Title: What is the "collar" in the trans?
Post by: donut on July 13, 2012, 03:33:40 AM
Yet another newb question.
I took the '01 ZX into the scoot shop...

Scoot shop owner took it for a spin to give me his opinion...as I have never ridden a "good" or any ZX... just Peoples and the ZX seemed "clunky" to say the least.
He schooled me the apples and oranges between the ZX and People... stated the ZX (stock of course) is a slower start off the line...
but he thought the transmission might be off...and
Had a leak coming from the carb ...

so I agreed to an hour labor to reconnect the carb nipple and check the trans...
he discovered the "collar' was the wrong part/size (meant for a People, etc but not the ZX) and he replaced it...

whew, so hopefully this makes sense as I have explained what I remember but now would someone school me please as to what the collar is and what it does?

thank you in advance for your patience...

I believe he meant the drive boss. The ZX takes a shorter boss by 4mm. It's a 34mm boss

...i did not know that...

               8)

..that explains why my buds zx shows only about 4/5 of belt travel on the variator...

..i bet itsa 38mm, smooth gy6 boss....

Have him cut it to 34mm, and he will get an extra 5mph. Otherwise he has to get the OEM boss from Stadium, or a Nakaru from Racing Planet. I bought 4 nakaru's, and Know they are correct.

Cool  :)

I'll check the length next time I'm in there

It's the one that came with the Malossi multivar

Naraku makes a shim washer kit if you are too short. It really is meant to get wide enough so the belt rests on the drive boss.

Right

My concern is that it's too long. I understand that causes problems too.

I've found the restriction on the torque driver. I was wondering, if I ordered one from Stadium would it be restricted too?

YES it would be restricted unless you specified an after market. The best test is still marking the var, and TD to see how far it all travels. Then figure why/where...

The Agility 50 has an un restricted TD you can use. Same for the ZX 50. Both have the same drive, and they will swap out for the people.

Sorry to hijack, but I needed to ask zombie if he knows if the Like 50 2t has a restricted torque driver? I wouldn't know what to look for in the CVT if so...

You have to look inside the rear pulleys. They should taper all the way in till they touch. If they are restricted there is a HUMP on the smallest part of the pulley where the 1/2's meet. Slinger may know about the People or Aeromyst for sure knows.

It likely does

Here's the pic of mine

See that little ridge down inside the pulley. You have to pull/push the two sides apart to see it.

I'm spending more than I'm making. We've had rain scattered all day every day for two weeks straight. It's hard to paint in this weather.

I hear ya

I looked at my year to date income on my pay stub today. About $4200  :o Truly pathetic. I'm so glad I'm in school  :).

Of course I may or may not have some of my income coming under the table  ;). 4200 is only what uncle sam knows about  ;D

The Like does indeed have a restricted rear pulley. It looks exactly like the pic Peters posted (thank you for the pic!)

..all things considered, that pulley change gives you @ 5mph...
