I am having issues with my scoot at about 31mph it is like the belt has slack and is slapping around in there it makes brr sound and then slows a bit from the friction and I cant get it to fight through it. I assumed the belt stretched and that was the underlying issue but when I ordered a new one and took off the old one they are the same size. I then was examining the cluch/pulley in the back and realized it is not working properly I am wondering if the issue that I have is stemming from this pulley not opening and closing properly it kinda sticks and the little seal rings that are on the center seem to have failed at some point. I am thinking of just replacing it and hoping that it will fix it. Have any of y'all had anything similar happen with your scoots and does this make sense?
Thanks Y'all
Brian.

I also have been haveing the same problem but go to find out mine was just to get bigger rollers to copesate for the vareator wearing down. my clutch is working ok I took just the clutch in to a shop and they said its just fine should get a another year or so out of it. so just for me to know everything is new im going to order the whole clutch kit . you get the clutch and rollers and the vareator all at the same time that way I well know its all good.just need to safe some coin for this. good luck with your scoot .take your clutch in to a shope and have theam look at it. it might be better you also to get the whole kit my scoots a 07 and stell stock parts so its just time to repair things wear out.
-
I also feel that my clutch is still good, my issue is with the rear pully on the other side of the spring than the clutch where it slided in and out at sort of an angle to cause the pulley to open and close letting the belt ride differently. I think that is the culprit. I think I will try to order another pulley and variator aswell to be sure. what would you guys say is the best variator on the market with out breaking the bank too baddly. trying to keep it at 100 or under.
Thanks again Y'all,
Brian.

monsterscooterparts.com as some but there a little over 100.00 not going to find much cheaper.

I had a torsion controller go bad, and it is as you described. Once it gets to the part where it hangs up it will "stick" the belt, and try to double it over on itself. This could lead to a rear wheel lock up... Replace the torque drive. I would stay OEM on this part. The after market cheapo's are just that CHEAP!
-
x2 oem parts are better all around if your bocket book well let you.or if you have a budget controler in the house lol.
-
My rear pulley got stuck as well a few years ago.
I just took it apart, put some grease in the torquedriver (not too much, the seals couldn't keep it inside) and it has been fine ever since.
(I also put a little (!) extra grease in the space between the bearings every thousand miles or so. There's a small hole between that space and the torquedriver, the place where the grease eventually has to do its job, so you don't have to disassemble the whole unit every time..)
-
I would stay OEM on this part. The after market cheapo's are just that CHEAP!
..there are also some that have a restrictive hump at the i.d. of the pulleys...like the one in the top pic...
-
thanks a TON guys this is the conformatinon that I was looking for. Parts ordered and will be in on tuesday, now to order the variator. Thanks again y'all are the best.
-
Well I'm at a loss for what to do. I replaced the rear pully, variator, belt, and boss to all new parts. It is still doing the binding thing it like bbrrrrr and decererates, I have no clue what to do next. I had in the new parts and with the heavier weights "9 gram" weights it wasnt as back but acceleration was less that satifactory and still unable to ride practically with it binding. So I put in 7 gram weights I had in old varitor and it was WAY worst. It isn't even ridable at this point. FML. If anyone has any idea I would love to hear. thanks for the read guys.

I wonder if this could be a transmission/gear problem have you checked the oil in there lately.....
-
Kisbee, I just had the bottom of the motor and cam replaced last fall, parts were looked at and gear oil replaced. I know the problem is much worst with the 7gr weights than with the 9gr with the 9gr I can baby it up to 32mph.. when runnin good it can hit 48. The problem originally came up when I would go from slowing down to getting back on the throttle too quickly, but for a while it had been happening with regular acceleration.
-
The problem could be starting in the Var. If the var cant close the torque drive cant open. There are two bosses that fit your scoot. You need the 28mm one. The 32mm will stop the var before it closes as the ramp runs out before top gear. Try measuring the boss.
What crank did you install (part #). Some aftermarket cranks have a longer shaft that will move the face away too.
-
..the oem boss length is 38mm..
..that should work well with any variator setup, except that 7 gram rollers is likeely to bog your scoot down, unless you have some serious air increases,,,
...try some 5grms...
-
dont have the part number on the crank, ordered it from a company that sold it as oem. with the weights im thinking about going bigger not smaller. even with 9 grams im flying off the line and up to 40 "speedo" in no time. I noticed with the heavier wieghts that the problem occered much latter and less frequently, but once the scooter warms up the problem becomes more frequent again. so as far as weights go no where but up. Im thinking about putting in the white tortion spring in to see if that helps but still unsure.
-
and with is being a problem of the variator not closing so that the torque drive not opening, is there a test that I could do to confirm this??
-
Use a fat magic marker to draw some stripes from the shaft to the pulley edge on both pulleys (front/rear). Ride it for a mile or so, and look for the stripes. It is the easiest way I know to verify full travel. A stiffer contra spring is always better than OEM.
-
Do yall have any tips for getting that large nut off the rear pulley? I wanted to try the new torsion spring but nut is stuck.
Thanks guys,
Brian.

