I picked up a people 50 that's missing the ignition key, and has been diagnosed the the stator "magneto" needs to be replaced.
Two questions:
I was told I cannot remove the stator at home because a flywheel is needed which i don't have, true??
Any suggestions where to buy the ignition key/switch??

Not sure about the stator. Good luck :)

The flywheel is over the stator..... YEp, you have a flywheel..
you mean the puller... A cheap steering wheel puller does work. Used it many times to remove mine.
Got a actual flywheel tool now though

^Man i feel like a dumb ass for paying that much now, im guessing there's no difference between the generic and the actual kymco :-\
So i bailed on fixing it myself and took my people to the shop yesterday. So far I've paid 125 for the bike which was almost completely complete and still has compression (20,000 km on her i believe), I've bought the key lock for 60, battery for 30, stator for 25, and two front body panels for 70. Total 310 i'm in so far.
I'm praying the labor does not kill my budget to put the stuff together and a good tune up. I'll be posting before and after pics soon!

They're not all the same. I ordered a lock set for my ZX and I had to make it work. In the picture it looked Identical. The ignition lock cylinder was shorter on the one I ordered. Like I said I made it work. The glove box lock didn't want to work at all. I made that work too but I'm not happy with the way it locks. I can pull it open without unlocking it. The seat lock was the only one that actually fit perfect.

Thanks for the info guys. ill be posting pics of my people once shes back from the shop

hey wordslinger, i had a mechanic who owns his own scooter shop, so i trusted his word. What makes you say this though? hope the shop doesn't put to big a dent in my wallet.
-
...if you trust him, that's cool...we have 3 shops in town that'll rob u blind, and lead you astray...
-
yeah i hear that, im hoping the mechanic was right, the guy i bought it from said it was the "magneto" also, which im guessing is another name for the stator ???
-
The only part of the stator that actually interfaces directly with the ignition system is the pickup coil - that little black box with the blue and yellow wire coming out of it.
If you measure resitance between that wire, and the frame that the pickup coil bolts to, you should see something like 125-160 ohms. It should be able to make an LED test light flash as you spin the engine over.
The "magneto" is not the stator. That's the flywheel, which has magnets built into it, thus the name "Magneto". I've seen two fail. Ever. None of them on Kymco.
Anyway, I concur with the others here... if you end up doing the job yourself, there's plenty of help around. Keep us posted!
