Knowing that it was only 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside this morning, I still decided to make the 40 mile trip in to work this morning on my Yager. I made sure to place on layer upon layer so that I would stay warm. I swear I looked like Ralphies little brother in the movie The Christmas Story. If I had fallen over on my way into the garage, there I would've stayed until my wife and kids were able to assist me to my feet. :)
Two parts of my body took a beating on the ride in to work through the Green Mountains of Vermont - my neck and my hands. Even with my motogloves in fleece mitts with hand warmers inside, my hands felt like they were becoming so brittle from the cold that they would shatter off my arm. My slight double chin became firm from the cold, but made the chin strap feel like sand paper against my skin.
I learned a lot from this cold ride, and realized that even with all the preparation in the world you just cannot replace experience. And while it may have taken all day for my fingers to thaw out (just in time for the 40mile jaunt back home!), I was more alert when I got to
work this morning than I have ever been in my life. The frigid air replaced several pots of caffeinated coffee! :)
What type of extreme weather riding have you experienced?
What cold weather gear would you recommend?

..coldest i've ever ridden in was 18F.....17 miles, and brother, let me say...i applaud you for making it 40!!!

..i ride year round..rain or shine..but for the cold, you gotta have a good balaclava, AND a windproof neckie...
..i have those, plus my second layer's jacket has a "turtle-neck" zip_up design.....thatsa leather layer...can't beat good leather to block wind...
..as for my hands, i've tried a bunch of gloves..my Columbias serve me well....$50.00 gloves that my bro from chicago gave me...

Here in SoCal it doesn't really get that cold, but the wind chill can freeze you when riding if you don't dress to protect yourself from it.
I wear a wool undershirt and keep the lining in my Darien jacket.
I've learned to use a baklava to protect my neck from the windchill, which seriously helps a lot. Also protects against the wayward wasp/bee hits.
I wear cold weather gloves, which also cuts down on the windchill. I switch to summer gloves when it heats up.

Yep some cold rides will really expose the areas not protected. IMO the neck is hardest to cover up. Ski masks are also good for the really cold days. Then put whatever your neck guard is over that.
I have some motorcycle rain pants I ordered from amazon and they work great to block the wind on the legs. It's a pain to have to put on and take off three or more layers of pants, especially when you're late everywhere you go already :D. The motorcycle rain pants block wind and rain really well. All I need now is my jeans and the rain pants over that to cover my legs. Of course I didn't sign up for early morning classes for this reason. I feel sorry for you guys that have to ride at 6am in January :'(.
For my top half I have a nice Columbia jacket with a removable liner that is awesome.

My extreme weather ride on my Super 8 was last year's typhoon. Gusty winds, one foot flood, tree branches flying and trees falling and lots of debris and rooftop pieces flying. Had to go through lots of detours because trees were blocking the roads. Had to open up my visor due very poor visibility and get a beating of rain on my face. Fingers got the cramps and I had to remove those soaked gloves. Good thing water never seeped in my air intake, otherwise, the engine will just stop. Got so exhausted after a long ride. When I got home, half a bottle of brandy made me going again. ;D

I rode my scoots and bike (750 cc) through snow storm.
What you have just described is my daily commute during winter time. ;D
p.s. I have a friend who used to ride his 50 cc 2 stroke @ -20 F.

Winter is here also maybe 2-3 months during the year and regular temperature during winter days is around 48 F/40 F during the night.

Good tips! I never considered a balaclava. Seems obvious though! Ive since gone out and gotten myself something for my neck. What a difference! My hands are the only problem area now. Ive tried several combinations without much success. I think I may need the heated ones but I just cannot justify the cost. Id rather just pull over every twenty minutes and use my handwarmers for a couple minutes to draw the freeze out.
people are looking at me like there's something wrong with me too...lol... they just don't get it: the thrill of riding the scooter and the money saved on fuel.

Vivo, I think I would have needed the bottle of brandy BEFORE the ride in typhoon weather. You're a brave soul!

Yikes! The wind chill mustve been unbearable. Clearly, you're experienced! Id love to ride this winter but I'm just not sure yet. I know that I need to be geared up more appropriately in order to even consider it.
During the cooler days, I am the only two wheeled motored transportation on the road. Just curious where all of those tough Harley guys are! Haha

There are handle grip wind shields that can be fitted on the handle grips that keep the wind from hitting your hand -- gloved or otherwise -- directly. Other than that, a pair of gloves better suited for winter weather might be the trick. I myself have a couple pairs of gloves. One for colder weather and another for summer riding.