Chinese scooter compression spring change 50 cc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxphUXeTwRY#ws)
Or you can jam the nut in a vise, and twist the clutch. There are alot of ghetto vids on utube for this
-
lol, the vice is what i tried but could get it to budge. I'll give the screw driver trick a try next i guess.

nice rig wordslinger, wish i still worked at a fab shop i could whip one right up.. well I havent been able to get that nut loose I'm thinking about renting a socket from auto zone so I can use my impact to break it loose. but I noticed it dosent do this binding when the scoot is cold, and when the weather is cold i can baby it so it dosent do it. I checked this on a 8 mile ride to a friends and hit over 50 on the speedo befor i ran out of road with more motor left. The more I work on this scooter the less I feel I know.

We ALL been there. About a month ago I was trading out the contra spring, and noticed the back of the clutch has wear marks where it has been STOPPING the torque drive from fully opening. 3mm wasted! This is the delta that has been on the ZX for 4 years! I compared it to the OEM clutch, and found the oem is beveled to avoid this. I made a 3mm shim to fix it, and gained 2-3mph (right before melting the umpteenith piston). So even when you Think you got it nailed... something new humbles you.
For all you guys running after market clutches, I strongly suggest removing the contra spring, and checking for interference on the Torque drive pulley. There may be 2-3 mph in it for you as a gift from Z.

and noticed the back of the clutch has wear marks where it has been STOPPING the torque drive from fully opening
..ditto bro!...oem torque driver and driven pulley anda malossi delta clutch!!
-
Pull the spring, and see if yours hit. I guess they must as the oem clutch is beveled, and the Malossi is not.
-
Forgot to mention the Shim just puts the clutch deeper in the bell, and away from the Torque drive. Belt alignment is not affected
-
..yeah, i shimmed it...wow...and it was about a month ago or so when i found that....

..i also got that spring kit..with the bearings that came with my motorio...
..wondering about trying that out somewhere...
..just not sure of the contra rating...

That kit you speak of.....
That spring is FKN stiff... I had it in the z for a bit but didn't tune, went back to yellow.
It's fkn stiff dude... W/O the bearings.... :D

..i do still have th MHR Malossi 2000 red...
..never outta th plastic....

The red "race" springs are just that. If you want long cvt life don't use them. I have to to control torque, but wound up at 8.5gr Dr pulley rollers, and wear out belts, at an alarming rate. Three used whatever brands, one oem Bando, one malossi, and I'm on a new Malossi in the mail right now. This is all in 3-4 months. If you can get away with a 1500 use it instead. for me 1500 hits top gear at about 15mph. the red/2000 gets to 35ish before top gear.
The torsion controller is great tho. It smooths out the torque drive so much that you don't even feel it. Even the 10 buck Malossi plastic one is great. I would never go without it again.
-
..i do still have th MHR Malossi 2000 red...
IMO, that goldish colored spring is stiffer ....alot
-
Wish i coulda gotten one of those red springs... :D
-
..i bout it for trials in the...much delayed...75cc ppl kitting...
...don't think anything else i have would benefit from it...
-
...neh.neh.nehhhh...i did get the last one around, at the time...
-
at the time...
Shhhiiittt, it's STILL that time in the warehouse it seems....
-
Louie at http://www.spi-parts.com/ (http://www.spi-parts.com/) has them. Along w/ the torsion controller. Try the one you have but if it is even STIFFER I would save it for a 2t Drag bike, and not the street. Maybe someone on Scoot invasion would trade you for a better one for you.

I tried running a red 2000 spring a while ago and couldnt get it to work out at all. My top speed went to pot and even on 7.5g rollers i struggled to get it over 35mph. I got a hill i use to test run on that i get up at 29-31mph on my 1500 spring and 5.5g rollers, on the red spring i dropped to 20-ishmph on all roller weights i tried ???

..yeah, itd NEVER work onna a50, i'm sure...

..gotta have a strong, high-revving 2t for that spring...
