Title: Smoking And Smokeless Tobacco.
Post by: mopedred on August 02, 2012, 03:32:52 AM
I been smoking ever since I turned 18 I am in my 30's now. It's kinda funny because
during most of my time smoking I never tried smokeless tobacco not even once.
My dad smoked so when I turned 18 I started smoking. His dad, my grandpa, chewed and so my
dad smoked and chewed but started way before the age of 18 though. I have a memory from
when I was a kid fishing with my dad. He would take others out in his boat so they could fish.
This guy who dipped was fishing with my dad and me. I remember opening his can of dip thinking
it was a can of worms. So there I was with my fingers all in this man's can of dip looking for worms.
I said to my dad "where are the worms". I did not even know what it was.
Anyway I do not want to smoke anymore so recently I been trying dip pouches. Right now I have
a roll of Grizzly Wintergreen pouches. They just don't seem as addicting as cigarettes. With cigarettes
I am smoking as soon as I get up to when I go to bed. With dip I used 4 pouches yesterday and 3
today. What do you guys think "is smoking more addictive than smokeless tobacco". I did notice when
I previously started smokking again after I started dip I did smoke more. Hopefuly I can stay off
cigarettes this time. I do enjoy nicotine.

Mopedred,

Congrats on trying to quit, and if the smokeless pouches helps you get there, then I say go for it, just don't get addicted to the stuff and end up trading it for cigarettes. As the others have posted both are pretty horrible (cigarettes and smokeless), though I imagine cancer of the jaw, throat and/or tongue can be pretty gruesome.

I wish smoking and chewing tobacco tasted like turds smell.  That way I would never have started.

My latest run of quiting smoking has been 4.5 solid years.  With the money I saved, I bought a scooter and a new tractor.  :-)

I quite smoking 3 years ago using ecigarettes, and so have many of my friends. The exaggerated stories of "exploding ecigs" have been just that, and probably by big tobacco. Like any electronic device you have to use the right charger and accessories. The instances of these exploding (as much as a battery can explode) are from cheap cheap CHEAP crap models people buy for $5 direct from china or home made "mods" with ridiculously huge batteries. Or buy one from a gas station and try to charge it with a charger from a completely different model purchased at a different gas station. Really the technology is no different from a flashlight, except the filament heats a liquid and turns it to vapor. How many times has a flashlight exploded in your hands??? I personally use only Joyetech products and US made eliquid. No smoke. No tobacco. No carcinogens. It's far less harmful, if they're even harmful at all.

That's my 2¢

I smoked since i was about 14-15, im 40 now and hope to quit (again) tomorrow or once what i got is finished.

I always found the best way is just to go cold turkey and not touch it at all. I stopped smoking at work over 12yrs ago when i had a job in a mine so we couldnt smoke while underground for safety reasons. Lots of guys stuck homemade flavoures tobacco under their bottom lip while at work and i did try it once but it burns the hell out of your mouth i found so i didnt take that up. They all said you got used to it and the burn went away but it wasnt for me, especially after seeing photos of folk with mouh cancer from it.
I did go thro a few months of using menthol tobacco snuff which i admit i did kinda get a liking for but i also quit that cos i felt it prob did more harm than the cigs did, it was nice tho at the time i thought.

Now i only smoke at night and roll my own "special blend" (if you know what i mean  ;) ) but im at the age now i want to stop it all so plan on stopping by tomorrow for at least a while. I wont say i will never smoke again but i dont plan on doing it regularly ever again.

I always find the 1st 2 wks are the worst, get to week 3 and its all in the mind after that. I just take it one day at a time or even 1hr at a time if i need to. It is hard but the benefits of not inhaling poison, even if it is good, is well worth the effort.

Im gonna be a bitch to live with the next few weeks........ :D

Meant to add, my wife used one of those e-cigs and said it was good, helped her quit a few months ago. I just prefer going straight off it, i cant cut down, i just need to stop altogether or i end up back where i started.

I have a grizzly wintergreen pouch in now. I have to confess I've been smoking for the
last few days. I gone though half a carton now I want to quit again. Smoking is now effecting
my body physically. I just don't want tar in my lungs anymore or my heart rate and blood
pressure go up because I smoke. I hope you can quit. Dip is the only thing keeping me from
smoking. Plus a roll of dip will last me longer than a carton of cigs and it is cheaper.

Most states now have free nicotine patches thru the health dept. You may want to look into that as an option. It was all part of the tobacco company settlement some years ago. It's just now being implemented in most of the US.

