Title: Only 5 Kymco Scooters are made in Taiwan for the USA Market!
Post by: MassScoot on August 28, 2012, 04:27:08 PM
Not to say that a Kymco Chinese made scoots are terrible, by any means, but only the Downtown 200i/300i. GT200i/300i & the Xciting 500Ri are made in Taiwan for the US market today!

That's HUGE from 5 years ago, when only the "Agility" was made in China. I guess labor costs in Taiwan are increasing like everyone else is. My next guess is that Vietnam will be new "new" China in a few years!

I had a People 150 and now a People S 250. Both were made in Taiwan. I will probably keep the S 250 a while longer. It doesn't give me any trouble.

Honda has scooters made in China. The Elite 110 was made in China and the Honda PCX is made in Thailand.

Look at the vin

RFB-products manufactured in Taiwan
LC2-products manufactured in China

It is completely irrelevant where they are made.

Is the problem based on build quality or is it political? ie that you dont like China to be more of a "superpower" than the US?

Nobody complained when they all got cheap electrical & computer goods, iPhones, sportswear and clothes made in China?

china makes everything. two parts of china east and west that manufacures east china is the tat/garbage west china makes the good stuff. i think thats the right way round. china is a big place so you hear lots of good and bad things made in china. but what people focus on is the place "china" and cheep. there is still a lot of quality things that come from china.

like streido said"
Is the problem based on build quality or is it political? ie that you dont like China to be more of a "superpower" than the US?

what is a nasa rocket, every componant made by the cheepest bidder ie china. usa and uk etc cant under cut the market economey. just get use to the fact the future is bright the future is china

Guys....I have no problems with a scoot being made in China. That was not my intention @ all. I just wanted to point out that 5 years ago, every single Kymco USA imported scoot was made in Taiwan (with the exception of the Agility series) I remember reading reviews on the Agility 50cc & the 125cc & their thoughts about how it was "Made in China"

A quote from Skippy "Just get use to the fact the future is bright the future is China"

I have news for you. The labor costs in China are getting much higher as I write this. I think China has "maybe" 4-5 years worth of scooter manufacturing (maybe longer), then it will be pushed over to Thailand or better yet...Vietnam. One of my other favorites is indoor helicopter's in the Winter months (Efilte, E-Sky etc.) They ae all moving their factories over to Vietnam.

It has "nothing" to go with Politics my friends...It's all based on labor costs!

Yup, and when China and the rest of Asia gets too expensive or they become too "middle-class" to make our sh** for us for peanuts then there's always Africa....... They already have that planned im sure over at Apple etc.

We really only got ourselves to blame, we buy the sh** and dont complain about it as long as its cheap. If we didnt demand it then they wouldnt supply it.

I remember as a kid we couldnt afford to buy a tv, my mum rented it! And when sh** broke down we got a repair guy in to fix it. Now we just throw it away cos its easier and cheaper to just buy a new one. Thats messed up, doesnt make any sense does it  ??? Some poor guy (or kid) works 150 hrs a week for $4 just so we can go to Wallmart or some other store and buy a shiney new gadget for $299.

Old Geezer you never answered the questioned -- what do you have against China? If you own and ride a Kymco scooter there's a chance it, or its parts were made in China. Could be the computer you're using to surf the net is from China too.

Ironic.

I NEVER said any thing negative about China. And how I feel is none of your business. Others made it political, I don't do political post.

And anyway I don't know what the "questioned" was

Oh By the way I had a mainland China scooter once. It was so bad I ended up scrapping it out....

The computer I'm using is a Dell made about 30 miles down the road from me.

So what if it's made where? We must not look at the place but the Company behind the product. One company may have factories in China, Taiwan, Turkey, Thailand, etc. but all have the same factories and quality practices.

Could be the computer you're using to surf the net is from China too?

Here's a peek....