All of last year, I was a Harley guy. I wouldn't have ridden in this cold on that uncomfortable pile of metal. The scooter is just downright fun, regardless of temp/weather.
My cousin still owns his Harley. We did ride together a few times last year. I asked if he would want to go riding again with me this year - me on my scooter and him on his Harley. His answer? An emphatic, "NO!"
I don't understand the stigma with scooters. Even before I even considered a scooter, I viewed anyone on motorized two wheels my brothers and sisters. Harley guys/gals can have the perception that they are superior - and that they are tough.
But it's true that when the weather turns cold, the Harley guys can seem to be the first ones to put their bikes away (including me last year). I've poked at my cousin a few times that when the temps are below 40, I may only see one or two cruisers. When the temps are below 30, me and my scooter are the only two wheels on the road.
I think scooterists deserve more props than they receive. There's a negative connotation associated with scooters in the United States that seems to be from a lack of education. Not to mention, scooters don't always seem to be given their "time" through ads and such here.
Personally, I'm ready to start a scooter revolution in the US. It's much needed!

You are one of the very few that can see the light through the propaganda (bigger is better)(buy our SUV to enjoy life)(gasoline is OURS)!
I think unfortunately the Prop. has won in the US. I wouldn't mind siting on a water tower full of ammo to debate the point tho... WHO'S first on the opposing team?

I never got the scooter stigma, either. Like motorcycles, they go on two wheels, are steered with a handlebar, the throttle makes it go, etc. So it's a step-through design...some of us have bad backs and can't swing a leg over a tank constantly.

May be it's a culture thing (in general). Taiwanese prefer scoots. Thais and Malays, etc. prefer the "underbone" or cub, Americans just love the cruiser be they Harleys, Hondas, Yamahas. Americans love the mean-bad-rough-metal-evil image and the band wagon spreads like fever. Another culprit i think is Hollywood! Nobody wants to see Nicolas Cage on a flaming Kymco! lol! or Arnold Schwarzenegger wearing crocs on a Super 8 saying "I'll be back!". In the real world, it's a lot different.

Here in NC they're either called a "Mopad" or "Liqueursycle". I kinda like liqueursycle. My trunk will definitely fit a handle of rum :D. And a case between my legs! Should call it "partysycle". I like "step-through" too. Does that mean I can bring this video back?!

I fit a 12 pack, and a bag of ice in the seat. Just drilled a hole for the drain. You gotta drink fast tho. The ice lasts about an hour.

(ie: improper equipement gets a revocation for 3 yrs...a dam light bulb..)

I completely know what you mean. My body/fingers are stiff, and it takes most of the day to warm up. I've only encountered ice a couple of times though. Since riding it to work the last two weeks, the morning temps have been between 15 degrees to 27 degrees. Precipitation has been from none to rain or snow. I have been a bit frightened a couple of times, but I trust my skills - until I hit that patch of black ice, of course! :o

Since my family has been impacted by the nearly-global recession, I will save where I can. Even if that means placing myself in some completely stupid situations. Though, my insurance is top notch! :D

my Ag50 is my only form of transport, i used to have a car until i was made redundant and i could no longer afford to run it and thats when i got my scoot only £5-6 to fill up and £16 tax for a year cant complain really.

Very true - If it were only that easy :-\ Nowadays people are opting to do things illegal to make ends meet. With 3 small children, I believe I've taken the "wiser" road by just scooting to my job daily in hopes that my lottery numbers will eventually be drawn ;D

Cheesy, I know ;) Bought my first one today, and wow does it make a difference. I thought I was okay with a scarf wrapped tightly. I'll never wear anything but a balaclava from here on out on the cold days. Thanks for the advice all.

i think i may follow suit, i kinda hate the fact bees and wasps become bullits which try and drill holes in either your forehead or neck. balaclava is on the list

Just got back from an hour's ride. Damn! it's 97 degrees (F) outside! I had to maintain 40-50mph just to stay cool!

I LOVE riding here in FL. for just that reason. To cool off for a few minutes. It's been 70ish for the past week but that will all change in a few days. We have 3-4 weeks of spring, and BAM summer 100 every day for 6 months. then BAM 50 day, and 40's nite. It's like a light switch.
