Hello, fellow Agility owners!
I've had my little Agility for almost exactly a year now. It's been a maintenance headache up to this point.. but how much I save on fuel and insurance is reason enough to keep on going.
Plus, I think we can all agree, Kymcos are fun scooters.
So here's the story... The scooter is a 2008 model with 8100 km on the clock.
I've recently had the carbuerator jetted and cleaned, and the engine was replaced over the winter.
Currently, the scooter runs fine... but something is worrying me. Getting up to speed (30-40mph) is no issue, and doesn't rise any concerns.
But when I'm at speed, traveling between 30 and 40mph, something disconcerting happens. A rattling sound can be heard coming from under the scooter... (and this is just for the sake of clarity) it sounds like something small is bouncing around inside the engine... kind of like when you drop a piece of plastic into a fan.
Note: This only happens when the throttle is fully opened (grip completely pulled back) and the bike is traveling at speed, as described above.
This worries me, because I'm afraid if it goes ignored it could lead to another new engine!
What are the probable causes and solutions?
Thanks in advance, fellow riders

have you checked valve clearences? i know i've had the same sound (or at least i think it is the same) does it sound like sticking summit metal into a fan and you get that tingtingtingtingtingting noise? but then its quite hard to say what it might be because we cant see or hear it for ourselves.
-
mmmmm might be a easy fix for ya . pull the fan cover off and check for rocks or dirt.if nothing there check your rollers see if they are ok and not worn to wear they are bounceing all over. And 3 if the sound is comeing from the back of the motor check the little springs in your clutch sometimes they do come lose and well sound like that.
-
I also get the exact same thing, i just put new rollers in recently so i assumed it was them. Plan to check my valve clearances soon anyway just in case but it runs great so i think it may be just normal. I recently noticed it more since i fitted a leo vince so it may even be a small leak that when im at full throttle causes some gas to leak out under the pressure, may need a new exaust gasket. Goin to check that too on mine. Guess you had your exhaus off during the engine swap so may well be the gasket?
Know what you mean tho about it sounding like its the fan, that was my 1st thought, i just havent got round to checking that either due to all the rain we had here lately and lack of time. Will pull the cover off and have a quick look in there too, as blue said it could just be some dirt or a small stone in the fan housing.
-
I've had the same sound on mine since it was brand new, but has gotten worse over time. It always sounds to me like it's coming from the variator. I was gonna put a new variator in anyway to upgrade and was hoping it will take car of it.
There is a previous thread on here somewhere from last year where a kid was having the exact same issue, he might have even uploaded a video. I don't know whatever happened with his case though... Might be worth checking.
-
Thanks for all the advice, guys.
Here are a few updates; it turns out the OP isn't exactly accurate. The scooter does not run fine.
It was working earlier today, and I rode it for a solid half hour so I assumed the performance issues were a thing of the past.
I've been having these performance issues off and on since I got the carb cleaned. When riding, the scooter misfires almost consistently... and sometimes when it does, it feels like the wheels are losing torque for a split second.
On the way home from work I heard a loud "pop" from the left of the bike. This only happened once in the ten-fifteen minute ride home.
The rattling also got worse. It rattled without pause all the way home.
I'm worried. Is something seriously wrong?
-
t sounds like a valve timing problem. Back fire thru the carb maybe the pop sound. Check that the air box hose is connected as well as the vacuum line.
-
also check the 2 bolds that are on the top of the motor just befor the carb if they are lose and you are geting air from there it well back fire. also check for any air leaks from puting the carb back on. go threw and just tighten things up even the muffler . sometimes biolds and nuts well come lose in time and its good just to go threw the whole scoot and check.
-
I have a similar rattle on my a50 and have never checked the valve clearance... Is there a good how to or video on this somewhere that you guys have followed before? Thanks

Check out this thread and vid

I have had a rattling for quite a while with my scoot, and have also have my valves set too tightly and too loosely. To me, the sound of the rattle and the sound of the ticking or tapping heard from improperly set valve clearances is quite different. It's hard to convey an accurate description of a noise through text.
Is there any way you could upload a video? I'm wondering if it's the same noise that I've been hearing for quite some time, if it is, I could surely eliminate the concern over valve clearance, it's a pretty distinguishable sound...

Kinda hard to tell cuz I'm sitting here with friends while they watch a crappy movie, but I believe my noise is the same as the one in this link, the third video down.
Soon as my friends leave I'll turn up the volume and confirm hahaha

Sounds exactly like mine does too, guess its normal or we all have the same problem?
-
..one of my first posts was concern about that rattle...
..had another that went something like ...that malossi rattle..
..later realized that it wasnt the malossi...lol..
-
Word- So even after a new variator was installed the rattle was still present?
-
..man, that 08 rattled for 55,000kms...
..the 09 engine that i put on the 08's frame has been rattling for another 25,000kms...
...let me throw this question out to everybody reading...
..can anybody move the engines output shaft in and out...any at all?
..talking about the shaft that the variator rides on...
..next time ya'll in the cvt, just see if it moves...
..my 08 always did...
..that being said, i just read the op...
..brother man might possibly have a problem, if its just at top speed that th scoot rattles...
-

