Title: winter/all-weather tires
Post by: JC on October 09, 2012, 12:49:59 AM
I can't seem to find any distributors of winter/all-weather tires on line or here in the states. Any of you guys across the pond have a hookup on tires so I can ride in the winter? HELP!!!

Bridgestone ML50 Molas are great all year tyres and not any more expensive than other brand name tyres. Last time i got mine i got them off ebay, just be careful tho its from a trusted seller and not from Asia, theres a lot of fake crap around out there  :o

Most decent online shops will have them, tried google shopping tab?

If you got the tools to fit it then it should be easy enough, i just put mine in to get done. Guy charged me £20, Inc fitting new valves, but i had to take the wheels off and drop them off. Rear wheel is a pain in the hole, need exhaust off and rear mudguard off 1st.

I've just got a set of rims to each tire, so its bolt off, change and then bolt on, but some of the danes on the danish forum i hang out at have been creative:

A spade also works for breaking the bead : put the wheel on the floor next to a wall, put the spade on the tyre against the rim, and step on the spade with your full weight while leaning against the wall... Works every time for me...

+1 BTW for the Bridgestone ML50...

Anyway, before you buy a tyre, always search the web for reviews and comments about that particular type of tyre.

Don't go by brand name alone, even the best manufacturers have one or two types in their collection that are rubbish. For example a Michelin Pilot Sport is great, while a Michelin SM100 is mediocre at best...

Also, what's more important than people saying it's a good tyre is the absence of people saying that it's a bad tyre. Some people will promote anything they own, while negative reviews are mostly based on negative experiences in reality.

As for fitting the tyres yourself : at first it will be extremely frustrating, but once you have worked out the tools and the tricks, it can be relatively easy.. But if you don't plan on doing this often, it's certainly wiser to go to a local shop and have them do it for you. Beware that at some shops they're not amused when you buy the tyres somewhere else...

Quick question, I'm about to order winter "tyres" ;) for you Europeans, and I'm wondering if I order both 130/70-12's instead of 120/70-12 up front, is the only thing that will be affected be my speedometer reading? The place I'm ordering from is out of the 120's in the tire I want and I had a close call today and need to switch them up soon. Thanks guys

...130s are a bit wider as well...check the fit between the shochs, and whether there is room beneath the fender...

..without some mods...

...a front 130 would actually make the speedo closer to true...lol..

No mods haha. The forks at their narrowest part is 6". The 130 is a hair over 5" and the 120 is a hair under 5". It would be nice for the Speedo to be closer to true lol

You may find the handling off and steering is heavier using the wider from tyre? Speedo should be exactly the same since the height stays the same, only width changes. I went from normal to low profile tyres on my beetle, means when i drive i have to take off 10% from my speedo to get my actual true speed.

The indicated hight of a tyre is a percentage of its width - it's relative, not absolute...

Therefore a 130/70-12 will have a slightly larger diameter than a 120/70-12...

You'll probably need about 7mm of extra headroom for a 130/70-12.. But since tyre sizes aren't as exact as one would expect, and you're changing the shape of the tyre by putting it on a narrower rim, there's only one way to find out...  ;D

The "130/60" part indicates that the width of the tread is 130mm (5.1")
and that the tire has an aspect ratio of 0.60 (or 60%), which means that
the sidewall height is 60% of the width of the tire.

So the width is always known but the height must be calculated. I'm not
sure why they did it that way, probably to confuse you into letting a friendly
tire dealer figure it out for you...

You really think the handling will be that off? Do you think it would be wise to go one size down? I figured with the snow, ice, and rain the more surface area the better

I've noticed no significant difference in handling when I went from a 90/90-10 to a 100/90-10 on the front wheel of my 10" Agility....

But then again, the 10" has always been a nervous unguided missile anyway, one of the reasons I bought a 12" as well...  ;D

Learn something every day  :) Never knew that about the heights? Well there you go  ;)

Any time i upgraded my tyres to wider ones on old cars with no power steering i always felt the steering a bit heavier, would assume the scoot would be the same. It may not make much difference, i dont know cos i never tried it tho on a scooter. Yet  :D

I cant see it making too much improvement in ice or bad weather over a good set of aftermarket tyres in the stock sizes tho, if you hit ice on 120's its going to be the same outcome as it would be if you had 130's imo.

I would stick with stock 120 width myself on the front prob.

It's definitely my first choice to stay with the stock sizes. I just don't know how long I can wait for a restock  :-\

Thanks a lot, Word. Now this threw my whole plan off. The Avon tires are all weather and I can use them all year while the urban snow tires may be better for the winter but the rest of the year would be a waste. How are the vipers in rain and such? Are they still sticky? The vipers are more than $40 cheaper each too!!! ::) ;D

Just to confuse you again.........  ???

I prefer a more patterned tyre for all year round than the slicker ones like the Avons.  :-\

Never tried those particular tyres tho so i cant say for them, if Word says these are ok then they will be, i just always found better wet grip with more tread pattterned tyres myself, and i ride on a lot of wet days.

..tried and true tyres...in my opinion...every time it rains, im riding on 'm..

..naturally, i slow down some in the rain, but i still ride pretty aggressively..

..seems i'm always in a hurry anymore...dang...

Streido, I think the same way and if you look, the irc urban snow has a distinct pattern for rain/snow/sleet. Seems perfect for any time its cold.

Word, I slow down in the rain as well, just looking to not slow down as much as with the stockers ;D

I was gonna do the winter tires but I got some info that the vipers are great year round so instead of using the winter tires for 3 months and still having to buy better tires for the rest of the year I just bought these and will use all year.
