Hello Kymco owners! I bought a 1-yr old Kymco 50 2 stroke a week ago. It has about 1550 miles on it currently. I use it to ride to work - about 4 miles. I love it, but I would really like to derestrict it as it tops out at 30 MPH on a flat, 25 MPH going uphill, 35 MPH going downhill (give or take 2MPH on each). I know it has more potential than that and honestly, the drivers whipping by me scare me to death. (I ride on a 35-40 MPH road that has a big hill.)
I don't know anything about the mechanics of scooters, but I'm ready to learn! Can anyone offer a step-by-step process to derestrict my scooter? I am open to modifying the parts as well if you have specific recommendations (please post links if possible.) I've heard and read conflicting information on modifying, so I really don't know where to start. I don't want to ruin the engine, but I would like to get the scooter MPH up to at least 45.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks! :)

First things first. The variator drive boss needs to be replaced with a derestricted one. Here is the best place to order the part as well as a diagram of the variator. Item 100 is what you want. Make sure you call to order. Tell them you want the derestricted boss and mention the forum for a discount.

You'll also want to change the main jet. They put tiny jets in these newer models. About an 80 is what you want. You should get a solid 40 mph(flat ground speed) after the new boss and jet.
You may read that the CDI has a rev limiter. It doesn't on newer models, but I'm beginning to believe the higher RPM timing curve is different. Either way wouldn't worry to much about that at the moment.
Again these newer models are very restricted. If you really want to open it up consider an aftermarket exhaust... and even better a big bore kit to go along with it. Exhaust should get you up around 45 mph or even 50 with a little CVT tuning. With the BBK you can expect 55+, again with CVT tuning.
P.S. A BBK will give you huge torque and acceleration gains. No more struggling up hills ;D

Welcome to the forum BTW :)

Three best sources you have are Google, Youtube and this forum. All recent 50cc scooters work pretty much the same so go watch some videos of scooter CVT transmissions on youtube. You'll find out it's not that complicated. I do recommend buying an electric impact wrench from harbor freight. They are perfect for removing the pulley nuts. Not too much torque to break expensive things.
Let us know if/when you have anymore questions :)

Thank you, Peters & Juice (get your mind out of the gutter ;)) for the information! I really appreciate the feedback.
