Title: varaitor blown up
Post by: skippy on September 13, 2012, 07:13:39 PM
just a rant.... as you prob know the a50 is not running good. done 6 more plug chops today. from an 88 jet which was ok last week to an 95 jet today which half way through a loud noice and no transmition. looked down at the clutch cover pissing oil out. walked her home. took of the cvt cover and the varatior was lose and bits every where.took it all apart the varatior shims have gone so very sloppy on the boss. the stage 6 roller shims are flat on one side after 1 week i put them in only done 20 mile since.the folllowers on the plate are all broken. then narkau hq belt is slightly worn on one end thought that that had rubbed on the bendrix.

has anyone ever heard of this befor?

so it looks like its time to buy a multivator and try to get an oem belt. will ring the local kymco deeler and see if i can get oem belt.costing i could do with out

What variator was it? Your stock one? Theyre hard as nails usually im sure if it was the stock?

Only thing i can think is maybe you didnt locktight the variator nut on when you were last in there and its worked loose? The variator would get trashed if that happened at 5000-8000rpm no probs i would think? What shims are you talking about too? I have no shims in mine at all? Never was any? And where did the oil come from?

Bummer whatever happened....isnt it your birthday as well? Happy birthday eh?

lol yes thanks for the wishes.

the shins...... in side the variator that contacts to the boss should be a a shim type thying that moves round the boss. thats all gone. worn away as when the varaitor is on the boss there is about 5m gapin between now.
it was an after market varaitor of ebay a chinese coppy bought that as it came with shorter boss.
the nut was on solid. had to impact wrench it off.
dont know yet where oil came from.but cleaned up cvt and clean now so will have to check when she is up and running.

any one know where i can get a good cheep varaitor from in the uk. looked up MALOSSI MULTIVAR VARIATOR KIT but cheepest i can find is ebay £75. just sounds steep was planning £50-$60 so may be the polini variator but cant find any. all sold out

http://www.motorcyclesparesuk.com/product-p/VX513790.htm (http://www.motorcyclesparesuk.com/product-p/VX513790.htm)

£56 plus delivery, didnt check delivery price tho.

Think the pollini is pretty good too tho. I ran a chinese race variator for over a year, had no probs and its still good to reuse now. Gkt a little wear on it but it still seems fine and seems to work. Must have near 10,000km on it and it was under £20 off ebay. I would def contact the seller and ask for at least a full refund. Tell him it wrecked the rollers and belt etc too so you think he should pay for that too, or send you replacement belt and rollers. If its a bigger seller they tend to be ok sometimes.

x 2 chinese parts works great on kymco scoots. theres a lot of parts you can swap out and use.

think it has started an old problem off had to use steel putty as there way a large hole in case behind the varaitor. think this explosion may have cracked it. but will check that later.

ordered the narkau variator from euroscooterparts. seemed the best option as slightly shorter boss and comes with 5.3g rolers which i was going to try anyway. just hope there good as a lot cheeper than the compertition, at £39.95 + post.
im off work tuesday so if it comes in time can get it sorted. just hope that oil leak can be sorted and im not pissing money away...

just a 23100-keb7-9000 belt to find now. emaled local kymco dealer last night but no reply. there is some i have found but will take 3 weeks post. will keep looking

Could you not tap the hole where the leak is and screw in a bolt or screw with a rubber gasket/washer to seal it?
Title: Re: varaitor blown up
Post by: skippy on September 14, 2012, 07:45:39 PM
its a big ass hole. about the size of a 2 p  (20-25 mm) at the mo i have put some steel putty round> i say some .lots...
behind the variator there is a bolt with a hex style fitting. the hex has been rounded of by someone. then looks like a screwdriver has been hit with a hammer to tap the bolt round. but they missed bad.. strate through the casing.
i took the bolt out last time than sanded down the area put the putty aroung and behind. just befor it set titened the bolt back then put another layer over.....then another etc held well..... untill now. looks ok now... i have cleaned it all again checked all oil seals. looks ok... will get the parts then run it. will see then if its leeking still,.

