Title: And so it begins.....
Post by: Southpaw32 on July 03, 2012, 11:18:16 PM
I've had my 2008 People 50 2T since December, and have been riding it a lot this spring and summer.
I'm very happy with the scooter, but have decided I'd like a little more "umph" from a stop and on hills, so I'm going to jump into some upgrades.

I'm planning on doing an exhaust upgrade.
I've been trying to read up on the forum on what all I need/need to do, but jumping from thread to thread can get a little confusing. So, a little help/guidance would be nice.

Here is what i'm planning on ordering...
Leo Vince exhaust (yes, I know the technigas is preferred in here, but I've been convinced to get the LV), Uni air filter, Jets, rollers, spark plugs
I'm holding off on the clutch springs for now, until I see how it rides.
Is there anything else i need to get?

Get a stiffer contra spring over the clutch springs. Clutch springs only affect the initial take off.  Or get both they're not that much and you're paying shipping anyway. Won't hurt to hold off on the springs for now if you have to. The contra spring does make a big difference though.

Looks like you've done your homework :)

What's the weight of the new rollers?

Just make sure you get the jetting right or you'll be redoing the top end before you want to  :'(

Ah yes, I'm doing a contra spring as well.
As far as the rollers, my mechanic has access to a kit, so we'll playing with them and then I'm going to buy sliders once we find the sweet spot.

Jetting, I'm guessing that 95 is a good starting point from what I've seen on here.

I'm now having second thoughts about the exhaust pipe.
I may get the technigas.... grr... just not sure....

 :D :D :D

Tecnigas makes a good pipe

Having a bunch of different rollers is the way to go  :)

Just curious where you are getting your contra spring from?  I was thinking of doing the same, not sure how to identify it or where to buy...

It can be called contra, torque, or torsion spring. It's the large spring inside the rear pulley. Here are the ones I have. Probably not the best quality but they work for me.

..and you really will want a 1500 contra..

..its almost the starting point when tuning a new cvt setup for performance..

I found out my CDI hasn't been modded. Is that a "must" to do as well? I can cruise around 40-45mph as it is now.

Must do. Same for Ign coil.

Ok, I've been digging around the forums and the interwebs and I can't seem to find a straight answer on the CDI for a 2008 People 50 2T.
Is it restricted or not? And if it is, where is it located, and what needs to be done to derestrict it (cut the green wire or the box?)?

I haven't looked into the ignition coil, what benefit does that offer?

Thanks!

Racing Planet has the cdi you need. Yours is not restricted per say but is limited in performance after 9k rpm. Your OEM cdi will work fine for most sport kits. The coil adds voltage. The higher the voltage the hotter the spark/the more complete the burn.

I finally got confirmation on the CDI's from a couple sources.  For the 2 Stroke Kymco People 50's, the CDI is in fact the larger DC unit.  If your CDI has a green wire coming out of it, then it is the restricted version (that is, if you plug the green wire in).  The earlier CDI's (like the one in my 2001 People 50), do not have a green wire visible on the outside, and are not restricted (according to the Kymco dealer).

I have asked about coils as well, and I know the aftermarket ones are supposed to have a hotter spark, and I don't think there is any difference between a 2 stroke or 4 stroke coil, as long as you get the one with 2 spade connectors on the end, and the same mount style as our bikes take.  Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I opted to run the original CDI on my BBK, and it works great.  Then again, I haven't tried the aftermarket CDI to know the difference.  Not sure if I will be doing a lot of riding above 9K rpm anyway.

The 2t, and 4t coils are in fact different. It's the winding size. They have to saturate at different rates so be sure to get a 2t/dc version

I need to get you on speed dial, Zombie! lol

So, the OEM CDI is fine, or upgrading it would be of significant benefit?

No real benefit. Your's will work fine.

..my 01 ppl does not have the dangling green wire either...

..i've had the speedo buried on that one, and it registers 90kmh...

Green wire does absolutely nothing on mine. Plugged in or not.

After upgrading my air intake and exhaust, do I need to make any adjustments to my oil ratio?