Well im now coming up for 36hrs without a smoke of any kind  :)

Normally im fine for 2-3 days till my body reserves of nicotine and chemicals run out then the cravings kick in for me.
If i can get thro this 1st weekend i should be ok, at least for a while. I firmly believe that saying "once a smoker, always a smoker", i knkw guys who quite 15-20 yrs ago who still get cravings even now. I just treat it like any other addiction or think of it like being an alcoholic. One day at a time..........

Thing is that i just settled an insurance claim so im waiting for a cheque arriving any day now, i feel the need to go celebrate which is always a bad idea.........

My name is Streido, and im an addict  :D

At least you didnt just throw in the towel and have quit again, thats the main thing. I wont ever saw i will never smoke ever again cos i know i will at some point but hopefully it will just be a one day relapse now and again, i dont ever want to go back to doing it every day now.

I worked out i spend about £180-£200 per month so realise i could use that cash for better things, thats whats been helping me this time. I really dont want to burn up that kind of cash every month, no matter how nice it is at the time. I could pay a 2nd mortgage on a small flat for that kind of cash!

If you got an android smartphone look for Quitnow app, it logs how much you spent and keeps a running total, also shows how your health improves every day too.

I totally expect to buy a 10 pack next time i go out with my mates, if i dont then great but if i do its no biggie as long as i dont smoke the next day.

Im 1 day & 20hrs now, saved just under £16 so far  ;D

Prob keep away from this thread in a day or so as the weekend approaches cos i guarentee i WILL want a smoke over the weekend so i need to try keep my mind off it.

I agree 100% with that song, well the cigarettes bit anyway for sure, but just dont want to waste that kinda cash on it. It has nothing to do with health for me cos i totally believe its all genetic or in your head as to whether you end up with cancer etc, look at all the old folk who smoked for decades and outlived non-smokers by 10, 20 or even 30+ yrs. My own Gramps smoked from about 12 yrs old, filterless or self rolled, no poncey filter tips, and he lived in to his late 80's with zero serious health problems his whole life.

Its purely financial for me, if they gave away free smokes i would never quit, but they dont, so i have  :)

............at least till this weekend anyhow  ;D

Smokes are about £6.50. ($10-$11) per 20 pack, that not the problem, it all the "accessories" that add the cost. I do not smoke regular cigs anymore, stopped that about 12-14yrs ago after my 3rd collapsed lung (no im not joking, that sh** did happen). Only been smoking special blend roll your own since then. Works out at about £23 for cigs, £1 for papers, and £30-£45 for the other per week depending on who has it and how good that sh** is. Comes to roughly £200 ($310) per month on average tho on holidays or if a bro need a bung then it can be more  :o

I could go back to regular plain cigs but wheres the fun in that? I'd sooner just quit  :)

Fu©king Fridays here now, weekend starts here, this is when it gets more difficult. All the excuses start up "Man i've worked all week,  i deserve to chill over the weekend" etc. Problem is i dont know anyone who sells small weekend amounts so i end up with an Oz of sh** and come Monday i just carry on blazin it up all week, then it ends up going round and round again......

Nah, this is it, im going full cold turkey and beating this sh** right now. Need a few months off before i can even condsider a small relapse  ;D

Thinkin of puttin away the cash i would spend towards an island home in the sun, that way i got a good reason to keep going.

Got a can of dip in my pocket but the first place I went on my new a50 was to the store to buy
a pack of cigarettes. At the Murphy USA I can buy a pack of Pall Mall for $3.01 a pack. I live in
NC and Tobacco tax is not so bad here. They wanted to put a $1.00 tax increase a pack but they
never did. NC is a Tobacco state.

I've sent a few NC cartons up north in my time here.
Quitting "Premium smoke has never been an issue for me. It's the one you get at the store that kick my ass. Between the two I spend about 700.00 month. I know. It's a mortgage payment... I like renting. My dogs/cats will tell you that.

Yeah Vivo thats cos the UK and US owner tobacco corps realise the Western market is drying up nowadays so they need a new customer base. I lived in Africa for a while in the late 90's and it was the exact same there. Theyre like crack dealers, offer it cheap or basically free, get the suckers hooked then raise the prices....... >:(

I tried rolling tobacco, Drum and G.Virginia, but just couldnt get to enjoy it, made me want to not smoke  :D

Went from B&H, thro a phase of Woodbine and Senior Service (Dont even ask, we thought we we're cool ok), Marlboro then settled on Berkley Menthols for a while  ::)

Once i quit regular smokes i still used the Menthols in my doobs just cos i was used to them and it was too confusing to get my brain to tell my mouth to ask for a different kind.

