Title: New Kymco Owner - Need Help!!
Post by: wiziwig76 on August 12, 2012, 01:30:13 AM
Hi - new to the forum and first time Kymco owner.  I just bought a used 2010 Kymco Mongoose 90 for my son who is a first time ATV rider - what a great little machine!  Here's where I need some help...I want to limit the speed for awhile until he gets used to riding.  So I hopped on by myself (only 150 lbs) and ripped across the yard.  Way too fast for him so I adjusted the speed limiter screw down as tight as it would go just to see the minimum speed.  I took off again and went just as fast as before.  The screw was the whole way in!  I need to make sure he is safe, so can't let him on by himself until I figure this out.  Could the throttle cable need adjusting?  Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks

..well, welcome to the forum!!

                  ;D

..it's funny, because most people that find their way here are looking for mods that speed their rides up...

The screw you turned wasn't a speed limiter. Re set that where it was I would assume. The easiest way to do what you want is to Slacken the throttle cable at the adjuster(s). You can reduce the applied throttle, and leave the engine alone.

There is another way that involves opening the cvt/var. You could buy an OEM re stricter washer and install that. The bike will be just as quick as it is now just about 10-15% lower top speed. There are loads of utube links for variator work.

You could also fit a slightly shorter belt but Zombies idea seems a whole lot easier, and cheaper.

Try fabricating an intake manifold gasket with a smaller hole.

We'll have you at 2-3mph in NO Time... All good ideas.

I figured I would catch some slack for trying to slow it down...I will start with zombie's idea with the throttle cable.  The manual is telling me that the screw is meant to slow the speed of the machine by limiting the throttle - i.e. it limits how far the thumb throttle can be depressed.  I'll start here and see if it helps.  Thanks for all replies.
