The mysterious fall of the largest of the world's earliest urban civilizations nearly 4,000 years ago in what is now India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh now appears to have a key culprit — ancient climate change, researchers say.

Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia may be the best known of the first great urban cultures, but the largest was the Indus or Harappan civilization. This culture once extended over more than 386,000 square miles (1 million square kilometers) across the plains of the Indus River from the Arabian Sea to the Ganges, and at its peak may have accounted for 10 percent of the world population. The civilization developed about 5,200 years ago, and slowly disintegrated between 3,900 and 3,000 years ago — populations largely abandoned cities, migrating toward the east.
"Antiquity knew about Egypt and Mesopotamia, but the Indus civilization, which was bigger than these two, was completely forgotten until the 1920s," said researcher Liviu Giosan, a geologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Nearly a century ago, researchers began discovering numerous remains of Harappan settlements along the Indus River and its tributaries, as well as in a vast desert region at the border of India and Pakistan. Evidence was uncovered for sophisticated cities, sea links with Mesopotamia, internal trade routes, arts and crafts, and as-yet undeciphered writing.

For some reason, this topic always infuriates me because both sides are somewhat correct in their assumptions. It is also true that both sides have studies paid for by those who profit by the conclusions of said studies.
Climate change conversation usually leaves me wanting to bop a person over the head. I will watch what others think, because I don't need to aggravate myself.
Know this though, regardless of your opinion, we're all screwed. Most of us human beings are wasteful, resource-less creatures that do nothing but de-construct for benefit of wealth and image. This goes hand-in-hand with this potential debate.

The issue is the rate of warming that is currently taking place. Using ice cores from Antarctica scientists can go back 160,000 years and measure the rate of warming and cooling trends bases on the different gasses trapped in the ice. The planet is warming right now faster (much faster) than it has in at least the last 160,000 years, and if milder global warming chased civilizations out of the Indus valley, imagine what a higher rate of change will do!
The culprit in all this? CO2 and methane. We have been dumping both into the atmosphere for the last couple hundred years, and the rate of dumping them has increased expodentially over the last century. CO2 and methane hold heat in the atmosphere. It's their job, and when everything is balanced they allow life to exist. We, however, have thrown the balance off and are starting to reap the results.
Unfortunatelly, even when exposed to the science behind global warming, skeptics (and those politicians and companies who are profiting from poisining the atmosphere) will continue to dis-believe (can one use the word belief when climate change is a fact?). Reality is, not believing in the human cause of increased global warming is kind of like not believing in gravity. I couls say I don't believe in gravity until I'm blue in the face but my butt still won't float off the chair!

The problem "they" have is that they went from "Global warming" to "climate change" because it "GW" didn't hold water so now we'll call it "CC". Sure change things to suit the condition. Yet I don't see anyone address the Climate change in the other thread (will have to chack if any updates after this post) How was there CC that wiped out a civilization 4,000 years ago? Amaging was that it was localized "global warming", how is that possible?
And as far as people making money off of something Al Gore is making a killing on his "carbon credits" idea and trillions more will be made in the near future. So don't preach about who's making money off of something, talk about inventing a problem.

The dust bowl could easily be explained by el nino' (spelling) which hapens every 12-13 yrs. Once the top soil is gone there is nothing for plants to hold onto and nothing grows. Good point but I still don't buy it.

It was actually caused from farmers clear cutting the plains. They eliminated all the grass, and kept planting wheat till the soil was bare of nutrients. This left a VAST plain of dirt. The Midwest is it's own climate. So eliminating the grass raised the Temp of the region. The Temp increase caused stronger winds in the region that stripped all the "dirt". That dirt contaminated surrounding areas making the Midwest un inhabitable until fertilizer, and crop rotation was introduced in the mid/late thirties. Some regions are more susceptible to smaller changes than others. It just comes down to humans taking without re paying.

I think in the islands they wore less years ago then they do today. I remember many topless photos during WWII.