4 days 21 hrs and counting now with zero smokables so far. Funny thing is im not that bothered this time for some reason  :-\ Usually im climbing the walls, cant sleep and strangling the wife by now  :D

Thought about calling a man earlier cos i had lots to do today and thought i maybe could use a smoke but i just had a bowl of chilli and some doughnuts instead. I may end up a fat bastard soon  :D

I tried patches myself years ago but had to rip it off cos it felt like it was burning my skin  :o

Got a script for Nicorette gum after that and they helped, i think. Couldnt be arsed going to the doc this time to get another script for more gum this time so just went cold turkey. Takes a week of not smoking for all the nicotine to get out the body so im past that now, just will power and headgames to play now to keep off it.

Oh, and the 3-6 months to get all the remains of doobage out my system but thats not addictive like nicotine, more like addictive like chocolate  :)

Ordered a set of pocket scales off ebay tonight for weighing variator rollers and all i was thinking was "They would be great for checking the weight of my next bag of grass"  :D

Still been ok tho, managing to keep busy to keep my mind (and fingers) occupied on scooter related things and away from smoking.............so far at least.

Yes they are, £2.99 delivered!

What? do you mean you can be charged over there for owning a set of scales now ??? Thats just plain ridiculous ???

I mean i can see the point if theyre covered in coke or weed but if its for a genuine reason whats wrong with that? Its getting more like Minority Report every day  :-\

Not an issue here anyway, even if it was for drugs (which it is def not for). Hete you can own and carry any and all drug use or related equip, bongs, scales, gold plated coke spoon, small bags, even seeds, hydroponic growing sets and any and all related items are fine, its just the actual drugs which get you in trouble, anything else is fine.

Like i say tho, i dont smoke ANYTHING now, 9 days now of zero smoking tobacco or weed. The scales are 1000% to che k my roller weights of the stack of mixed rollers in my garage drawer. The cops are welcome to come watch me weigh them if they want.

The scales by themselves are fine but if they find illegal substances they'll try to slap an attempting to sell or distribute charge on. A good lawyer can get it dropped though.

Well thats ok then, sounds reasonable if you got Oz's of sh** and scales, same thing would happen here. If you want to deal you knkw the risks so its up to you to chance it or not.

Like i said tho they could send these ones for any forensic test they liked and it would come back 100% clear cos all i want them for arerollers. I couldve just borrowed a set of any of the half dozen or so folk i know who have them for NOT weighing rollers but that would open up a whole world of temptation that i do not want to enter. Would be rude really to just go in and ask to use their scales then leave, i would have to be polite and buy some smokable or at the very least i would be passed a joint, so i took the sensible way out and got my own set for legal weighing of legal items.

..........much as i would love a blast of a fat doob.

No worries, mate, you've got a handle on it, just hang on.

You need to overcome the compulsion, and only burn it when it would be a pleasure, not just spark it up because it's 4:20.

Moderation, in all things. So only spark a little toke, wait for it to creep up on ya, then get on to something productive, like cleaning yer scooter, going for a walk, or flogging Molly.

Pretty soon, you won't have none, and it won't bother you, meh, I was tired of that sh** anyway.

And don't forget, never smoke dope when you're high, you don't get no higher, just lower on dope.

Very wise words Ce.

Totally agree but i think im one of those folk who have an addictive personality. When i like something i go for it 10001%, i always think if im going to do something then i may as well do it full on or not at all  :D For me cutting down is not an option, didnt work for cigs, didnt work for weed, didnt even work for spanking my plank. I either do something or i dont. Problem i have is o dont know anyone who sells small amounts anyways so if i wanted to go buy some i have to buy an Oz and then thats me puffing away for the week at least, every night, chain smoking till bed. Tried cutting back or limiting it or even setting rules like none before dinner or none before my shower etc, works for a day or so then............you know how it is  :)

I think of it like being an alcoholic, if i got some in the house i WILL smoke it and i wont stop till its done or its time for bed. Saw some research that said that along with tobacco its one of the hardest things to quit, even tho it is non-addictive as a drug itself. Its just too nice.

Still tempted to call a mate and tap some, just a little for the weekend, but so far i am resisting. Making a big pot of extra hot chilli right now and even thinking of going for a new tatt tomorrow if i can stay off it tonight, my way of kind of rewarding my good behaviour lol.