Quanta Computer Incorporated is a Taiwan-based manufacturer of notebook computers and other electronic hardware. It is the largest manufacturer of notebook computers in the world. Its customers include Apple Inc., Compaq, Dell, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, Alienware, Amazon.com, Casper, Cisco, Fujitsu, Gericom, Lenovo, LG, Maxdata, MPC, Research In Motion, Sharp Corporation, Siemens AG, Sony, Sun Microsystems, and Toshiba.

It may well be assembled along the road O.Geez but you'll find most, if not all, of the components were made in Asia and shipped to the US plant. Same here in the UK, weve gone from a nation of engineers and technicians to assembly line workers. Most of the products marked "Made in the USA" or " Made in the UK" should actually read "Made in China, knocked together in the USA/UK".

I know one reason for this is the UK was for tax and import reasons, companies paid far more or were limited in what finished goods they could import, parts were easier and cheaper tho. All they did was import all the components and get low-paid workers bere on minimum wage usually to assemble them, so getting around the import taxes and restrictions.

Like someone already said, our companies just cannot compete with cheap chinese labour and manufacturing costs. The lack of legislation, health & safety requirements, emmissions control and a whole host of other things over there means tbey can always cut our prices/costs.  :(

Geezer,

Streido had asked the question,

"Is the problem based on build quality or is it political? ie that you dont like China to be more of a "superpower" than the US?"

His reply was based off your earlier answer of what Axy posted where you said,

"Maybe to you, but you don't speak for every body."

I have a feeling he gathered from the tone of your reply (much as I did) that you had a problem with China. Your last reply suggested that you didn't, though one of your last remarks,

"Oh By the way I had a mainland China scooter once. It was so bad I ended up scrapping it out.... "

implies that you do.

I dont think O.Geez is being political Wolf, i DID believe he was from the Axy answer but he explained is is not, so i accept that. Still not sure what the problem with Chinese manufacturing is tho  :-\  The Chinese factory will make exactly what is ordered by their customer, so if the customer asks flr cheap ass, shoddy & cheally made products then that is what they will make. Same if it gkes the other way and the customer wants a high-end piece of equipment, ie and iPhone or pair of Nike's (made in china) then they will get a high-end product. I cant see how anyone can blame the factory, or the Chinese, who are just following the customers orders.

For us here in the US, historically, “Made in China”, products meant poor quality.  That is no longer the case.  Today we resent China because the products are made there instead of here.  So IMO it's jobs not quality today.  If we resent China it is because we want those manufacturing jobs here.  And yes, I too want more jobs here in The USA.

this is true 2 years ago i worked for a company in the uk that made components for airbuss a380 from scratch but just mechined alloy then anodised/painted. assembled in small bits then sent to brouton in the uk assembled into a wing then shiped to france to assemble to rest of the plain. but the company was part owned by rolesroyce. not be long befor all the industry has gone . ( i with 200 ish people made redudent. ) just gready people with a lust for money, wanting more. cut back till  work cant be done and some one under cuts the tender in another country.

Yep!

I've been installing/repairing Chinese automotive equipment for 7 years now. I've seen the worst and the best. China can make some serious crap but, they can also make some really quality products. The key is to buy from a trusted domestic retailer that backs their product up with excellent service and support. Anybody looking to buy a lift, DO NOT buy one from eBay or Harbor Freight. There are other retailers that sell better Chinese equipment for the same price. Bend Pak used to be a major American manufacturer of lifts. Made in China now. People think they're buying an American made lift and believe me they pay $$$ for it. If it weren't for the sticker on the column they'd never know. I hate to break to people but things made in the US/Europe aren't perfect either. All manufacturing is subject to defects, flaws, and shipping damage.

Biggest thing I see is user/installation error. Lifts fall over/cars fall off lifts because it was never installed correctly, bad concrete, lack of maintenance, and not using the damn thing properly. You'd be surprised at some of the things I see. And at major service station chains  :o. I'm talking about disabling safeties and arm restraints, then wrapping a bungee cord around the hydraulic release handle and walking away. Walking away while 3 tons of car drops to the ground. Forget damaging a customers car, what if a kid walked through that unlocked door to the shop and gets under that 3 tons  :o :o :o

100% true.  We're in this business for many years. I deal with Chinese suppliers almost everyday and they can make Class AAA products to Class D depending on your specs and budget.  In China, you deal with the supplier/trader. The supplier usually doesnt have a factory. He then looks for a factory that can manufacture your orders. We have three U.S. suppliers that have products manufactured in China. The label indicates the U.S. brand and their U.S. main office address but doesnt say "Made in USA" it only says "U.S.A."