The lower Indus valley has nothing to do with Nepal or Bangladesh. Just 1500 miles apart and with very different climate (extreme mountains and rainfall) and culture (still conserved in Nepal, but Bangladesh is under Hindu culture influence for ca. 2000 years).
Global warming imo should affect the globus and not just a single river valley.
But it is true that the Indus valley was much greener 5000 years before.
Still there a lot of possible local reasons (deforestation, avulsion, false watering leading to dryland salinity, ...)
We know several ancient cultures that run into problems by overexploiting their resources, esp.- around the Mediterranean Sea.

Have any of you had those self sustaining terrariums? They do just fine for years. Add so much as a Flea, and the whole shebang dies in a week. People, and the Earth are Much the same. Unless we control population/waste management/and eliminate fossil fuels we are destined to pollute till we die. Use any argument you want but the fact is a fact. Humans are destroying the Earth. Not monkeys, or cows or dinosaurs. People.

I have an indoor fountain with plants and fish.

The plants live off the fish waste cleaning the water. It's a good deal for both. I have had aquariums my whole life. Once they are established, and "balanced" there is no maintenance. Just feed the fish, and nature does the rest.

That is absolutely WRONG. Both the Arctic, and Antarctic have lost more than 1/3rd of their ice in the last 20 years. That is the Biggest issue in both regions right now. If 1/3rd more melts Florida will be gone. Along with some other places I don't care about... ;)

Zombie hit the nail on the head, ive been saying for years we need to better control population growth. Goes back to that condom thread, we need birth control and we need to make less babies. Im strict on the one in one out policy, noone needs 5-6 kids, we have 2, 1girl to replace my wife and a boy to replace me, finished. Make it so if you have more it cost you more in taxes etc, that'll soon cut the numbers popping out. And make contraception available to all.

Not really sure what your saying here, are you saying that it doesn't matter what we do the earth will be screwed. Or are you saying only if we don't stop burning fusel fuels etc.?
As for earth becoming like Venus I'm not sure how you can compare the 2, the earth and Venus are not even close to being the same planets, have different orbits and that orbit is what makes the temp. so much different on Venus then on Earth. As far as I know they havn't proven life ever existed on Venus yet.

The American people only know what their gov and mass media tell them, they are followers, just like sheep. As for the other 15% crack, it's the White house leading the charge for us to march the GW march.
I'll see if I can find the stats that show the past 3 or 4 decades the temps have gone down overall.

I want to reiterate my previous position....
There were around 1 billion people in the world in 1800 and around 7 billion today. About 30 years from now, we might reach 9 billion and so on and so forth. The earth's size is not getting bigger. Our resources are deteriorating. The number of humans are increasing and the number of plant and animal species are decreasing. There are around 500,000 babies born everyday. There's just toooo many of people that depend on limited resources.

I was watching a documentary at the weekend about the future of the car. Heard an astounding fact, " DAVID L. GREENE (Oak Ridge National Laboratory): Our transportation system is almost entirely fueled by petroleum, more than 95 percent. A quarter of all the petroleum ever consumed in the history of the world was consumed in the last 10 years. So we're consuming it at an accelerating rate. ". The doc was from 2007 i think so i guess its worse now, thats one f@#ked up situation we have, and we wonder why the world feels sick?

Im not getting into a big debate here, i see no need since most of us all agree global warming is real and is happening. For those wbo dont want to accept it, thats up to them, it wont affect my thinking on the matter.

Thats already happening. News report yesterday i saw said in the next 10 yrs most of China will abandon their bicycles in favour of cars or motorcycles. There are around 8,000,000 cycles in China so imagine if even only 1/3rd switch to petrol, its all f#%ked.

I'm all in favor of someone making a car or other veh. that runs on batt/electric power. I'd even pay a premium for one of maybe 25% over the standard petro car/cycle.
This way I can charge it with my solar panel(s).

