Title: thermostat for water cooled super 9
Post by: justmalc on April 19, 2012, 01:07:50 PM
Hi does anyone know where I can get a Thermostat for the super 9 lc.? Is this engine used in any other bike?
Many thanks. Malc.

In some cases there is no reason not too. Sometimes tho the water passes thru the radiator soo quickly it does not have a chance to loose enough heat. Is this the scoot you have the temp. issue with Slinger? That could be the cause... Just thinking.
Some will run much cooler w/out a t-stat due to better flow so trial, and error.

..i took the thermostat out troubleshooting the problem....

..helped a little, but still hot after a few miles of running...

..josh said it's going to run hotter, but it melts my cvt fans....

..wasn't an issue in the winter..

Perhaps boiling out the radiator? Could be some blockage. Or maybe since it's a bigger jug with LESS water area a bigger Rad? or a second small rad under the belly

..y'know...that pump was sh**, before j rebuilt it....

..anybody know a good way to verify coolant flow??

You have to know the base flow rate to compare. You also have static pressure testing but again you need a base to compare.
Run the inlet side of the pump into a 5 gallon pail, and the outlet into the same pail. At cruise rpm take the outlet hose , and put it in a quart bottle. Time it till full. That will give the gph of the pump. For pressure it is the same as a home inspector uses. A pressure gauge mounted to the outlet side rated at cruise rpm.
Perhaps someone will compare to give you the base line #'s.

I mentioned using a Quart bottle. That is to keep from melting the jug by filling a gallon.

I said pump in the post but meant the Radiator. The bucket replaces the Rad.
On marine engines I look for a 1" hose to shoot 1' above the hose at cruise rpm. Like a fountain in the park.

..i got that...when i get time, i wanna compare the two s9s flow rates....

....nina, the 50cc can run 50 miles and be just warm enough that you can keep your hand on the jug afterward...

..not so with bertha....take th skin off!!!

May just be the nature of the beast. I'd look into a bigger/Aux. Rad. or fans...
Either one could add many miles.
Have you seen the "wetter water" products?. Lots of race engines use it along with distilled water instead of proper "anti freeze".

The water pump on that engine was actually replaced, not rebuilt.  It came off of a new Super 9 engine that was the result of some recall back in the day.  Something to do with the structural integrity of the CVT side crankcase... the recall was before I was really privy to Kymco.  That said, the water pump should hopefully be okay, but hotter running can certainly have an affect on things.

The high compression ratio is a factor, yes, but in my opinion (I have not verified with tests) the Prima cylinder's waterjacket is a more contributing factor to the heat than the cylinder head.  I went out to the shop just now, and snapped a few quick photos in effort to illustrate the point:

Above, is a stock liquid cooled cylinder.  Note the water jacket.

A Prima (or Char-Mo) cylinder, seems to be very close to what I would expect to see from a stock cylinder that has been re-bored.  I didn't have an extra Prima laying around, but I marked the cylinder with a scribe line to show the approximate re-bore.  The water jacket is the same, therefore you've got more surface area in the bore, a bigger piston, more air, (likely) higher temps, and with the same amount of water moving around the parts to cool 'em down.

This photo shows the Stock Super 9 cylinder next to a Malossi cast-iron, and an Airsal.  Notice how both have significantly larger waterjackets.

The engine in bertha was originally built an a stretched budget - thus the Prima cylinder in the first place.  For what it is, I felt it was doing alright, but I don't like to know that it's running that hot!  I've got to get on the ball and send you that other cylinder head. Despite the fact that the water jacket on the cylinders are different, the cylinder heads themselves have quite a few differences.

Cheers!

~Josh

How do you feel about adding fans/additional Rad. ?

...nina has a "new" engine, as a result of that recall...

..the larger bore/with same water flow makes sense, i just need to figure out a way to cool this puppy down a bit more..

..she was fine in the winter, hotter, but not excessively, and i've not seen the temp light on at all yet...

Try shorting the wire at the sender. It may not be working if it is melting fans...

..yeah, it gets hot, bro...i've completely melted one, and the next one i put in, after repairing split cvt cooling hose, has melted around the edges.....

I don't know what kind of heat the seals can take... I imagine they would be even hotter!

That is just crazy that she gets that hot...
I had found a kit for mine but it uses the oem head... I'm nervous awaiting your outcome...
It's looking oem for me...

...well, the head might be fine, but check out josh's pics on the jugs water jacket differences...amazing....

well, the head might be fine, but check out josh's pics on the jugs water jacket differences...amazing....

I did see that.. Then i got nervous..
I think i found the prima kit he used.
I thought it was a kit on bertha, not a re-bore
I found a Naraku 70 but it looks like the water jackets are alot smaller compared to the malossi i had.
Plus it uses the oem head.. all that may cause the same heat issue

..the prima kit is just that, basically...an oem re-bore...

Hey Guys!!! I know a fella to talk to. Louie from SPI. He, and his buddy just finished a Yama Zuma using the Polini Evo from the S9 that has Dyno'ed at 31 HP. This guy is a world class tuner, and is Very willing to help.
I talked to him about a Mina case idea I have, and he didn't hesitate to suggest the S9 evo kit for it. (loads of adapting but worth it)