Man, sounds like someones bodged it up and sold it on to you after they knew they'd wrecked it  >:(

I doubt that stuff will hold it long, especially if your now running higher revs etc? If you knew someone with a machine shop you could prob drill it out to the size of an oil drain plug and thread it to screw one of them in? If it doesnt interfere with the belt of variator? Must be something online that you can buy to repair it? May be too large tho?  or have someone weld a plate over it, be difficult to weld it but i could be done.

Last resort, fix it up so it runs ok and trade it in for a newer one at a dealers  :-\

no chance lol heat and sole gon into my kimmie.lol may get some one to weld a plate over if its leaking again. the putty i got was for engine cases, but prob not for this size hole...

yes think some one did brake it then sell it on but only cost £250 so for a 2010 with 10500km when i got it was a bargin but with all the mods i will have spent close to same again. but what fun....

try jb weld.its a liquid weld you mix together. might work not sure how much heat it can take.

hello blue. its that sort of thing i have used but for engine cases. works like araldite two parts to mix to harden. the jb weld is like a soft putty but not recomended on engines. as you say may be temp or not resistant to oil?

think i have just taken over your bad luck since you rode and broke your shocks a fue months ago, your luck has got better ,mine has gone worse... think its someone elses turn now... ;D

there is a liquid metal they make for motors I think its made by lock tight it comes in may colors for the strength you need. and also a silver metal tape that they put on mufflers might work that can handle heat.but its got to handle the pressure too.   Good luck

Just sayin.....for a tenner? Lot of work involved to strip it down and rebuild it could be an xmas holiday project if you have a garage and the know how? Or keep checking ebay, sooner or later you'll pick up a complete engine for £99 or less.

will have a closer look at that tomorrow. thought that part was one pice with the clutch,  or is it  the fly wheel side ? im looking at the rods that go into the head.but could be looking either way. if looking in side out...

I think its the right bit, took me a bit to get my head round it but yes, think its looking from inside out, that big hole is where the crank comes out im sure so thats beside where yours is cracked.

Other side is there too http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kymco-Agility-50-Scooter-RH-Side-Rear-Engine-Casing-4-Stroke-2008-/350581907318?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item51a04f5f76&_uhb=1 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kymco-Agility-50-Scooter-RH-Side-Rear-Engine-Casing-4-Stroke-2008-/350581907318?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item51a04f5f76&_uhb=1)

Might be worth buying and if you can seal the original then at least you have a spare there. Just seems cheap at £10.

just looked up on Kymco Agility 50 EN (http://www.scribd.com/doc/18070203/Kymco-Agility-50-EN#) that part is where the oil pump goes, behind the fly wheel. on the pic you can also make out the back of the starter motor. :'(

Ah well. Keep looking, one will turn up and hopefully you can find an easier solution before then anyway so you may not need to strip it down. Best solution would be weldor braise a plate over it if poss.
Title: Re: varaitor blown up

think thats what i will do. if you look on Kymco Agility 50 EN (http://www.scribd.com/doc/18070203/Kymco-Agility-50-EN#) at the bottom. on section 11 crankcase/ crankshaft. you will see a pick. its all one piece( the case) so will be crank out ect. but on the pick you can see the cam chain tensioner slipper bolt. ( just under the starter bendix and above the crank seal.)its around there that is a hole. looks like that bolt that is where the oil leak is.

That might be the part. I just saw this..... So maybe the case splits. Have a look inside yours and see if you see it. Must come apart somehow? This brand new part is £24 i think.

should do with that alloy mesh. i have put her back together now. but itching to see if she works, but realy should wate 24h to cuir. just hope its all sorted, that the engine is ok as not tested since she blew. going to be close as i need her for work tomorrow. :-\

not worked. just checked the a50 and a little oil under her. taken the cvt cover off etc and oil over the fix and crank seal....
dont know if the fix is leaking or not, cant see how it can. so may have to cut the crank seal out, just so i can olimanate that. if it still leaks after new crank seal, dont know what to do.

I would ask Kymco direct if they can get a new crankcase half for you and just replace it if they have them cheap. Or just biy a 2nd hand engine for it. Or buy a cheap non-runner off ebay or Gumtree and use it as a parts scoot, take what you want off it then paet out the rest and get your money back.