My biggest fear is everything we take OUT of the planets core is leaving a void. Water/mud cannot replicate the viscosity/nature/purpose of crude oil. The dynamics of the planet ARE changing. No one believes it is due to removing the fluid reserves inside. I am FIRMLY convinced. Most of the "hype" is aimed at the atmosphere, and is valid (imho) but the real danger is inside.IMHO.

Thats exactly what i want. Solar panels on my garage roof and an electric scoot, you can then run it on free fuel really. I am not for electric vehicles at all until they can be powered or charged with renewables, plugging into the grid only shifts the polution from your tailpipe to the power plant. Cant see the oil corps allowing us all to run our transport for free, we could have did it years ago but no doubt they had a hand in slowing or blocking the idea.

Minerals are used in batteries. Minerals are mined. Not with electric shovels either.

Recently they've been fitting loads of solar panels in bus-stops here to power the lights etc for "free". Everytime i ride past one i keep thinking of prying some off for my garage roof :D
Would love my house roof covered too, many Spanish homes use solar to run the aircon in summer and heating in winter.

I have 4 canned spot type lights in my kitchen, when one burns out I'm replacing them with LED spots, so far onoly replaced 1 @$20 per it's expensive, but I can't tell a difference between the two.

Here's my take on Global warming in a nut shell, If the Gov. is for it I'm against it. Our gov is not in it for the betterment of mankind, only the lining of their and their friends pockets.
The sooner we relaze this the sooner we can defeat them or maybe stay one step ahead of them.

Thats exactly why we dont do anywhere near what we need to be doing 08. Sure they pretend to care and even bring in some laws or legislations but really its a sham, none of it is even close to what the science says we need to be doing. Truth is they dont want to change but they pretend they do because for many its a big issue today, we want action to try slow or even prevent future problems caused by climate change so to get the green vote they have to pretend to care, and pretend to act.
All limits, agreements and actions in place so far go no where near to fixing the problem, and thing dont look like changing any time soon. The US is the biggest polluter, along with China, and these are the main countries who resist what mkst of Europe and the reat of the world want.

We are #1. Europe, we saved your asses from the Germans not once but twice, you owe us, so you'll pay $8.00 per gal of gas while we pay a small fraction of that. Africa, there is nothing there so stop whining, the only country worth its salt was South Africa and we broke them, now their leaders can be controlled like the rest of the continent. North Africa and the middle east, well let’s just say as long as you serve our purpose it's all good, just don't step out of line. China, buy our debt, your economy will fail before too long (signs of this already) and you'll need us to buy your debt, plus we saved your ass from Japan during WWII.
South America, so primitive that we will mine your country for precious metals and you'll do nothing about it but take the payday (politicians of course).

My dad was in the US Air Force so I grew up on airbases and was overseas a lot. 2 years in Alaska, 4 years in Germany, 4 years in California, 2 years in the Azores, and then I went to high school in the Panama Canal Zone.
A lot of kids were typical Americans from Indiana or Ohio ro anywhere, but a lot of us had mothers who were German, Italian, British, Japanese, Filipino, or like my mother, French.
It was really important that we cultivated an American culture, and it was a real melting pot, not multi-cultural, we all wanted to be Americans first, and of another heritage second. It was like small town America on another planet, and we all pulled together to make our little home town wherever we were.
When we went to visit the family in France, we stood out as 100% American, we weren't French at all, and all the French kids wanted to hear what it was like in America, and was it really cool in California.

Just to expand on this post a little, I had a friend when I was a kid, he was a kid without a country. His parents were from Italy and he was first generation American. Americans saw him as itialian American and when he went to Italy his family there saw him as distinctly American. It must be tough on kids in that situation.

We all wanted to go to America too and become "Americans" Why, not because of culture but because of all the nice things America has to offer (at least before). Mostly material things. Culture is not a subject matter for a child or a teener or even most grown up Asian to ponder upon. It's the milk and honey that wants us to be there. My brother and lots of relatives are in America. The only reason why I don't live in America is that I don't like a fast paced life. ;)

When my brother started there in the 80's, he gets up early to deliver newspapers (he called this exercise), goes home and prepares for work, after work he prepares for another work, then another. Weekends he worked at an amusement park entrance tearing tickets. If he's not working, he stays home and cries. Now, he has his own Company, a French wife, and all the good things in life. He just worked hard and reaped his rewards. However, he definitely won't retire there.

