So I took my bike for a nice long ride in the 100+º Phoenix heat on Saturday. No issues until I pulled into a neighborhood and got on a three minute call on the cell with the engine running. (About 50 miles from home) When I put the phone away and started off, the engine sputtered and died. I started it up and again, as I gave it throttle, it died. It did this for at least four times before I really put on the throttle and off I went. It was all highway miles at 70+ until I got home. Could this be related to the heat of the day? Anyone have this issue? This is new to me. The thing only has about 1400 miles on it. Otherwise it has been flawless.

I would guess it was vapor lock in the fuel lines. Is there a Schrader valve in the line somewhere? (tire valve). If it does it again, and will not start... with the key on, and the engine stopped you can push in the valve to allow the fuel vapors to escape. All should be well after clearing the air.

Maybe just a clog in your fuel system. Try to observe first :)

Same thing happened to me before, it should correct itself as did mine.

I used to live in Phoenix for over 30 years. A few of my bikes would vapour lock when it was very hot. I had to pull over and open the gas cap. Try this next time and see if it stops? :-*

Thanks guys. Not sure about the Schrader valve as I haven't seen one via casual observation. In Kymco's defense, it was a miserably hot day. It started as an early day out doing estimates at three stops but my customers love to jib-jab. By the time I was on my way back, it was about noon and 106º. It was still an awesome ride. The bike feels at home in the 70-80mph range.

Yeah, it happens a lot when it's hot. Some mechaninc said it was usual for a big bore one cylinder.
I had a 115 jet in my 500X, and it was hard to make it home, and that's even after I adjusted the valves to .004 inches.
So I put in a 125 jet, and I'm running a Leo Vince exhaust at 5300 feet in elevation, which I thought would be rich, but it's a little better because it feels like it's running cooler.
I think it is endemic to the engine under these conditions, so don't do a bunch of stop and go driving in extreme heat.

I rode mine in 114 degree heat. The 500Ri decals slipped off - but it never sputtered (not even at long lights). Most engines don't even run clean until they are 140 to 160 degrees. Idling it for 3 minutes in the heat is a different story because it can't cool itself. What did the temp gauge on the dash say? As long as I'm moving I'll pass out from the heat before the bike does...

Mine did it a while back, stop and go, hot and humid...standard for San Antonio. My mechanic removed a spring around the gas cap and drilled a small hole. I also only buy gas from a couple of the major gas stations and ones that have a lot of traffic and lots of fuel deliveries. And high octane and stabil in the tank as well. With that being said, it hasn't happened again, knock on wood. ( and I added a road gremlin bell just in case )

I've added Seafoam to the mix last week and after riding it around in 114º heat, it's been fine.