I'm planning on switching to a full synthetic. Any suggestions on what oil? I'm thinking Amsoil or Motul.
Title: Re: And so it begins.....
Post by: zombie on July 15, 2012, 10:52:20 PM
No adjusting is needed. Make sure the v notch is set within the line at full throttle, and you are fine. The oil you should use will be rated for Injection systems, and they all work between 50-100:1 ratios. Better oils leave less carbon so Use one that will put you in the poor house. It saves money in the long run.

You should already be using synthetic

I've been using Honda 2T and Lucas 2T in it.

So, I went with the Technigas pipe and a Uni filter. Where do you think a good place to start the jetting at would be?

Anywhere from 150 down. Try a few big ones first. 150/140/130/120/ Then try to dial it in closer

I'm very intrigued by this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kymco-People-50-cc-S-Scooter-6-Sigma-Custom-Carburetor-Carb-Stage-1-3-Jet-Kit-/230701774181?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b6e5b565&vxp=mtr#ht_2568wt_1180 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kymco-People-50-cc-S-Scooter-6-Sigma-Custom-Carburetor-Carb-Stage-1-3-Jet-Kit-/230701774181?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b6e5b565&vxp=mtr#ht_2568wt_1180)

Any reason not to get that (assuming they have a 2T kit)???

Someone here bought one. It turned out to be a Pilot/main, a couple spacers for the needle, and a bunch of jibberish instructions on how to build an A bomb. Not worth the money... Go to treatland, or Jets r us. Get a sh** load for the same money

We put my Technigas pipe on this weekend! I LOVE the way it sounds!
Also put in 5g rollers (to be replaced by Sliders when the come in)

We put on the Uni filter, but the largest Jet we had was running lean, so we put the stock airbox back on, and drilled about 5 holes in it.
The sound with the Uni filter on was very loud. Louder than I was wanting, actually, so I think I'm just going to stick with the airbox on.

Love the way it sounds, and the take-off and top end have shown improvements!

Is there a better filter I can use within the airbox?

I thinking I might do a hotter ignition coil. Any recommendations?

As well, toying with a CDI as well. I'm wondering if it would be much of an upgrade on this 2008? Or would the extra wear not be worth it?

Alright, I broke down and ordered a CDI and ignition coil.
I just hope I ordered the right parts! I couldn't get much info on the ignition coil.
Everything should be in this time next week!!!

All of those orange coils are supposed to be hotter than the OEM so that should be fine. CDI's are hit, and miss... Mostly miss. But they are cheap so it's no foul.

Added a new CDI, hotter ignition coil and 5g sliders!

Gain an easy 3-5mph!

Not sure what I think of the CDI. The curve is a little more aggressive than what I would like.

Also, can a new CDI need a bigger jet? I seem to be running a little leaner than I was.

The whole set of things you installed will all benefit from a fatter jet. You are getting more torque out of the cvt so you need more fuel. Cool Deal! ;D

I'm jetted at a 100 right now. I'm thinking a 105 would probably be about right.

I got it from AliExpress, from the link I previously posted.

Thanks

It's entirely possible I'm retarded but where is this link? I went back and read this thread 3 times. I might like to order a CDI and coil as well and I'd like to know which ones you bought. Thanks  :)

My Bad! I'm an idiot! I posted it in a different thread!

Here is the link: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/KFA6-KYMCO-2T-DC-High-Performance-CDI-Free-Shipping-Available/203219_445930243.html (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/KFA6-KYMCO-2T-DC-High-Performance-CDI-Free-Shipping-Available/203219_445930243.html)

I think if you just look for a DC 2T on Ebay you can find the same for cheaper.

So, everything is running pretty good.
The new CDI is definitely interesting. The RPMs get high, and they get their quick!

Now, the only question I have is when I'm at WOT I will get some RPM fluctuation. As well occasionally when starting from a stop, there will be occasional hesitation about 1/3 the way up the acceleration.
I had my scooter mechanic friend look at it, but of course it wasn't doing it around him.
We checked the plug, and it doesn't look lean at all.
Could it possible be running a little rich?

Also, at times I swear there is a bit of a gas smell when I come to a stop/stoplight.

Thanks!
