Title: Types of metals project
Post by: Peters on July 19, 2012, 04:43:24 AM
I have a final project I'm doing for an engineering materials class that's due Monday. Last day of class thank god. Figured there are some pretty smart fellers on here. Fart smellers too  :D. Sorry... Enough  ;D.

Anyway we need 35 different samples of different types of metals to mount to a project board. So far we have most of the basics (Steel, copper, brass, aluminum, cast iron, iridium, platinum, silver, carbide).

So, I need to come up with some more. I have a few ideas like piston rings which I read are a hardened, fine-grained cast iron. An old wrist pin which I read most of the time is a hardened mild steel. I have an old clutch disc which I'm pretty sure is a cermet (metal/ceramic). A broken mirror stem which is chrome (chromium) plated.

I have all kinds of parts and tools in my dads building, but I'm just having trouble finding other kinds of metals. I'm also planning a trip to the hardware and home improvement stores to see what I can find. If you guys have any ideas or suggestions for me it would be very helpful. Thanks  :)

pure metals or compounds/alloys?

Lead - a bullet or soldering lead

Zinc  -  roofing panels (galvanized roof), U.S. pennies, dry cell battery

Tin  -  canned goods

Magnesium  -  you can chip a piece from a magwheel.

Pewter  -  household ornaments

Molybdenum - some pistons/piston rings or the filament support of a light bulb.

Chromium - some piston rings also.

Vanadium - wrenches/tools

Mercury - your old school thermometer

Silver - you can buy cheap silver jewelry.

Tungsten  - also used for bulb filament.

Platinum - spark plug tip or jewelry

Iridium  - spark plug tip

Titanium - some use in eyeglass frames and other jewelry

Nickel and Cadmium   -  NiCad rechargeable battery

Gold   -    ;)

You can also use different kinds of coins.

Hope this helps.   :)

Heavy Metal, maybe take in an AC/DC album and nail it to the board?  :)

You can get tungsten from tig welder tips.

Don't think they have to be pure. Would be better but damn, kinda hard and expensive to find some pure metals. Alloys or composites are good.

ok alloys...

1. Babbit metal  (tin, antimony, copper)    -   babbit bearings

2. Monel (copper, iron)    -  corrosion resistant containers, rust proof staple wires

3. Nichrome (nickel, chromium) - heating element of toasters

4. Bell metal (copper, tin)  -   casting of bells

5. Phosphor bronze (bronze with phosphorous)  -  electrical spring

6. Type metal (antimony, tin)    - used to make type for printing.

7. Sterling Silver (silver, copper, lead) - jewelry and art objects.

Hope this helps  ;)

Carbon is metal too so grafyt has to be    sorta
If you mix carbon, and graphite you get a toaster or a bed frame.

There ya got Pete's!!! Toaster... That's the metal you need. No one else would even think of it! It will get you a 100 or gold star or whatever they give you in school now. Who's your bestest buddy...

Just bring a lap top, and show him Vivo's chart thing. Tell the teacher it has ALL the metal on it. Then you can show him a slide show of real metal like TOASTERS! for extra credit! Not that mumbo jumbo metal like they have where Vivo lives. AntimoAney, and sh**.

Peters! if you're near I can lend you my knife collection.... ;D

I have steel!....

Randall knives use 440B (carbon, manganese, chromium)

Buck knives uses ATD34 (also carbon, manganese, chromium but with different percentages)

Cheap good knives use Carbon 420..

Spyderco knives uses S30V (Carbon, Chromium, Moly, Vanadium)

You have some knives? Some knives have the steel type stamped on the heel or bolster of the blade like "Carbon 420" or just "420" but....  can you bring them to school?  ::)

Or better yet, bring your scoot in the classroom and show them all the different metals on it...

steel, stainless steel, braided steel, rusty steel, aluminum, cast iron, forged iron, chromium piston rings, nickel plating, and your metallica stickers!!.....

ah... don't forget the toaster!!!!

and the bong!!!

Hey guys this is a scooter forum. We're not allowed to have fun on here. The noise to signal ratio is to great.  :D :D :D What a douchey way of saying "I'm no fun". And why even say you're leaving the forum. If you don't like kymco, you don't like to have fun, and you take things way to seriously f'in leave then. Don't make a scene for attention. Rum is like 20% sugar dude!

I know, it's made from sugar cane.! Our country produces sugar....

From the net: There is not a lot of sugar in rum, but there is no set level. A good rule is the higher the proof - the lower the level of sugar. If you have 160 proof, there is little or no sugar.

That's why I drink only 100+ proof!!! Extra Strong!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