Who says you are going to make it that far anyway? I Respect those that do it all for later... I've just seen toooooooooooooo many burst bubbles. Maybe I'm jaded but I enjoy every day now. I ride a scoot because it is like waking up on Xmas morning to find a mini bike under the tree. I smile every day.

Thats why i refuse to take out a pension plan, i saw and heard of way, way too many folk who scrimped and saved all their days to pay into plan to give a decent pension in retirement. Come retirement they get very little relative to what they paid in. I even know at least one guy who got less than he paid in to the plan after 40yrs!
My house is almost paid, i got 15-25 yrs left of work depending when i decide to retire, and i have some savings, that'll do me. We get a state pension anyway which i could live on as it would provide the basics, add 15-25yrs of savings on top and i will be just fine. State pension pays boring stuff like bills etc, my savings pays for fun stuff like holidays and scoots etc.
Over here there is no incentive to save for retirement, the more you have the less you get. If you have nothing you get the full state pension etc but if you had a private/company pension then you get less state pension so are penalised. My money will ne taken out tje bank 6-12 months before i quit and stored away safely. I wont be rich or even well off but i will be happy and i will have no finacial worries till i die at 120.

That is what brings us to me! I can't see taking the chance. Working 80+ hour weeks to plan for the years when you are too worn down to enjoy the "reward". Who says you are going to make it that far anyway? I Respect those that do it all for later... I've just seen toooooooooooooo many burst bubbles. Maybe I'm jaded but I enjoy every day now. I ride a scoot because it is like waking up on Xmas morning to find a mini bike under the tree. I smile every day.
Same here, I go to the office on the scoot everyday and log on to Kymcoforum and others. I go home at around 6, prepare my rhum and watch TV, be with my kids, eat then sleep. Luv it!!!

They have to experience the "country". It's part of being human. I always make it a point to bring my kids to grandpa's farm and experience nature. Catch chicken, riding a buffalo, go to the waterfalls, fish, etc.

there have been more and more volcanic eruptions around the world aswell as earthquakes and general fu*ked up weather. somthing is happening to the earth but i think it may be a natural cycle and not supposed global warming. somthing is happening in and around the earth and we are seeing and feeling it up on the surface. we dont know how many of the past civilisations were lost, how did they meet there fate? all we know is that 1000's and 1000's of people from around the world got wiped out.
who knows about atlantis? the city in the middle of the ocean that got swallowed by the sea. there are many things around us that are not OF us...what im saying is there were people probably more advanced and due to a global cataclism were wiped off the face of the earth.
i personally wouldnt want the world to go pysco and start a mass genocide but if it happens then we need to be somwhat prepared for what might come..you only have to look to the past to get an insight into the future.

This is what I said plain and simple. I was referring to the "experience" of DISASTER, weather or geology or even war. Global warming will be a big "disaster" . People have experienced DISASTERS and these must give them a little hint that a bigger DISASTER is yet to come....

those kind of movies like "2012" and such are only speculation. i think most of the time when someone thinks "end of the world" i tend to think "end of the world As We Know It" the world might not come crashing down around us but there could be a drastic change in world leadership that will change the way we live our lives and so changing the world as we know it. but then i cant disregard the possible fact that there might be a global phenomenom which will also change the world as we know it.

This is something relating to that... I installed that "ride on" tire sealer. The front tire on the Vruk stays light all the time. Not really any weight on it. The Rear gets hot as hell. Almost burns your hand like hot asphalt. With the ride on installed the rear is the same temp as the front. I must have dropped the temp 30-40 degrees. I'm SURE it is going in the ZX too.

I'm sure a lot of heat transfers from the CVT to the rear wheel/tire as well. I think the smaller wheels/tires get hotter too. I like the 16s on my peop ;D
