Title: TOP speed vs. TOP box? :)
Post by: Cortez on April 02, 2012, 08:40:44 PM
Quick question guys, for any of you who put on a huge (40l+) topbox on that
fat rear end of our scoots.

How's your top speed with it?  :-\

I'm not the type who'll chase after that 1 or 2 mph at the top considering
I rarely go over 70mph, but I was a bit surprised that I couldn't get it over
81-82mph going one way on the highway, and I somehow managed 88mph
going the other way.

Trying to duck behind the windscreen did almost nothing to help and that's
when it hit me, it's probably the freakin' sail behind me, also called a 50l
SHAD topbox.

I'll try that same run tomorrow without it, but I was wondering if anyone
noticed a big difference too.

Not to mention that I got 14gr sliders in the scoot which probably don't help
matters by keeping the revs around 500 lower at those speeds compared to
stock.

I notice very little difference on mine even with the givi windshild, givi 47 L top case. I am getting ready for a trip this summer and have added a seat bag about the same size as the top case and small saddle bags. I have not done any changes to the bike other than the lights I have changed and added. One of these days I will get around to shooting some pictures and posting them. ;D

Great, looking forward to those!  :)
Your Givi windshield might be even helping with directing air over your topbox, but I have the stock windshield
which doesn't work all that well, has a lot of buffeting etc.

Imagine just what that bulky top box does to fuel consumption!  ;D ;D

Considering the last 2 tanks were at 3,8l/100km, I'm not gonna complain. :)

IMO,  the large Givi screen will have much more influence on drag than a top box.
Your body is blocking the airflo before it hits the top box.

I have a Givi screen and Bestem 45L+ top box.

Of course, but I tried 2 runs without the top box and I managed to get 1-2mph more,
but could be coincidence.

I wouldn't be surprised though if the larger wind screen with it's shape lowers the
total drag compared to hitting half of my fat ass on the scoot.

We'll see.
I'll have a bigger screen in the next 10 days probably.

With serious bikes doing 220-250 km/h, top box/no top box means 20-25 km/h difference.
Good tight jacket vs. floppy one means additional 10 km/h. Not to mention the passenger.

Yeah, been there, done that.
I had bigger difference with the wrong
jacket then with or without the topbox,
but at 35l, it wasn't that big.

No topbox/good jacket was around
218km/h, squid clothes took that down
by 10km/h or more.

Not bad for just 72hp when I think about
it now..
