Some folks use an impact wrench. I use a clutch holding tool and a 14mm socket on a 12-inch breaker bar.

If you live in the US Harbor Freight is a good place to get their $40 1/2 inch electric impact wrench. It goes on sale all the time and I have used mine for 2 years without issue. Good for taking the variator nut off also.

Yup as Wass says.

I use an impact wrench myself cos i just find that easier. If you buy a holding too then i would try find one that does the variator too if poss, otherwise you will need to buy another different tool to remove the variator nut later once you get tuning.

You WILL save money in the long run so its well worth buying something. With the money you save from doing just one service yourself then that will pay for the tool/wrench.

You may need a 14mm for the clutch bell nut, i got a couple of skts in my wrench box, one fitted the variator nut but i didnt have one that fit the clutch nut so i just used a normal socket on it. Know its meant to be an impact socket used but its been fine so far and i mustve had it off at least 20x so far with no problem. If the socket shatters then i will just need to "borrow" another from work  ;)

Remember to put some locktight on the threads whenever you refit the clutch or variator nut cos you dont want it spinning off at 9000rpm  :o

Both Crossbolts and Blues ideas/tools will work but i found they did not work for the 1st time i had to remove mine. After i j
Had taken the nuts off that 1st time then i could use these tools but for me they would not work. Neither would any of the other methods shown on youtube etc using spanners etc to jam the variator, it was just far too stiff and i didnt want to damage the clutch bell or the variator :-\

Yours may well be looser tho than mine was, i dont know?

A good kick usually works for me. I dont have a rat. Well apart from my boss but i wont invite him to my home.

The impact will def get it off.

Unless its welded on  ;D

...i made this...welded the fasteners so that they have a little free play...

..the heads fit in the oem bell nicely..

..the threaded ends fit into every other bell i've come across..

..it was originally one piece, then i cut it, and welded locating tabs on two sides, and a pin inside the tubing..

..it's more compact this way, and is still stable when in use...

Here's a Pict of me, and some thing I made. I don't remember what it did or why I made it... Your tool reminded me of my early years on the Island.

lol as nice as it is to see everyones tool. i have no welder or any form of manufacturing one. had hoped ther was a poor mans way to do it. like a spanner aganst the variator gear to undo the nut. which works great for  mine lol. but for the clitch bell nut.
thanks everone for the help though.