See how it goes tonight and tomorrow.............. ::)

Cheers for the support tho  8)

Meeeee tooooo!

Marijuana may not be physically addictive but it is addictive. I know. I've gone from smoking an eighth a day to nothing at all several times. Good bud too not that doo doo brown sh**. Like I've heard about quitting cigarettes, the first three days is the worst. You have to want to stop for yourself though. If it's for relationship or legal reasons it will never work.

10 days 18 hours 59 minutes.........and counting  :)

So im past the physical addiction stage Peters. All in the mind now.

Just having my Chilli buzz, looking at a new local tattoo shop online and designing a few ideas. Thinking i may drop in for a chat with the guy tomorrow.

Not going out tonight so im safe........at least till tomorrow  :D

Like i said,  i need to do it one day at a time, even 1 hour at a time or 15mins at a time if it gets bad.

Chilli helps, cravings are fading and keeping busy.

I have so many plans i want to do so need the extra cash i save from not smoking anyway, just need to remind myself of that when it gets bad.

Cheers bro's.

Hijacking threads is what we do  ;D ;)

If you smoked like I did you'll have more cash than you'll know what to do with  ;D

Won't last long though... you'll find other things to spend it on

Carry on, Streido, ain't nothin' to it but to do it.

Ya know, I've got a mate that owns a fishing tackle shop in Whitehaven, south of the border up your way. He quit smoking cigarettes after having a horrendous habit, and one of the best benefits was saving enough money to fly out here to New Mexico twice a year to go hunting and shooting.

We have a Scheutzenfest up in Raton every year dedicated to FALs and L1A1s, we'd ride the scooters up there, but with all the rifles and gear, we run the Land Rover, so we just do a bit of touring closer to home.

He used to be a motorcycle courier in London, so I figured he'd know how to ride, but he went to pull in the clutch, which was the rear brake, and almost launched himself over the handlebars.

It's a scooter, you stupid, soggy old git, a scooter.

But he was alright after that, except when  we  we got up around 9,000 feet, and the altitude almost killed him. Never would have made it if he was still smoking.

I already have many, many plans Peters.Been on a bit of a splurge these last few days buying stuff for the scoots, the cars and afew other things i just never seemed to get around to.

Its amazing how much more time you have to do stuff when you dont need to stop and roll a spliff every half hour or hour and its also less stress having to worry about finding cash for it every week and then running around trying to score a bit between running your life and all the every day sh**.

Craving has passed now anyway, think it was just down to that Friday feeling after finishing work for the week. Im all good now.  ;D

I really feel sorry for all the people that are addicted to tobacco products. I wish I could help get them to quit and add many years to their lives. Just think of all the years they will miss with their families and friends. I don't hate people for smoking, I just wish they would stop.  :-\

I have not had a cigarette in three days. I am still dipping grizzly wintergreen pouches. About 6 pouchesa day that is a can every three days. I just want to quit smoking I do not want smoke
in my lungs anymore. Dipping just does not seem as addicting as smoking. Now I like to ride my
scooter and have a dip in spitting at every stop I come to. Maybe I will try the nicotine patches
when I am ready. I just don't want to go jogging and have a heart attack because I smoke to
much. I want to be in shape, never know when about to get your ass handed to you.

I'm totally smoke-free, 12+ years and counting... my problem now is my humungous consumption of alcohol. My problem is I can finish a whole bottle of rum and still scoot safely at 30mph and walk straight. Why do I drink?... I like the tipsy feeling... and I sleep better....  :-\  Is there an alternative to booze?

lol yep but you quit that 12 years ago. and dont get started on the drug stage. that just messy. start making your own rum. will be twice as strong and you will drink less. ;D

Yup, and I'm not proud about it either. And my liver is normal by the way.... Sometimes I leave around two jiggers in the bottle so that I can say I didn't drink the whole bottle.  Good defense for arguing with somebody... ;D

My father-in-law drank malt whiskey and red wine every day almost for decades, my wife and her mum always had a go at him "youre drinking way too much Bill, you need to cut back, you will destroy your liver". He had a full in-depth medical at 65 and the doc said he was doing great and to just carry on doing whatever he was doing cos it obviously worked for him. He went home a poured a large Scotch, wife never mentioned it again :D

Every member of my family drank except my father. They all died old.(80+). I quit drinking about 2 years ago because I get intense pain in my liver from it. A few beers once in a blue moon, or two-3 drinks w/ dinner but no more.
A full bottle would put me in a coma.
