I broke a piston ring .. ya I'm dumb .. can I use any 48mm piston ring like
a chainsaw one .. of do I have to order a whole new piston kit
Please help.me
-
go with piston kit not much on ebay
-
But why can't I use any 48mm piston ring?
-
its posable you could use one but each ring has a difrent job. seals oil scraper etc. better off getting the proper piston ring set. but from what i have seen its only $20 or so for the piston and rings. when just rings are around $10-15
-
Ive looked. only 48mm set of rings i see comes with piston to. and thats 39.99 and its from autotech355 ebay.
And he is closed his store till nov 14th. i just thought since i have a sh** load of lawn stores snd bike shops i could get one around here. but if u type 48mm piston ring on google. top pick is a sthil chainsaw. witch is 80cc 48mm piston.
So is a yamaha pw 80. and a suzuki rm80.
-
Piston rings are pretty precise things. Usually there is a stack of 3 - 5 rings,
each does a different job. The differences are in the angle of the edge and
end gap. It is better to have the exact one but any will work after a fashion.
Try one and see. Just try to get the same position one. The bottoms are usually
oil scrapers, the tops are for compression.
-
Some of the big bore kits use a chrome top ring and a carbon bottom, I would check if the piston youre re ringing has a beveled edge ring landing or not and if so how steep of an angle. If there is no bevel I would say ya you can use any ring that isnt beveled, ie chainsaw. You can use 2 carbon graphite rings but not 2 chrome molys Ive heard, but not sure because Ive never tried.
Good luck man, its not too bad at least its a common size. Also the reason the yamaha and suzukis have more displacement than the honda/kymco is their stroke is longer than ours.
-
Also theres a guy named tazland on hondaspree.net that sells the 48mm kits also, his ebay name is chopchop*123 I think.
-
Ok so i went down to the chainsaw shop. Lol and dudes dead on match rings look identical
But ohhh no. Raindrop has another f*** up. put rings in. start bike. idle for 10 min. then chill ten more. then
PoP. why does god hate me. wtf blew bottom ring. oh no not the new one. nope
The sh**ty cheap looking one that came with kit.
Am i putting in rings wrong. ? I used old piston for reference. i swear never been so pist at myself
I enjoy all this input cause boy i need it.
Holy sh** guys i looked at piston and toast. will taz kit fit on mine. ? 48mm kit or should i get same kind of piston. ?id rather have the better piston kit. im so confused
-
At this point I would recommend splitting the case and getting the old piston and ring material out of it, I would just do a complete rebuild honestly.
Have you checked your crank for side to side or up and down play? Something sounds like its wrong to keep breaking rings, maybe your cylinder is messed up and its catching rings. To install them you just line them up with the dowel pin on the piston with the ring gap and squeeze them together.
-
Im not sure which one you have but try to get ahold of him and see what he says. Honestly tho think about splitting that case, its pretty important to make sure the messed up stuff is all out of there.
-
Crank moves fine. it was the bottom ring and the piece that broke came out. so did piston is just banged up were ring goes. lucky i ripped apart after the pooof. what is that extra thin ring for. it just seems point less to put a ring over that ring. and the first ring i broke did it with my fingers putting on piston. the ring that blew this time was while it was running
All the stuff i orderd is on ebay 80cc bbk, race varitior.
Next friday comes intake, 24mm carb, cable and filter 130.00
And a leo vince exhaust 169.99 . i knew it was gonna cost money to go fast. but f*** it i got all winter to make this
Fast and prettty.
-
To install them you just line them up with the dowel pin on the piston with the ring gap and squeeze them together.
Watch video on you tube. ya i put the rings in wrong. ? That will make it blow wont it
I put piston on crankshaft then jug. ? Video says wrong. slide piston in jug first then attach to crankshaft. ?
-
I dont do it that way, but you can do it which ever way works for you.
-
I dont do it that way, but you can do it which ever way works for you.
So what is the right way? Dude I need a joint .. lol stressed out
-
I always put the piston on the crank 1st, THEN install the jug... To Me, It was to hard to try the other way...
-
Same it just feels like you can twist the piston easier when its in the jug already, dunno Im gonna try it next time just to remember why I dont do it lol.
-
Doesn't matter. It is easier to put the piston on the crank first. Then just slide the cylinder over the piston. Make sure the ring gaps are aligned on the locators first.
There is a right way and a wrong way to install the rings. Upside down is no good. No oil ring on 2 strokes.
-
Whats thin ring for two big ones one thin. it seems wierd to put ring on top of ring
Link to kit i got. should have went with corsa

-
Have you actually received the kit yet?
That is just a generic picture. That thin one looks like an oil ring. 2 strokes have no oil ring.
-
Yes i have. Its there. and old piston on 50cc head had one to. so i assumed needed to go on. ?
f***ed up thing is other kits dont have that thin ring.
-
Just looked at that pic again... I have no idea what that is. I retract my previous statement. Doesn't really look like an oil ring.
-
Doesn't come with any directions?
-

-
No directions. :(
But if u go on you tube and look up sym bore kit this dude puts one on. i have no clue what the hell it does
Looks like a spacer but bottom slot on piston is same as top. or grove should i say
-
Looks funny. It's not round but like a polygon shape.
-
Dude on video says oil skrit ring. ?
-
Another question no arrow on piston to point to what side. but there are to holes on piston does that face exhaust side cause intake is on the side on moped. so does it face to rear tire or handle bars is the question?
-
Well damn... Check out this OEM diagram. It shows that same funny ring bellow the bottom ring.

Sure wish Zombie was around he'd tell you exactly what you need to know
Diagram doesn't really help you orientate the piston does it. Sorry I can't help more, I've never torn apart my ZX. I want to say the ring gaps go away from the exhaust port. Don't quote me on that though. I've only put a BBK on my People, not my ZX. Best thing I can tell you to do is search the forum. Look for zombie's posts. He's very knowledgeable, especially when it comes to the ZX.
-
The crinkled ring is to put under the bottom ring, I guess it helps it seat better.
What ever side of the piston doesnt have the cut out for the boost port is the side you put towards exhaust. generally there is a half moon cut area on the piston skirt for the boost port, which is opposite of the exhaust port.
-
DUDE I TOTALLY PUT PISTON ON WRONG? HAD HALF MOON SIDE FACING EXHAUST! THINKING THATS WERE THE FLOW OF COMBUSTION GOES!
So is that how i blew my rings?
-
?
-
i would have thought so...
-
What do you mean by "blew the ring" actually? Did the ring break? Generally when you instal a piston in backwards it will break the piston, you got lucky it didnt.
-
I forgot about the boost port. I'm surprised it ran at all.
Don't feel bad. I shattered my rings after a week. My kit was a lot more than yours. It happens. If you didn't score the cylinder up too bad you're lucky. I was not so lucky. Take your time. Soak the piston, rings, and pin overnight in 2t oil. And for gods sake, make sure you're not running lean. Change the main jet right away. That will kill a piston and rings real quick.
-
Ill take pics for ya eyes 8)
f***ing windows 98 lmao
192kb .. my freaking avatar is bigger than that
Guess I gotta tweek them
-
Windows 98! Damn :D
Photobucket.com for pics. Free and easy to use, just copy and paste the image code.
-
Boost holes face rear tire or front tire
-
Boost port rear tire, exhaust out front near front tire.
-
So even tho the intake is on side. The piston would go in like a dirt bike
Exhaust front intake back .. I know I'm bugging. But I don't wanna mount piston
wrong again .. there is letters no arrow ..
-
That is the correct position.
-
So i got my intake and carb and cable today but no extra jets like package said.. sh**ty. :(
