Title: Another Carb Thread... OEM S9 Issues
Post by: thebatman on April 10, 2012, 08:44:53 PM
What up guys,
I'm going to try and upload a vid. PLEASE forgive the quality, bouncing for about 25 seconds. WTF?  ::)
Anyway, i gotta question about a s9 issue.
Starts fine, idles fine...
Give it gas, she'll open up but then die out until you let go of the throttle...
Here is the vid..... What's your opinion??????

DAM... I sound red-neck as a mo fo there.... :o
W.T.H is up with that?.. Same thing when i was on t.v, sounded country.. ::)

Anyway, i guess i should have done a lil more history.
OEM, Several miles on engine, probably 14,500kms. New base/head gasket.
Carb is OEM. She smokes good but will die out like the vid shows. I would not think any lean condition since all is oem.

I have a suspision in mind, for the noise, IDK if you could tell in the vid..
I can still hear it in the vid.  :-\ which i do not like the idea worth a sh#t..
I know for sure it's not the W.P, the var side looks good. Bearings tight on both sides.

I will have to rename this thread.. ;D

Have you cleaned the carb?  Sounds like a clogged MJ to me.  At what point in the throttle does it cut out?  Why the new head/base gaskets?  Did you do anything else internally?  Have you done a leak-down test?  If it's not the carb then I would suspect either a vacuum leak only at higher rpm's or an ignition issue.  Have you checked the crank bearings?  Hard to tell from your poor video, but something sounds a little funny.  That may be where a vacuum leak is also.

I think a vacuum leak too. It is starving for fuel. That is proven by the good restart. If it flooded it would be hard as hell to restart.
If a Batman superhero sounded THAT country... Id laugh my yankee ass off.

..it coulda been me talkin on the vid....

..no sh**!!!...batty, we sound the same..

                      :o

..to me, it sounds like it is starving for fuel....cant generate enough combustion to take those rpsm up....

Yeah, i cleaned it several times lately...lol
Why the new head/base gaskets?  Did you do anything else internally?  Have you done a leak-down test?
There was a leak at the base gasket, so installed new gaskets. I never opened it up or anything.. It had run, found a leak=new gaskets....fired right up....well no right up but close.. :D
Have you checked the crank bearings?  Hard to tell from your poor video, but something sounds a little funny.  That may be where a vacuum leak is also.
The bearings APPEAR to be good. good and tight
THAT'S WHAT I THINK THE NOISE IS......A RUSTY BEARING??????

A vaccum leak huh????...hmmmm...
She sure seems to be flowing good either by me or the engine running...done quickly.
I did turn the mix screw out to 2-1/2 and it wasnt AS bad, BUT she would want to shut down about 1/2? throttle.. MAybe worse under a load... Took off good ONE time, seemed to struggle afterwards. At about 6000 rpms it starts losing anything it was trying to get going..(i ain't that dam fat though... :D)...(230)

If a Batman superhero sounded THAT country... Id laugh my yankee ass off.

VACUUM LEAK!
Probably at the crank seals....Do a leak-down test!
Spray soapy water on the seals...if they are leaking...replace the bearings and the seals.
Sorry Bro! :'(

On the af18 engines I can use Picks to pull out the seals without splitting the cases. Can you do the same w/ your engine ?
I also put a second seal in backwards to avoid dirt on the first seal. Hardware store 3 bucks...

Hey batman,

Might want to double check your float level.  It could be set too low, so that as soon as it starts drawing fuel up through the carb it empties out and can't supply the main jet.  At this point, even if it looks okay, adjust it so that the float closes the needle a little later than you would expect. Trying it out can't make things any worse. :)

Video's not bad.  It gets the point across clearly, which is what counts.

Cheers!

~Josh

Were tellin' the guy to split cases, and Josh says  Look in the gas tank. Forums work when people post...

Your getting seals at the hardware??  :o

Yeah, those can be picked out as well.. That sound though, idk wth it is. ???. My 1st thought was like a "rustyISH" bearing or something which would of course would mean.....dissassemble  ::)

Suppose to be in class right now, but i'm hoping to get motivated enough to test that this evening.. it's cold, windy today.. dam, i need another red bull i guess.. :D  Block off plates are alot nicer on a leak down test vs that dam "stopper" i been using.
I may have been hoping for more ease  ::)......imagine that tho.. :D
Float would be an easy fix there  ;)  but that darn noise though.. ::)
DAM, i want MY S9 back up.  :'(  ::)

YUP! On the side of the seal there are 3 numbers. One is the ID of the seal, One is the OD of the seal, and the last is the width of the seal.
I get ALL my seal at Jackson hardware in town. They are an Ace Hardware chain. Most auto parts/small engine shops will stock them as well. Kymco is around 15 bucks per seal. Local is 3.

You will be able to feel bad bearings if you remove the plug, and stator. Any play or grit will be transmitted to the shaft as you spin it.

WOW, i gotta look in to that for dam sure.
Dam, i done forgot where i got the last zx seals....probably scootercraft... I miss those guys. :'(

From MY lil searching.... It seems that kymco pretty much uses the same seal.. the s9, zx, etc., anyway... when i looked, they all have the same part #.

The three numbers are on the side of the seal. They are spaced apart to look random but that is them.

OH, i knew that part

How do you think i was looking to replace my torn seal last time and found the s9 has the same seals...

Well, i went out and cleaned that carb again, bowl was dirty..
Re-adjusted float, cleaned carb.........still dies out....
Wont rev past 6g's.. it wanted to one time though. :D
(sat it one a board, stood beside it, burnt fkn rubber...wtf?)

Removed plug and it's wet as hell and lean looking.
no mix ring but the stem has a touch of color.. dam, it's a oem carb..
I know just a pipe cant make it that dam lean looking.(oem carb, oem airbox, just pipe.next-r)

Tried a comp test but i guess my sh**ty tester took a crap, wouldn't even register...
YES, i put the plug back in.....fired right up. it's got Some comp anyway ;D

Gonna try a leak down test after it's all apart with my $5 tester

Seals appear to be good to go..........
The only leak i can find is in the "butt plug" style  ::) plug in the exhaust..
Which goes back to all carb issues........
I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO close guys, so fkn close  >:(

Just learned that a oem a.c exhaust will NOT fit a l.c bike.....
figured for sh**'s and giggles i'd try an oem exhaust but the dam thing won't mount..
The swing arm stops it.. with some mods it would fit but i'm not cutting either

What are you using to block off the exhaust?  An expansion plug?  Is there any way to get it to seal completely?  Are you removing the pipe or plugging the end of it?  To get an accurate reading you have to eliminate ALL leaks and it needs to 6 psi pressure for 6 minutes.  Only other thing I can think of as far as leaks is that the crank bearings are bad and at higher rpms the shaft begins to wobble in the crank seals causing a leak.  ???  Do you have a timing light?  You can hook it up and make sure your spark isn't cutting out at high rpms when it cuts out.

+1 on the bearings.

...>>perk<<...

should there be any movement in the engines output shaft...in or out...up or down..??

NONE! On the tranny output a small amount of in out is normal 1/16th" or less. Up or down is worn bearings/case

Hey Batts... Did you use carb clean to blow out the passages inside the carb body? Maybe the cap is leaking air? Clogged/de laminated fuel line?
