scooter ;D. I am set to pick up my New (3 miles on odo)2012 Super 8 150 3 days. I am PUMPED UP! What are the most important "don't forget to's...." with a new scoot, new owner, newbie with ZERO maintainence knowledge, in his first few months of ownership?
P.S. Thanks for all the enthusiasm I've found in KymcoForum posts...and awesome pimped-up scooter photos too!

Hi Scott, Welcome to the forum. Lots of good advice and experience here. The best advice for a newbie is DON'T CRANK IT UP FOR A WHILE! The break-in period is prime importance. It is hard to soft-peddle at first but it will pay off with a good running scoot which will give many happy miles. If this is your first ride remember to ride safe. It is so much fun that sometime you forget that the cagers are out to get you. Okay enough hard knocks...Enjoy! Len :)

OK break in has been covered so I'll go with, don't forget to kick up the stand before you ride off. Take it slow until you learn the bike, head to a big parking lot after hours and do some figure 8's and various speeds so you learn the bike even more. Observe your gas gauge/milage so you don't run out, they often don't read correctly. I always refill my scoot after 80 miles and usually add just over 1 gal.
Also stay away from oil spot in the lot and on the road. Enjoy the new ride, have a blast and stay in touch. By the way where do you live?

And yes, find yourself a large parking lot and practice your stops and starts.
and your turns. You will find it helps a great deal!

May as well add that once you mount your scit you become a super hero of sorts, we all become invisible to other drivers, but unfortunitly we still feel pain. So be careful!

Great little city for scooten, lots of hills, bring the scoot on a ferry and explore one of the out islands or head up to the San Juans and make a weekend trip! Just watch when you get those showers you get the road becomes slippery quick!

Great Scott! Welcome!!!
1. Watch out for slippery roads... sand, gravel, oil, banana peels, plastic bags....etc.
2. Check your tire pressure regularly.
3. Watch out for other vehicles.... always assume that you are invisible and other drivers cannot see you...
4. Always wear your helmet and other proper gear.
5. Ride on a comfortable speed... don't be in a hurry...
6. Always make sure you don't leave your keys on the scoot... (this happens lots of times) ;D ;D ;D
7. Don't forget to eat proper food and get good sleep... sometimes we forget these due to over excitement with our new toy....

The motorcycle Safety Foundation offers safety training for motorcycles and scooters (separate courses).
They furnish the vehicle, so you don't damage your new ride!
You just need time, $ and your safety gear.
You didn't indicate where you live, so you will have to dig a bit to find the info for your location.

If your mom hasn't told you yet, make sure you have clean underwear on before riding,
Don't spit when wearing a full-face helmet,
Never assume cagers (drivers of automobile) see you,
Practice using the front brake,
Check your oil level before each ride, and

@Carol: It was actually a '79 Ford LTD and she was probably 106 yrs old...I survived ;)

Remember if carrying a passenger or if riding in the wet or on damp roads that braking distance will double, so allow more space to brake from the car in front. And slow down more on bends too if wet out.
Wear all the gear,especially at the start till you get used to riding and get a feel for how your scoot handles.

There's 2 ways to show a picture. One is via attachment with the 192k limit.
The other is through a hosting site like Photobucket. Go to Photobucket.com
and open an account, upload pictures to there. Under the thumbnail is a link to
direct link. Point at that and it will say copied then come here to the post reply
window and choose the little picture on the line of icons above the faces it will
paste a "img /img" with square brackets, paste your direct ink in between those
brackets. When you hit send it will substitute the picture for the URL...

Scooter fun is great. My suggestion to you is find a local scooter club where you can connect with others who enjoy scooters as much as you do. I have made so many great new friendships and have learned many ways of riding in a group. You can google this, or checkout meetup.com for scooter groups on there. You will be happy you did this. It is okay to go riding by yourself, but riding in a group is so much better. Another thing I would suggest for you is to attend at least one scooter rally in your lifetime. Words do not describe the experience of these rallies. Kymco is a major sponsor of the next rally I am attending. Here is the link to this upcoming rally. Thanks KK. Searched clubs in the Seattle Metro. Uneventful. I found 3 with little-to-no activity in 8 months! :( Maybe I should start a new thread?

Maybe. I know for the Vegas scooter rally, we get many people with their old school Vespas and Lambrettas who come down to the annual Vegas Scooter Rally. We even get those from the Portland, metro area who visit. I am sure you will find some. Keep searching. I am sure the weather plays a huge factor as well for doing rides. I would check the Vespa and Lambretta clubs. Maybe they could refer to a few groups.
