Hope everyone on this forum is doing good, I just bought another people 50 yesterday for 300.00. It's running, but needs a little bit of cosmetic work.
Needs new key lock, needs new mirrors, the speedometer dosen't work either and the seat could be replaced or reupholstered
all in all im happy, curious if there's anyway to tell the milage and if that really holds any weight in the reliablity? i'm just trying to ensure I bought a scooter that has some life in it, it's almost 10 years, but my 2002 kymco people 50 runs like a beast!!!

just reupholstered the seat with leopard print duck tape 8)

A compression test will tell you more than anything else. You should have 120psi Minimum. 140-150 is good shape. The floor boards, and grips will tell alot about actual riding time too. Compare them to yours.

Thanks for the response zombie!!! I was thinking of either taking it to my local scooter shop and paying 125.00 for a tune up, or possibly doing the work myself with this forums help

Definately do it yourself. I'm a computer programmer and somehow I managed to rebuild my engine (which says a lot). These guys are pretty easy to work on.

Keep it in house Bro! You will be real glad you did. You really have to Know how they work/what each piece does to really make them last.
Most Shop repairs wind up in the back yard after the first repair bill. (fool me once)

You guys have convinced me to do it myself, i've taken the front apart so far and plan on repainting the body and tuning it. What tools do you guys suggest? i'm a complete noob, all i own is a ratchet set and some basic tools

..some 3/8" drive metric sockets and ratchet..a cpl or four 8-10" screwdrivers, phillips and straight..a set of off-set box-end metric wrenches from 8mm-17 is handy..
..i gotta 1/2" drive 19.2 volt craftsman cordless impact wrench that's th' bomb!!..
....theere's a few specialty tools that are nice to have when you get into removing drive faces and clutches and such, but they aren't "required", if you can be a bit resourceful..lol....

1/4" drive metric socket set too. Stubby philips driver. Needle nose pliers. Vise grips. test light or Multi Meter
For a hundred bucks you can get it all at Harbor freight. (both slingers, and my list) They are not the best quality but they will do everything on your scooter.

So i've started to de assemble the front a bit, i'm installing a new lock set today, the speedometer does not work for some reason?? Any suggestions on that repair??
Would home depot be a good cheap place to get the tools needed to do this restoration??
Also I looked at the handles, there is much much more wear than my current red people. This people I bought for 300.00 definitely has a considerable bit of wear. Will I still be able to make this a economical project?? So far i'm in 350 with the new mirrors and lock set purchased, it runs decent, but i haven't the slightest clue what could help have this baby running better, I'm a perfectionist and I've been trying to clean all the rust off the nuts etc and there is a hairline crack on the side panel right under the seat ???

..just use caution when assembling the plastics back in place...
..don't over-torque the fasteners...
..be mindful of the molded plastic clips down front, underneath...
..theres also plastic tabs in the headlight tupperware...dont snap those...

Even if you went mildly nuts, and spent 400.00 fixing Everything the bike is still worth 800.00. I think it's a fair investment in saving money down the road.

What should I begin with to start tuning it and ensuring I get some life and is safe?

1500 contra spring, new rollers/belt. Hotter Ign coil. 100.00 bucks will get you those, and a new spark plug + all new filters. Start using Amsoil, or any other top shelf injector oil.

Anyone have any suggestions on repairing the speedometer, or will i just have to replace it? the clock works perfect, ha
I'm decided to basically take apart the whole thing, where should i start?

I just had the same thing happen with my speedo on my 2005. Pull the cable, and see if the end is broken off inside of the hub. If it is, then its a cable. If the cable is in good shape, put any old electric drill on the end of the cable, tighten the chuck onto the cable end, and spin your drill. If the speedo moves, then its the gear inside of the wheel. Its a hub assembly that costs about $40 from Kymco. If the speedo doesn't move with the drill connected, then check the other end of the cable, and make sure its connected, if it is, you need a speedo.

If you want to do a total rebuild it takes 15 minutes to pull the entire engine. Id start my clean up there. There is a "link to manuals thread" here. Get you one of them too.
Ask anything you need Bro! The worst that could happen is Blue will give advice... (sorry blue) I think he is the scooter anti christ. He broke valve caps.

With regards to the Big Bore kit.... I have a 2001 people 50 2t. When I bought it she had an airsal 72cc kit installed (hack Job). A month into ownership, the engine seized. I bought a new kit and replaced it. The piston on the kit that i bought was faulty, and a big chunk tore off of it and ruined the second kit I had. The airsal kits are nickle plated aluminum cylinders and in both cases were destroyed. I decided to bring her back to stock. I was the best decision that I have made.
With the kit on the scoot, I was able to hit 52 mph. It was very squirly at the start too. I had to lean forward to keep the front wheel on the ground.
With a de-restricted stock set up, I cruise at 47 mph, and have hit 50 with the wind at my back. I weigh 210 lbs. The only differences that I notice are at start, she is still very quick off the line, but does not wheelie unless I want it to. Mid range speed and power bog a little at about 30 mph but regulate at about 35 mph. High end, there is not a ton of difference, other than how much more quite it is. I have put 3000 km on the stock set up so far this summer. It is my daily driver, with a 20 mile each way trip to work every day. I would highly recommend keeping your scoot stock, and de-restricting/ tuning to run at these higher speeds. I wasted a lot of time and $ on the big bore set up, when it was really not necessary.

..yeah, RI Catsailor, thos 2001 ppls are awesome!! I was blown away by mine...
..the thing is, after 2004, they have a smaller carb, restricted driven pulleys, and a different exhaust..
..not all peoples will perform like a 2001...

Wow, I guess I got lucky on this one. I was just out at lunch and a guy on a Kymco Agility 50 4 stroke pulled up next to me, smiled, and revved. I left him so far behind in my mirrors I couldnt believe it. Makes for a great ride to and from work. My last scoot was a 1984 Honda Spree. Although I loved the spree (was light and I could lift off dock onto boat by my myself) the difference here is night and day. I never feel as though I am being run down. The big wheels are the balls vs the 8X2.5's that i had on my spree.

BBKs are necessary when you live in hilly terrain. I live in rolling foothills. It's not the flat ground speed I need, I need the torque to climb the hills. My BBK made huge improvements in torque.