I work as an audio engineer and Tech Director at a local university theater.  There, we have a large stash of the venerable Shure SM58 and 57 microphones.  You have seen these mics at just about any concert, be it at a church to the top arena rock events.  They are bulletproof and an "industry standard" since the 70's. Tech riders ALWAYS ask for them, and you will not find ANY venue with paid musicians without them.

Except, they haven't been made in the US for well over 12 years.

The biggest draw was that it was a quality "US" product... except that the electrics are made partly in China and the mics are actually built in MEXICO!  And the price for these are anywhere from $95 to $114 brand new.

But, because of the name, they still sell like mad.  Even when myself and other audio engineers have found other mics that sound better and even handle abuse better (Like the GLS ES58/57 from Orange County Speakers) for a third the price, musicians won't touch them.  They think that because of the rep, they are still US made and therefore better.  Even when you swap out the mic when some aren't looking (which is something I only do on church rental gigs. I would NEVER screw with a pro's rider) and they sound better, they think they're still using a Shure.

The point is that if you don't tell someone where a product is made, and if there is an average level of quality control (not even a great level), people will automatically believe the product is what they THINK it is.  They will think that Vespa 150S is made in Italy.  They will think their iPhone is made in the US.  They will think that their Thinkpad is STILL made by IBM!

It simply depends on how it performs and how it spec's.  Not where it's originally from.

Heard/read somewhere that Kymco has been focused (last couple of years) on higher profit margins like building engines, etc for BMW and other big name companies.   They moved the smaller, less profitable scooters to China for the cheaper labor.

Wheels: I cannot understand how I missed your reply! Let's see.....Most of Kymco's USA line-up is made in China now. Do you think for one minute if Kymco continued to build their scooters in Taiwan they could stay competitive? I think not. Yes....Being in sales myself, everything is profit margin my friend! They "had to" move many of their factories over to the mainland. I purchased a Kymco Super 8 150cc for $2300.00 last week to keep @ my parrents home in Florida. I paid $3300.00 for my Kymco People S200 (made in Taiwan) in 2005. It's really the same engine, just another 13cc's! My bet is my new Super 8 will be just as reliable as my S200.

"Thanks for all the Fish...been nice knowin ya!" July 15, 2012

Kymco has been designing, creating, copying, reproducing, and most importantly manufacturing scooter and motorcycle products since 1963? My point is regardless of which country is doing the hands-on production of these vehicles they all come off the assembley line for the same and only reason; profit. For the most part the company and it's sister companies produce a quality consumer appreciated product. Now my chagrin with you is that you enjoy posting snide, sarcastic, and negative remarks because  you evidently suffered buyers remorse. Let it go, man up, stop whining, and own your parting remarks of July 15. They were well received by most of us. And your efite little remark, "I'm sure you'll let us know if that isn't the case..right?" is confusing. What does that mean? What did you plan on gaining by making the remark? Are you hurting and angry because your Kymco scooter was not perfect and people on the other end did not behave the way you wanted them to? Man up, get over it and yes we always let each other know when the product does not perform. That's what men do. They talk about it. Fix it. And then get over it.

Conversely, I'm sure JP will let us know if his Honda succumbs to the same pattern of neglect and abuse he subjected his People to.

Right now I'm awaiting delivery on a 2009 Xciting 500 Ri that I bought with a salvage title from upstate New York. It looks like it only bounced off one side where some goombah was trying deerhunting with a scooter.

That wasn't you, was it, Mike?

It's white with the short windshield and only has 1800 miles on it.

