New CDI Unit question just replaced CDI Unit still no spark :( the new unit has a Green Led on the end of box anyone know what it for ?? i hooked all 5 wires up
here is how i hooked them up the green led does not come on.
CDI Box Scooter
Red Black/Red Stripe
Black Black/White Stripe
Blue Blue/Yellow Stripe
Green Green No Stripe
Yellow Black/Yellow Stripe
Still no spark and put on New Coil also.
Thanks Everyone

Looks like you have it connected correctly. The green led flashes every time it fires. I would be suspect of the pulser coil on the stator...sounds like it's not telling the cdi to fire. To test it disconnect the stator connector and measure resistance between the blue/yellow wire and ground. It should be between 80 - 160 ohms.
-
Thank you Shaka,
I will test this out right :) and post what i find.

Switch the Blue, and the Yellow. You may not see the led light either at starting speed. It does glow better at rpm. The pulse is too fast for low speed/rpm. ( on mine anyway)
-
Thanks zombie,
But no matter what i try i just cant get spark to come out of the plug:) maybe i should just torch the scooter :) i did the pulser coil test also read was 150 ohm the only parts i have not bought now is a stator and pulser coil and a ignition switch. and a new wiring harness. are there any hidden fuses switches.
Philip

No fuses for the cdi but there is a kill switch on the throttle side control. This will startle you but have you HELD the plug to verify no spark? It may just be weak, and you won't see it. You can get a stator on ebay or the dealer for about 40-50 bucks. I have had SEVERAL bad stators in four years w/ this scoot.
-
Check the engine ground wire too. It should attach at the starter motor. If that is broken/missing it wont run
-
Check the engine ground wire too.
Good point! Check for continuity between the green wire and the frame.
-
Hi zombie,
I did check the kill switch with a meter when i pressed it the meter went on and off so i guess this part is ok :) as far a spark plug i have not held it in my hand :) should i stand in water for this test ;D just kidding but you did talk about the green wire on the starter that seems to be on very well. is there a chance when i turn on the key switch it mite not be making contact ? is there a way to test this switch ?
as always thanks for your help.

I was referring to the green wire leading into the cdi...make sure it is grounded.
-
One of those wires goes to the kill switch I think it's the black, and red. Try snipping that one near the cdi. I have had a bad switch on a customers scoot. The kill stayed grounded even with the key on.
Don't stand in water. Use black powder instead. If it don't spark just sweep it up. Water gets your socks wet.
On the real.... Try to spin it over holding the plug. That will tell if it's dead, or just lazy. The ground at the starter should be direct to the battery, and another ground to the cdi will eliminate that issue for testing if the spark is just weak.

Hello Everyone,
after taking all the info from this post i started i am down to still no spark so let me post all i have done :)
New - cdi
New - Plug
New - coil
checked the ground wire to starter.
checked the green wire going into cdi.
checked connection to cdi all are no good.
;D Held spark plug in hand while trying to start it no shock to me :)
checked kill switch it is good.
But there is some good news the Green led on the cdi box does flash when i try to start it. not bright But it does flash. so this is where im at no spark at plug.
clipped Black and red wire at cdi did not work so i hooked it back up.
Any ideas will be checked out?
Thank You
Every one for all your input.

Do you have a copy of the service manual? If not here it is...http://www.kymco.it/contributi/download/MANUALI_OFFICINA/MO%20ZX50%20(inglese).zip (http://www.kymco.it/contributi/download/MANUALI_OFFICINA/MO%20ZX50%20(inglese).zip)

No but i do now ;D thank you.

No worries! Read through that and post any ?'s. I don't know what the problem is? It seems the only thing you haven't replaced is the stator and ignition switch. Maybe re-check all of your connections?
-
Thank You i will post this is not going to beat me ! The stator is a 6 pole do i need the same part number or is there one from a different scooter that will fit ?
Thanks philip
-
Sadly NO OTHER STATOR! Your flashing indicates the Pulser coil is good. WAIT... You have the blue heat sink cdi? Too lazy to look back... Post up how you wired it. I saw a thread where Shaka verified the wires but I think 2 were transposed... ?
-
Yeah this was it... Did you try switching those 2? With all the new goodies I bet it will fire!
-
Hello Zombie,
Yes i did switch the Blue and Yellow as you talked about in one of the post you send me there was no change ??? any I do have the Blue cdi with heat sink. I just checked again now that it dark outside and should see a spark but there was none.
Here is how it is hooked up right now.
CDI Scooter
Red Black/Red Stripe
Black Black/White Stripe
Blue Blue/Yellow Stripe
Green Green
Yellow Black/Yellow Stripe
:) Guess i need a 24 Volt Battery just kidding. This is Crazy but im going to beat it.
Thank You
Philip

Well try switching the blue, and yellow again.
I had the same issue with the same cdi 4 years ago. I (like you) tried everything! I ordered the Suitai, and 1 kick. I thought the cdi was a mis match but perhaps it was faulty all along.(like yours?)
-
Hello Zombie,
I just went out and switched the Blue and Yellow no luck i put the old cdi on and switched it also no spark ? do you think the new cdi i got is bad ? maybe i should try to get another one ? and what is your thoughts on the stator? should i track one of those down also:) any input you could offer me.
Thanks
Philip

What I allways suggest is the same... Buy a new stator, and cdi. 100 bucks will stop the torment. Then you will have at least one goo spare on one part. My Daywot ebay cdi was defective. I suppose it could be you have one too. I've seen maybe a hundred replaced cdi's here over the years (on zx's). So two out of a hundred sounds real.
-
Thank you everyone im going to find a stator & a CDI i think this is the best way to go:) i will post the outcome.
Thanks again
Philip
-
No trouble. I sure that will get it.
-
Just had a thought...not sure if this is an accurate test but turn the key on and turn the headlight on, when you kick start the engine does the headlight flicker dimly? I think this will tell you if your stator is generating power. Otherwise, I'll go turn on my other computer and check, I think I have the wiring diagram for the new cdi on it. I don't really feel like pulling mine apart to check...at least right now.
-
;D Thank you Shaka i will test this right after work on Wed and post what i find out. at this point i will check anything out ;D
Thank You again
Philip

Just double checked and I believe you have the correct wiring...basically it follows the tracer color. The only confusing ones are the black, blue, and yellow.
CDI Scooter (wire/tracer)
Black----Black/White
Blue-----Blue/Yellow
Yellow---Black/Yellow
Red-----Black/Red
Green---Green
Hope this helps to verify your wiring. I have had a bad spark plug before...may also want to try a different plug, even a used one you know works. That issue took forever to figure out!
-
Hi Shaka,
Just did the test with Key on head light turned in and gave the kick start a workout not even a dim flicker so just to be sure i unplugged the light and hooked a volt meter to the wires no movement :-[ but thank you for the idea to try.
Philip
-
It was just a thought...but i will go check mine. Hold on. :)
-
Just went out in the garage and unplugged my spark plug, turned the key on, turned the headlight on...while kicking rapidly my headlight flickers dimly.
-
Thank You it's looking like a stator more and more :D thank you for your time and testing this out for me.
philip
-
No problem...we'll figure this out! Make sure you kick the sh!t out of it...I had too. Just one kick once every second didn't do it. I believe this test will check your stator though...the headlight is one of the only things that runs only off the A/C from the stator.
