Title: Anybody with a Xciting500Ri?
Post by: Stephan on May 28, 2009, 08:03:34 PM
I have severe buffeting problems with my helmet on the highway above 60 MPH with my Xciting 500.

If those of you that have the Xciting 500Ri with the much smaller(tinted) windscreen
could tell me how the buffeting is at highway speeds I would appreciate it very much.

If the smaller windscreed lets the helmet in free airflow, it would be much better,
if I stand up letting the helmet in free airflow, it's quite acceptable on my bike.

BTW - the smaller tinted screen is coool!  8)

Did you try to mount the stock windscreen in the lower position?
Works with my X500.

I jacked my screen up by putting small packers under the screws so that it is now at a steeper angle, it did help  the buffetting but its not gone...I am in the process of making up a replacement longer screen to take the flow over the head.

Didn't know there was a lower position, nothing in the manual  ???

Do you have any pictures to share?

I think there are two ways to go, either helmet in "free air" with a lower windscreen
or full protection with highter windscreen or laminar lip installed.

Any ideas are welcome!

Spoke to the Kymco shop about the Ri-windscreen as a spare part today,
400 USD, OUCH!

Think I have to find a cheaper solition.

Does anybody have a spare Ri-windscreen for sale?

Now I see...  I asked in your other post if that was the stock windscreen because all I have seen is the Ri model with the short one.  I have an Ri with the Givi tall windscreen.  It is tall and at about 80 MPH out on the freeway there is no buffeting or turbulence.  I don't know about the short windscreen since I had the Givi put on it at the dealer when I purchased the bike new.  I am looking through the Givi it's pretty tall.  But gives great wind and rain protection.

Where are you located?

I live in the Northern part of Europe - Sweden.

Got an answer from a US dealer, 144 USD + 30% customs and VAT + shipping to Europe.

Still need to know about buffeting issue with the smaller screen...

I have the same problem as you.  If I tape my face sheild at a 45 degree angle, then the air flow is better.  I tried using a spacer under the windscreen, but it didnt help me much.  So, I have ordered the
Givi windscreen .  This is really the only complaint I have about the x500 up this point.

First picture shows the lower position on my X500:

This the upper position (4th picture):

You see the difference in (not) showing the little grid between windscreen and head light (I think the horn is behind there).
It's not difficult, just some screwing (2x4 screws if I remember correctly, 15min).

Thank you Thomas, I really see the difference between the lower and upper position.

Did you do any drilling or did you just change position?

And the most important question, any buffeting above 100 Km/h(60 mph)?

BTW - Nice pictures!

I have a xciting 500Ri I have the small tinted windscreen and I know what you mean Decided to try a different helmet i got the joe rocket carbon it is a very light and has great air flow but i still feel the turbulence

nhbill - Does the turbulence decrease if you stand up?

If so, the smaller windscreen is not the solution...

I'm six foot and the Laminar Lip got rid of almost all the buffeting on my 2009 XC500Ri.

jrd4849 - Thats good news, I have been considering the Laminar Lip as well,
but had not found any confessions regarding Laminar Lip on the Xciting 500.

If you got rid of the buffeting with your Xciting 500Ri, it would probably work on
my Xciting 500 with the taller windscreen.

Do you have any pictures?

I replaced the stock windshield with a tall Givi. Great for blocking the wind. However, living in central Texas. I think i may go back to the stock windshield during the hot summer.

Oskar - Is it the windscreen or turbulence around you helmet
that makes the vibration sounds?

Seems like the solution not is the smaller windscreen either...

Maybe the Laminar Lip on my higher windscreen is the way to go,
I'll start a new thread about Laminar Lip to see if there is any
experiences to be shared.

BTW, I saw a police motorbike today, with the Laminar Lip installed,
don't think the install things unless they are proved to work.

But the tinted windscreen is still cool 8)

no its not my helmet, the "plastic" vibrations only noice at certain revs and speeds at around 50 kph.. and its for sure from the plastic around the windshield cos it doesnt make noice when driving whitout it..

Hey Tumbleweed, you might try installing a vent in the windshield.  When it's hot you just open the vent and get a breeze.  I put one in the Goldwing cause the windshield I have on it is so big it gets really warm in the summer, the vent solved the problem.  Best of both...  ;D   I had them put the tall Givi on the X500 when I bought it.  I still get enough air around it that I don't get hot when you can keep moving.  It's the city traffic where I get hot.  Today started out wet and stormy and ended hot and very humid.  Just being outside and you were wet after a little bit.  It felt good when I got out of the traffic and got to moving.  It was a long day, the ride home and a short ride after dinner was good therapy.  I feel better now...