I hope I don't get any grief trying to register it here in New Mexico on a salvage certificate, if I do, I'll go full outlaw and take one of the zeros off the side emblem, and when the cops stop me, I'll say it's a 50, no license needed, it's made in China.

You might explain that pattern to people that aren't me and don't know my People 250's history as well as you do (and better than I know it, apparently).

It rather amuses me that some ascribe some kind of motive to what I write, given that I've said FAR more positive thangs about Kymco than not. I just tell it as I have experienced it. If that's not good enough for you, fine, but I'm gonna ask you to back up what you say, as I have backed up what I have said.

So... have at it. Describe this pattern of neglect and abuse, and while you're at it, explain how you came to possess this insight. Waiting.

Dude, we know your history, you put 25,000 miles on a Kymco 250, running 60 miles a day, and most of that at 70 MPH, with an exhaust leak and no inclination to adjust the valves or tune the carb.

Why you would have anything bad to say about Kymco is unclear, when you really did quite well, despite having little mechanical aptitude.

Now you have a machine with half the displacement and the same trek to Dakkar each day, so, go little Honda.

It's not a big motorcycle, just a groovy little motorbike
It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys, that two wheel bike
Put on a ragged sweatshirt so we can ride my Honda tonight

Why you would have anything bad to say about Kymco is unclear, when you really did quite well, despite having little mechanical aptitude.

Now you have a machine with half the displacement and the same trek to Dakkar each day, so, go little Honda.

It's not a big motorcycle, just a groovy little motorbike
It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys, that two wheel bike
Put on a ragged sweatshirt so we can ride my Honda tonight

I believe it goes like this...

It's not a big motorcycle Just a groovy little motorbike
It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys that two wheel bike
We'll ride on out of the town to any place I know you like

Yeah, well, last time I heard it was in 1964, by the Hondells, on the Telefunken, in High Fidelity.

I put 60 miles every weekday on it from late April, 2012 until late June, 2012. Two whole months. Only about a month of that was interstate riding, too. But since you have all this on the record, please point out where I'm sugarcoating it.

Are you saying my valves and carb were not properly adjusted (because I have a mechanic who would beg to differ), or that a People 250 just isn't meant to do 70mph for a whole 20 days of commuting?

"hands on experience in the last 49 years..."
One, (1) !, Jprest. Just one. You win. You win! It's the 09 500Ri and smoother than a Tennessee Walking Horse, more acceleration than a GTO and just damn good fun. She's done every thing I've asked her to do and then some, including saving my life. Now I don't understand why you need to be so passive aggressive and disengenuous. How many? who cares? I'm having fun man. A little recuperation and almost ready to get back in the saddle again. Now pull your panties up and enjoy the hell out of that wanda honda thing. If it is congruent with other Honda products you should have a good reliable ride. Enjoy that. You don't need to poke little barbs at us. We're happy for you. If you would like to celebrate the lows and highs of scootering please join us but just cut the stupid sh**. How many?

Mike: I don't think we'll change JP. I think the best we can do is simply not reply to any of this threads/replies. You're correct, he's simply an angry person with Kymco. I think trying to "reason" with him will not work. He'll still will not leave this forum.....The best we can do is NOT reply to his nonsense!

It appears the only thang folx here want to change about me is my propensity to give not just the "pros," but the "cons," as well. If you assume that reporting a bad experience with a product is a personal affront because you own said product, well, I can't help you with how you choose to feel about that. If you assume that I only speak ill of Kymco, you're ignoring a pretty comprehensive history that runs counter to that (Google "kymco blog" and select the first link).

ce may be right -- maybe a Kymco People 250 is really only a good match for people with above-average mechanical talents, and all the tools and whatnot... or only good for occasional, leisure riding, and not up to a 30-mile, one-way commute at near-WOT. I've heard that said of the cheap Chinese no-name bikes, and that generally seems to hold true. When I was shopping for scooters, that's the kind of stuff I appreciated knowing about, up-front.