Looks like its just a waste of your time fixing it every week or so, doesnt want to hold. I jus wonder if other cheapo chinese scoots case would fit?
Title: Re: varaitor blown up
Post by: skippy on September 17, 2012, 08:15:01 PM
it is possable but did i read somewhere that the engine is an extended gy6 engine(longer)? i keep seeing on parts saying 139 qma/qmb. is this the same engine ?
Title: Re: varaitor blown up
Post by: streido on September 17, 2012, 10:12:43 PM
I think the 12" wheel scoots like ours are the longcase but the ones with 10" wheels are the shortcase versions.

Maybe see if you have a bike breakers near your area?

may try welding first. if i weld a plate over the casing and the bolt it should hold. but god help if engine goes boom as i will not be able to strip it down, with a plate over the tensioner bolt. i just dont think i have the confedance to do a total rebild. or the money for another engine

Maybe email these guys and ask if they have anything, they got me some great marine paint from the US that i couldnt find anywhere else... http://www.frost.co.uk/ (http://www.frost.co.uk/)

Or this stuff gets good reviews.... http://www.maplin.co.uk/metal-epoxy-resin-46006 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/metal-epoxy-resin-46006) and this is meant to be ok.... http://www.hemmingsdiy.co.uk/quickste.htm. (http://www.hemmingsdiy.co.uk/quickste.htm.)  Whatevet you use i would let it cure for a few days just to be sure its gone off properly.
Title: Re: varaitor blown up
Post by: skippy on September 18, 2012, 12:41:01 PM
thanks streido but its game over.....
just took it to the chinese scooter geru near by. he said thet nothing would hold as the presure is too great. he could weld it over for me for £25 for the welding. not bad but he then needs to strip the whole engine down as the heat will duck up all the seals and damage the inside. strip the engine down at a cost of £105 but i have to take him just the engine...
i dont know what to do. im a big fan of keeping engines and bodys etc  original. so dont fancy getting a second engine to replace it un less i have to.
i also dont have the confedence to strip the engine down im ok with most but i hate engine timing etc and the tools to strip will probly cost a fortune also.
i could also find another agility and use mine as a doner for it but all costs money which i have not got (will have to go deep into overdraft which is high already)
 what should i do?
Title: Re: varaitor blown up
Post by: streido on September 18, 2012, 01:06:11 PM
If it was me i would keep it till i found a cheap agility engine on ebay, im sure i saw them go for £50-£60 before  :-\

Would also check ebay for local complete scoots, preferably another A50, going cheap like stolen/recovered bikes and build one good one from the two bad ones.

I know what you mean about doing a full rebuild cos i would be the same. I do want to do it at some point but only on a spare scoot and only when i can afford the loss if it all goes bang!

Not looked up whats involved in swapping just the crankcase? Do you need to split the case or is it a seperate bit? If you do decide to part with it then you may get the most money by parting it out on ebay rather than selling as one complete lot.

I still think you could pick up a cheap engine tho locally, theres thousands of A50's around here. Mine only cost me £380 with full yrs MOT and tax with 5000/6000 miles on it. A complete engine saw should be pretty simple to do.
Title: Re: varaitor blown up
Post by: skippy on September 18, 2012, 01:20:50 PM
the case is bolted together left and right, with the crank and shafe   sandwiched between. so would have thought every thing dismantaled top to bottom just to get the 2 halfs off, he has a used case for £40 but i will still need to strip all engine down. i keep looking on ebay, im sad every day look at all kynco 50 products "newly listed" one used engine £250 devivered. no cases. bikes tend to be cheepest £450.
gumtree seems to be better at around £300 used bike but nothing for 100mile. not much following of kymco round hear.im starting to think £105 is not a bad price as when i take how much it would cost for me to strip with tools and oil seals etc would prob cost more....
Title: Re: varaitor blown up

Just had a quick look on fleabay, saw this but too expensive http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/58-plate-Kymco-Agility-50-Engine-unit-/320970665123?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4abb57aca3&_uhb=1 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/58-plate-Kymco-Agility-50-Engine-unit-/320970665123?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4abb57aca3&_uhb=1)

If you look at the engine tho you can see the crankcase looks like its a seperate part and not part of the main block? Surely if you can find a cheap crankcase bit it would be possible to swap that out? May need to look into it more to see how it all comes apart then decide? If it is like you said then you may be fu©ked.

