Mine does. I am wondering if my belt could be slipping??? If so , can you tighten it?? It almost squalls a litte, especially under load lilke going up incline from a stop or if I really try to do a fast take off.
It kinda sounds like a fan belt does when it is slipping. any one else have this, and what should I do??
Or is it normal. It seems to do fine after that few seconds of noise.
-
Mine does it too. I took the cvt covers off, and pulled the outer clutch cover off and checked the shoes. I then put it back together,(after blowing out the dust), and cleaned the rear sprocket (clutch) with rubbing alchohol, and it went away..... for a while. What it is, is some residue from the belt sticking on the back pulley assembly near the outer edge. It comes right off, but seems to want to return. The belt looks A-OK, so I am not too worried. I'm hoping that the belt will "wear in", as mine only has 2500 miles.
It takes about 20 minutes to clean the residue off, so it definitely isn't a big chore to do.
-
I have 7000 miles on mine, does the same thing, and is the same cause. Cleaned it several times, now I just ride it. When it sits overnight it makes the noise for less than two or three take offs and does not do it for the rest of the day........ :o
-
Thanks guys. I guess its not serious then. Mine usually doesnt do it when I first ride it in the day, but as it get warm it does it until it cools off. Same problem????
-
if I had that problem I would asume the belt was slipping and fit a new one.I noticed the black residue on the pulley when I had it off a week ago and cleaned it off...BrakeKleen is good for that, I also noticed a slight groove in the drive pulley at both inner and outer limits of the belt so presumed that it was wearing a bit and eventually would need replaced
-
The more I thought about this, what I think is actually the root cause, is the the belt is probably stretching a bit on take off from a dead stop, or very slow start. This would narrow the width a bit, which would cause it to almost slip a very small amount, leaving the residue on the rear pully. From what I understand, the Dayco 8206K is the replacement belt for the OEM belt. The only difference is the Dayco is Kevlar re-inforced. I'm thinking that the Dayco would not stretch as much, which would probably help things out.
Another this that I did to help it, was to set my idle down to the specified 1400-1600 RPM. Seemed to help it some.
-
So where do we get a dayco belt??????

dont know which one your needing but here you go

I got the same growling at take off sometimes on my -09 500 r. also have a wisseling sounds when driving at 70 kmh and its very anoying. had it at the workshop and they rugged up the edges in the clutch, ( the sounds comes from that the gripping part of the clutch gets worn, like shined when its supposed to be a rugged surface. anyway two weeks after its been in the workshop the growling is back so i just think that the clutch is of a bad quality.
So i heard of a brand called malossi a scooter sparepart brand for tuning and found this, maybe its time for a change?? check the link!!!!

I think this cluth might get our scooter a quicker take off too.. =)

I see 7000 miles. Did it do this from day one or is it something that happens as things wear in? I haven't noticed any of this noise so far. Is it something I can expect as I hit so many miles?
-
It was my rear break.Cleaned it up,a little nevercease on the slider pins and no more noise. Checked the belt.cleaned and dry lubed the weights, all looked good there. ;D ;D ;D

Hi There, I was wondering about the "growl" after reading the comments. Initially I never heard it coming from my scooter. Then again, my scooter was never running properly from the start. Now that they have sorted out the problem with the performance and the scooter seems to be performing the way it should, now I hear the "growl". I can hear it when pulling away and seem to think I can hear it when accelerating on the open road, at least I think it's there but hidden somewhat behind the road and wind noise. I will check and clean the rear brake and see if it helps. Generally I have had such a time with the dealer that I don't want to now go back and complain about this noise so I've decided to ride it out and see how it goes at least until the next service which is at 4000km if I can remember correctly, I'm currently on 2000km. I must say since they sorted it out it is going so well and I'm enjoying the scooter a great deal. My first test indicated about 16,5 km/L which is better than what I was getting by nearly 2 km/L and I was riding quiet hard, I'm sure this will improve even more as the motor loosens up and I learn to improve my riding skills. Regards for Durban RSA.

i hear it and have only done 100km - is this a problem??

Hi fella's, The only input I can give is this: The STOCK multi var, and clutch are made from common stamped steel. The aftermarket (Malossi) are case hardened steel. The advantages should be obvious. The draw back is you MUST replace the multi var, AND the clutch to gain the full benefit. ANY kevlar belt you buy will not eliminate the form of the parts they are running on. Most people running the larger scoots. assume the quality is in the price tag! I can tell you the parts are the same as the smaller scoots. (to a degree) Look at the posts for the 50cc-125cc, and you will see there are more "mods" than the larger scoots. I am not trying to ride on the Interstate, But I will put my scoot against yours from light to light! The point being there are LOADS of things to improve the larger scoots. The "growl" seems to get louder on the bigger scoots. It can be fixed, but not w/ more stock parts, or a better belt! Ps. I do not work for Malossi, just like their parts...How about a Kymco 500 doing 130mph!