And it may turn out that the PCX is no more suited to this grueling commute (heh) than the People 250 was. Next week will mark two full months, so it will soon surpass the People 250's record for that commute. If it breaks down next week due to all the neglect and abuse it's taking, boy will I have some crow to eat.  But I won't sugarcoat it, either way. I'm not a fanboy -- I just write about my experiences, and how anyone particularly feels about it is not my concern. I'm not running for office.  :)

Well said MassScoot! You're absolutely right. Thanks man. I have read this poor little man's vitreole sp? for too long and I thought that I could challenge him just to man up and move on with this issue of his. When he posted his goodbye I thought, "problem solved", but he's back with his sarcasm and lack of any graciousness or concern for another member and ignoring inappropriate behavior is the best decision. Hope things are going well for you with your scooter. Ride it like you stole it! Enjoy,
Mike

Mike: I totally understood what you were trying to do. I knew he wasn't going to ""man-up" Do you ever notice that JP doesn't answer any of your questions? You asked him about his snippy BS reply to me & of course we never got one. Also...the most important one, his quote that he was leaving these forums. Seems like scootering takes up a good amount of his time (pretty sad) I don't have time to create a blog about my GT300i or my newly purchased Super 8, let alone his Honda PCX125. Don't get me wrong....scootering is a BLAST! Plus I really enjoy most of the people here. Just that my priorities are boating (short season), fishing, NFL & scoots. I have a rule, one sip of beer & I'm done scootering for the day. Considering I love to get my snap-on the weekends, I don't put on as many miles as I would like.

It's best that we simply ignore him. Or better, if he posts, ask everyone not to respond. If everyone did that, then I think he would find somewhere else to be a PITA. Funny...There is always someone that has to an idiot on forums.

Hi guys,

why this aggression against JP?
I value his posts since I joined this forum 3.5 years ago.
I don't mind what vehicle (if any!) someone drives, as long as his posts match the topics of this forum.

Maybe because he bad mouthed the forum, said he was leaving, yet now he's posting more than ever. And he still bad mouths the forum. This is a scooter forum yes, but does it have to be boring and dry too?

If by "bad-mouth," one means "said there were better scooter forums," yes. There are some out there that don't have religious wars daily over absolutely-settled topics like octane, for example.  :)

Most of us on here are just a bunch of rag-tag misfits, scooter nerds and oddballs so its expected we wont all get along or agree all the time. I got no problem with anything anyone posts, anytime, unless its plain racist or threatening, neither of which JP was. Seems in the last 3-4months theres been a lot of stupid, petty squabbles on here over stupid nonsense, we're turning into a bunch of old fishwives here  ::)

Im sure i piss some folk off at times just as others can piss me off at times, now i just tend to ignore subjects or people i have no wish to get involved with. Works for me. I got no time to get stressed or annoyed, i come here to help when i need it, offer it where i can and have a laugh along the way. I decided long ago to just go with the flow and accept folk for who they are, whether i like or agree is unimportant. We're all different, some more different than others, my mom always said i was "special"  ;D

I've always enjoyed jp's posts here.  No need to get your undies in a budle over his usually valuable posts.  I say the more info, the better especially for those folks new to the Kymco brand.  These are great scoots at a great price but not perfect by any means.  By the way I've had friends who recently bought bikes from Kawasaki, Moto Guzzi, Vespa, and Honda, and they all have had some type of problems in the first few months.

My Yager 200 is well assembled with a very nice finish and a quality look.  BUT.......above the proud "Made in Taiwan" sticker on the handlebar hub is a mis-aligned Kymco "K" applique.   Just sayin'!

Beads are awesome...  Whether at mardis gras or anywhere else.  How can you not be smiling and having fun if you're wearing beads?

Pride parade
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pride parades for the LGBT community (also known as pride marches, gay pride parades, LGBT pride parades, pride events and pride festivals) are events celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) culture. The events also at times serve as demonstrations for legal rights such as same-sex marriage. Most pride events occur annually and many take place around June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, a pivotal moment in the modern LGBT rights movement.