Up to you i s'pose, bummer to get all new parts on it and it decides to go all broke on you  :(

The price he quoted to weld it is ok and the labour costs dont sound expensive for stripping down an engine. You will prob find its pretty simple to remove the engine to take it over if you decide to do that. My vespa engine went in and out in 10-15 mins and was surprisingly easy. Just mark all electrical connections with tape and take pics of any parts in place before you remove them for referemce when refitting it. Or wait and keep checkin ebay, the season is almost over for fair-weather riders so some may be selling up.

yer ive bit the bullet took 5 min to take out.

looked at the crank case dont think its just a case of splitting from bottom or i would have.

taken it back to the shop. he will let me know if its worth welding or just change for a doner case.

dont know what the £105 intales as would have thought he would have to renew seals and gaskets etc. hope thets all in the price and not on top. will find out next week when he starts on it.

feel like my legs cut off already...
had some nice scoots in there. lots of vespas old reconditioned£3500 and ones for sale to restore.£500 some nice scudarias too £899 new....

Sounds like someones got ideas?  :D

Theres a place up here does old vespas with brand new engines in them for about £2500-£3500 on the road, painted any colour you like. Just sayin  ::).  ;)

I've just been out on mine for an hr and a half, had to force myself to come in. Hit 110km/hr on the dual carriageway and had to ease off cos i was crapping myself  :D Think thats about 60/65mph. That thing scares me everytime i go on it  :o Its all good fun tho.

lol.. i know what you mean..... fast cars i loved them... so exciting every time you go out... then soft tops. not as fast but when there is no roof 80mph feels like 150mph.... prob with all fast cars is..the last fue years to many cars on the road camras, etc...what is the point in a fast car if you cant go fast.
so i decided to get a scoot. save money. best thing i ever did. every ride on it scairs me... not the bike as sutch but all the planks that pull out infront or try to push me of the road. on the bike it cant reach high speads but 45-50 on a scoot feels faster....

forgot to say after the repairs the other day although she was leaking oil. with the new varaitor she was running perfect. 35-40 up hill all the way to work and back home again. top speed still 50mph on speedo. cant wate to get her back.

i would like a vespa or something like but restricted to a 50cc on car licence. if there was just a test to ride a 125cc i would take it like a cbt type thing.

You can sit a moped/twist & go scooter test im sure on a 125cc to get a license, means ypu cant ride geared bikes but save you doing a cbt every 2 yrs.

I had a look and i think i was wrong. You can sit a moped test but that just lets you ride a 50cc without L plates and you can carry passengers etc, but i can already do this anyway on my car license. Next step is the A1 test where you get a restricted license and can ride a 125cc with no L plates and can take passengers. Then the full A test lets you ride anything after 2 yrs of passing the test. Laws change in Jan 2013 so you loose the free upgrade after 2 yrs. Im goin to try sit my test Nov/Dec this year if poss before the changes coke in.

so what is involved in the a1 test? read the wright ups but seem vague? last test i took was driving class 2 for rigid lorries. was really hard took it twice then gave up.. was so hard to pass but was told that not many people pass it. 1 in 20 people ish.
would love to do the full test but cant justifie the price. not when it would just be for fun. but as i said dont think i would ever have a bike 125cc would be enough for me.

I know my bro did his full access bike test so he can ride any size bike straight away and he said he sat 2parts. 1st part was just riding around in the test centre showing you could figure of 8 and salom thro cones etc then they ask you basic maintenance stuff about yourbike. He had to pass that, sounded kinda like a bigger cbt i thk, then next day he did another test to pass the 2nd part he said.

Im hopefully going to sit my theory test in the next month or so then book an assessment lesson to see if the instructor think i will passthe test or he can tell me if im doing anything wrong. Then i want to pass my test before xmas if poss. I'll let you kniw more when i aply for it, got all the stuff somewhere about it. Think you can do just a 125 test tho. Im sitting it on my Vespa once i get more used to it

The Vespa i have is the only model of scooter allowed, thats why i got this one. It must be a.geared 125cc capable of doing at least 65mph.
