Don't quite understand.. I have been visiting USA only two times but on both my trips I saw people driving without helmet on.
Legal or not, doesent matter. It's dangerous and uncomfortable as :-[.
Wonder how people think.

Wtf. Use proper protection! Driving without it is NOT cool.
If you gets injured for life and sits there in your wheelchair and not able to speak then. How "cool" is that?

The smart riders wear the helmets. Just avoid the states without helmet laws. NJ has a helmet law. Pennsylvania, where i work, doesn't. Regardless, I always wear one, unless I have a passenger (in PA) where I give them my helmet to wear.
I always felt that if you are single -- no spouse, or girl/boyfriend and have no close relative who will be made into a accident caretaker should you crash and are paralyzed, in a coma, etc -- then take your chances. I like walking normally, having all my teeth, speaking, and living a life without deformity. The risk don't seem to be worth it.

I know what youre saying, we dont have any choice anyway cos helmets are mandatory everywhere here. I only ride a 50cc mostly and even tho i could be killed or injured badly i would take the chance if i could on very short local trips to the store etc of 1-3 miles. True i could crash there too, and most accidents seem to happen near to home they say, but i would still chance it i think if it was a real nice day.
I could be hit by a bus crossing the road but i still cross. I guess its about weighing up the risks and deciding if its worth it to you. On longer journeys or in busy town traffic i always wear armoured leathers, gloves and a full face helmet. That jacket helped when i came off in the wet last yr, just slid down the road on my back, got up with a sore knee from the initial fall but zero injuries from sliding.
Common sense goes a long way tho. Still cant believe Indian Larry wiped out and died from a minor fall at low speed :(

In my two scooter accidents, I found my head will hit the ground regardless how one falls.
Apparently just because a Harley is so heavy, it must offer the security of an automobile.
Yet the accident we passed where the deer collided with the Harley or vice versa. The guy
and his wife looked to be in bad shape.

not sure if it still holds up by lay but in the old days if you were a seik.you dont/cant have to where a helmet as your turban has to be in contact of your head. so they get away from the helmet law
so if you want to ride without a helmet .....wrap a towle round your head.

my wife works in a dr office and she tells me all the time about guys and girls not wearing a helmit and if they live threw it there face and head is no good to the reast of there body.............

Like wolf said, depends on the state. My state does. I'd wear one even if it didn't though. I go the extra step and wear a full face helmet. I like to joke that bugs, rain, and asphalt hurt my face :D ;D

The Amish and Sikh are exempt in the USA from helmet laws. Amish don't have to adhere to local bicycle helmet laws.

They have a summer event here at my local water park called Bubbalympics. Only people over 275 lbs. I thought about entering this year :D. It's free for friends and family of contestants to come into the park. I'm about 6'3 with a large build and right at 275. I'm not gonna lie, I do have a slight beer belly too ;D. Not like some of the fat f%%ks over here though :D

I'm aiming for 177 by the end of September to get to my ideal weight. Diet and exercise is the real key. Since I've been scooting I bike and walk less, but with the Fall coming better weather will be around for.

From what i see on tv and read in arcticles etc the main problem seems to be the size of servings over there. I know a few folk who visit the states on holiday every year and they all say it is unbelievable how huge meals are in all restaurants or food stores. What you guys are served for one person is what we would have for 2-4 people here. One of those huge Mcdonalds coke drinks contains more coke than probably than an average European will drink in a whole day, maybe even 2 days :o
Another thing i see is that the cost of eating out or eating take-away food makes it attractive to do that almost every night there and many people rarely or never cook much from scratch using raw materials to make a homemade meal now there. This seems to ne based on cost but also the fact that you seem to all lead a pretty hectic lifestyle and have little freetime to spend cooking anyway so its easier just to grab a pizza or burger etc somewhere on the way home from work or on the way to work. You all need to work less and spend more time relaxing at home with the family doing stuff or at least cooking healthier food instead of always chasing those dollars. That moneys no good if you spend it all later on medical bills or die at 60 of obesity related disease. Oh, and btw the UK is cat himg up fast cos many here now seem to be becoming just like you. Its a timebomb. Fu©k that lifestyle, its not for me. If i wobbled when i walked or got a spare tyre i will do something about it asap before it got outta hand.
I had a conversation with someone last year on Facebook who couldnt understand what was wrong with a junior school serving pizza to kids at a school breakfast club!!! Pizza is NOT a breakfast food, at least not unless your a college student waking up with a hangover on a sunday morning :D

I cook food everyday. Eat breakfast at home (usually vegetables, fruit, rice) Pack my lunch in a tupperware and bring to the office. On the way home, I pass by the store, buy some fresh produce, veges, fowl, etc. and cook again when I reach home. I cook more during Sundays. Pizzas and burgers are only for emergencies. My American friends here also love to cook maybe because life's pace here is slower compared to the States and you can really manage time easily.