..it was only after i installed the malossi that i noticed it...
..kenho, you were around here back in those days..lol..
:o
-
Yeah my shaft moves a little, moves maybe a mm or there abouts. I only noticed it a few weeks ago. Dont think its an issue, my VW beetle does the same, its called end float. As long as its not excessive its fine, its a good way to check the condition of a air cooled vw engine by giving it a yank. If it moves more than a mm or so its a sign the engine is worn and need a rebuild, a little movememt is normal tho, at least on vw engines.
I really only heard the noise after i derestricted, dont think it was there before that. Dont think its anything to worry about since so many others have noticed it too.
-
..ive never seen an a50 without the rattle...
-
..however, that a50 that i found for my buddy rico...nowww....
..that was a very quiet, and strong engine...
-
Ohhh, the good ol' days...
Obviously something in the variator then... it never seemed like it was something to worry a lot about, but it's annoying as hell
-
..it is annoying...
-
I used to think it was my variator guides hitting off the ramp plate plastics as it spins, still think that may be all it is.
-
...rattle-rattle-rattle...
-
mine makes a whistling noise when i accelerate, sounds like a turbo. ffffffeeeeeEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!
-
..lol, yeah, i hear that as well..
-
i like that noise....sounds cool and people turn to see what the hell is making the strange noise then see an Agility....confused faces all around and a big smile on my face.

I checked out the video you mentioned, and to tell you the truth, the sound isn't that intense.
It comes and goes, and sounds more like something is bouncing around than something is rattling... it's hard to explain.
While I'm posting, there are a few patterns I've noticed:
- While riding the scooter with a cold engine, the wheels lose torque for a split second at a time. This happens every 4-5 seconds at random, and often isn't too serious. When this happens it sounds like the RPM drops a little and returns to normal as the wheels regain torque.
- Once the engine has warmed up, the issue seems to back off a little bit, and happens less.
- This issue occurs more frequently and worse in hot weather. I rode it this evening with temperatures in the mid 70s and it performed better than it has been.
- Easing up to speed helps to avoid causing the issue. If you ease up to speed and be gentle with the throttle, not opening it completely to accelerate, the issue occurs less frequently, and the moped performs better overall. Punching the gas, so to speak, only serves to make performance worse.
- The rattling stopped mid-ride and was replaced with a very faint but detectable buzzing noise. To experience this noise, go find a bicycle and begin spinning the back tire with the pedals, then grab a leaf and set the leaf just barely against the spinning rubber. The grinding-buzzing you hear is the closest sound I can describe. It was very, very faint.
- These sounds seem to be coming from the belt drive box.
Edit:
The 'variator' seems to be the word of choice in this thread. I find no reference of it in the manual I printed off. Are there any threads/videos that detail how to maintain or replace a 'variator'?

50cc 49cc Scooter Performance Clutch and Variator install Rolling wrench (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfNJ9jL1T_I#ws) There are LOADS of vids... I would pull the cover. You may be loosing your belt. The buzz may be a spinning thread from the belt? Or a loose variator. The fan will hit, and buzz

the good old days when makeing noise on your bike was cool. like sticking a playing card in your spokes just to here it hit on the fram every time it went around.

Thanks so much! this video clarifies alot. I'm more confident about opening up my scooter's drive system now that I see how simple it is.
I went out and got a recording of the sound I'm referring to, seeing as it's kind of difficult to explain..
Listen to this:
http://www.mediafire.com/?dgpg51zfskdidp2 (http://www.mediafire.com/?dgpg51zfskdidp2) (Recorded with cellphone, quality might be lacking)
The sound that I've been trying to describe can be heard at around 5 seconds
Don't quote me on this, but it APPEARS to be coming from the components featured in the video I quoted.
Thoughts?

I beleave it to be a easy fix for ya if you never took your drive train apart befor its most likely it just needs a good cleaning. belt dust and dirt build up well make everything sound bad. I did mine and it wroked wonders for me . also your gears might be hiting your starter bendix.make sure you clean every little hole in and out around the drive tarin. also the kick start cover well need cleaned good. keep it dry dont put greese on it. you can use wd40 to clean it but make sure you dry it off good.theres a little hole that the starter bendix hits in to when you kick it over clean it out good.and take the gears out of the cover and clean the holes you well see there also.

Serious sh** :D
I would def open it up and check all cvt components and belt condition, until you do that then it could be anything. Dont know if its just wind being picked up but that sounds terrible.
-
open that sh** up then take a pic let us see......................
-
...yes!! open it up!!!
..you gotta open it!!!
..a pic is worth a thousand audio clips....

Go into the light!!! no wait... yeah go on... maybe IDK!
-
..itsa no-brainer, really...
..if my sh** sounded like that sh**, that cover is coming off!!!

Rattle rattle chit chit.... Something is loose.
Anybody have a sound clip of valve rattle?