..The glazing is a normal occurance..the pads are kinda rough when new, however they will glaze over after a few miles of riding..
..if the shop didn't rough the pads evenly, or if they disfigured them or the springs at all, that could cause an unbalanced condition in the clutch that might be contributing to your growl..
..quicker take-off can be achieved by installing stiffer springs in the fly clutch..
..I've had good experiences with Malossi products..Installed a Malossi variator in my Agility 50 that put me over 50mph..
peace

now done 500km - getting worse and I am getting a vibration from the drive train at 130kph
-
:(except for the noise when taking off, I now also have a vibration at 110kph and on.- could it be that the drive belt is lose???
-
Jan, mine is smooth as glass at 130 KPH, that as fast as I have had it. At 110 KPH (about 70 MPH) I can hardly feel it running. Something is out of balance. I would try the tires first before I got into looking at the drive train. If under warranty take it to the dealer and have them check the balance, especially the rear tire.
-
will take it back to check - I am now sure something is out of balance - Thanks guys
-
;D noise gone - it was clutch glazing - apparently I right the bike to soft - lol
-
If it re-occurs you can install lighter fly springs to allow a better "bite" on the clutch.
-
going back up the threads there is mention of "idle at 1400-1600 rpm " or some such values....idle on my machine was set at 750rpm ...and I found that too fast and slowed it down
-
tx Zombie but the bike has a two year warranty so I dont want to do to much
-
:( the noise is back and loudly so - will take it back again!!
-
There may be something out of round, or out of balance in your clutch. Perhaps a shoe not moving freely. Try to push them toward a new part since it has come right back w/ the same problem! Not to hi-jack but how many people have FACTORY trained mechanics at their dealers? The closest dealer to me has their son working for them, and hires his friends when they are out of school. NONE are certified in anything!
-
you are 100% right - will push them to replace the clutch - the rest is perfect!
-
Mine had this growling sound too! Every time it growls i would clean the clutch and its back to normal but after a thousand or more kms it comes back again. Drilled some holes on the clutch bell, more than 2tkms now and still no growling. Better and smoother acceleration.
-
What do the holes do? I'm sure I don't understand!
-
Maybe you can show us a pic??
-
...I had an instance where I was screwing around with my clutch...i got one of the rubber cushions turned into a position it wasn't accustomed to being in...caused one of the "arms" to stick slightly, and was not releasing with the other two...made my A50 growl at take-off...

...hope you smoothed down the edges of the drilled holes.....could be grinding away at your pads....hhmmm...
-
hello after having my scooter twice at the shop to get the pads in the clutch rugged cause of growling i got a bran new clutch installed on the warrante, but i havent had a chance to drive much because of winter and snow.. hopefully this one will perform better. What should i do if the same problem occur? I´m tired of taking the scoot to the workshop, specially when it so new (-09)

Install the Malossi set-up for your scoot. http://www.malossiusaonline.com/Malossi_Clutches_s/312.htm (http://www.malossiusaonline.com/Malossi_Clutches_s/312.htm) Glad to hear they took care of you at the dealer though.
-
??? my noise is back again - went to the Malossi agents and they are bringing a new clutch set up for the exciting 500 - the have the variator - maybe I do both??
-
Heck yeah do both!!! If you have the opportunity to change it all out for the better, why not! While it is FRESH on your mind, figure where you would want more response from your throttle, and build that into your mod. You can get neck bending torque, or eyetearing top end out of your scoot. the roller weight will change MOST of the performance. You do not need to tune the clutch as much on a larger scoot. The multivar will give the tuning you want. Heavy rollers will give you a slower, more even throttle response. Lighter rollers will give a quicker response, with a fall off at the top end. Either way I say GO FOR IT!
-
;)Damn I want both - top end and faster take off -- lol
-
;)Damn I want both - top end and faster take off -- lol
I've had success with both while riding a sportsbike. :)
-
Thanks for the clarity, Zombie. Succinctly stated.

;)Damn I want both - top end and faster take off -- lol
Try the Dr. Pulley slidders shaved 2 secs on my 0-100kph based on my GPS and higher top end
-
Cant seem to find any - out of stock
-
Which are you looking for Jan.?
-
I read somewhere on this board that the Dr. sliders for the 500 were discontinued due to failures. I have looked around for them too and not found any.
I would have tried them but now am looking at Malossi and/or J Costa complete variators.
Oh yeah, mine is growling on take-off now too. But we're saying that it's probably just a matter of glazing on the clutch shoes?
-
Did they say what the problem was? Had a problem with a 1st set of sliders but we concluded that it was the pulley that had a problem so ordered a new set of pulley and sliders so far so good. Ü
-
The Jcosta looks like a very cool var. I have read loads of reviews on other forums/site that all agree it works better on a light 4t engine/scoot than on a heavier 4t or any 2t. The consensus that I have seen is it wears too quickly. However the operation is flawless. Perhaps w/ a few more years under their belt it may replace the ramps, and rollers we all use but for now the pins wear too fast for the every day Joe. (as the pinns wear the ramps do not close as far)
-
I tried to find where I read the Dr. Sliders for the 500 were discontinued but I can't find it now. I don't think I dreamed it, though. Something about them coming apart because of the power of the engine. Gonna look around again and see if they're available anywhere. Sorry if I've given wrong info.

Not at all, about a year ago I had read about a seperation of the casing from the barrel. I posted about that also not remembering what the exact case was. I hav heard/read nothing of that nature since. http://www.martinracingdealer.com/CategoryProductList.jsp?cat=Parts+by+Type%3ANylon+Sliders+and+Rollers&offset=100 (http://www.martinracingdealer.com/CategoryProductList.jsp?cat=Parts+by+Type%3ANylon+Sliders+and+Rollers&offset=100) This page has them for the 500 in lots of weights.