Not to come down on my country but sometimes its best not to follow the crowds or the trends. I agree with Vivo -- healthy eating never hurts. I'm glad there's a farmers' market in my town on saturdays, and my wife grows a lot of vegetables.

I almost always wear a helmet especially since being in a very nasty cycle/car head-on incident many years ago but still think that the rider should have the choice. In Florida as long as you are not a minor and have a certain amount of medical insurance you are free to ride without a helmet.
If they (government/authorities) decide that you MUST wear a helmet because it's safer, what is to keep them from outlawing scooters/cycles once we reach the point that cars are just as economical and deciding that you MUST ride in an enclosed vehicle because it's safer?

I agree. Cars are already more economical than motorcycles/scooters as far as exhaust pollution goes. The exhaust pollution levels are much higher with motorcycles/scooters.

Gas milage is better on most scooters, and 2 strokes tend to pollute more than 4. Riding a car or scooter is not a right, but a privilege. You are licensed by the state to operate a vehicle. Because the state issues the license they are some what responsible for insuring the safety of their licensed riders, that's why there are mandatory seatbelt laws, and because they save lives. They same is true for helmets.
I have no illusions that once I throw my leg over the seat of my bike I'm willfully engaged in something dangerous, many more times than driving a car. There are no seat-belts or air bags. It's even more dangerous -- in terms of limiting injury, if you don't wear a helmet. That's why I took a safety class, surf riding forums and want to have the Roadcraft category added to this site.
Their may be upgrades to motorcycle and scooter engines to lower their emissions, and who knows all vehicles may eventually go electrical in the future. What you're suggesting is pretty doubtful -- the government banning scooters because of their emission standards or lack of safety. Scooters are more numerous in Europe and Asian than in the US and there isn't a move to ban them there.

Yes! once you've experienced a bad accident, you'll never forget to wear a helmet... I ALWAYS wear my helmet not because of the law but because I want to protect my head. Period.

There are 2 scratches on my helmet. I never clean them off. And it was a 2 mph fall.

W#hen I started riding scooters back in 56 I think, I was always told to wear a helmet. 54 years later I was checking out my ET4 for a trip from Utah to TN to see my brother. To check the load I road around the block and the scoot was handling great. I was near the highway and was thinking that I should go back to get my helmet. But I said to myself is just a short ways down the road and come back home. At 55mph the scoot ran great and as I was coming home I lost control of my scooter. I was told at the hospital after I came to 7 hours later and surgery that I should be dead.
The left cheek bones are replaced with steel plates. My eye was removed to clean the rocks behind it and then replaced. took two weeks before the eye began to open. Now I am home with every bone in my body hurting and don't forgrt about the head aches that keep you awake at night.
No trip for me this year. I will always have reminder to wear my helmet. I was only 1/4 miles from my house.

Over the weekend my wife and I went to North East PA for my Goddaughter's 7th Birthday. A motorcycle rider and passengers were hit and killed in Scranton, PA by a hit and run driver who was later captured. The news never mentioned if they were wearing helmets or not.
Since PA doesn't have a helmet law, I wondered if they were wearing head gear and if it would have made a difference. Always sad to hear something so tragic, especially since the driver of the car had several warrants out against him for drug possession.

I wear a helmet most of the time but not always. I know how bad it can be but I want the choice to be my own. South Carolina is a strong pro-helmet choice state. Most people around the coast rarely wear a helmet. It's funny that I would never ride my Mt. Bike without one but in the summer I go out on my scoot or motorcycle without. It's not uncommon to see girls in 2 piece bathing suits with flip-flops on riding big Harleys up and down the highways.
This is the averaged way most people in SC dress for a ride.

When I was 14 I crashed on my brand new 10-speed bike. This was before the age of bike helmets. Found out the hard way that my pedal had a defective weld in it. It fell off on a downstroke. I hit the pavement going down hill doing abut 30 MPH. Cracked skull, major concussion and 3rd degree roadburns on my right shoulder, elbow, knee and on all the knuckles of both hands. I still have the scars/burns to this day.
That was just from riding a 30 + pound bike. I can't imagine crashing on something that weighs as much or heavier than the rider. Heheh -- You got some crazy people down in SC :o
