HI guys! I own a 09 Xciting 500 just bought it this january, have 1,5++ miles on it. inspected the tires today and noticed the rear tire looks like it would last just for another 1,500-2,000miles. Is it normal to just get 4,000miles on the stock maxxis tires?

It's probably related to how you ride. I couldn't find the posts again, but I have seen figures from 4,500 miles to 9,000 miles. I don't have enough miles to know yet myself. How about it folks, what mileage are we getting on the tires and has anyone tried other brands.

Personally i dont think it has something to do with my driving style, i have a friend with an 06 or 07 x500, rider around 140-160lbs. Mileage on his x500 is just 6,200 miles but he already changed rear tires 3x and front tire just once.

wow 5,000 miles on a single tire! what brand of tires are installed? here standard are maxxis.
maybe it could be the climate hear??? its so hot and humid here!

Changed my stock rear tires at 10,500miles, and front about 1k later. Rear now is Avon & front is Michelin. I really like the way the Michelin handles, would have got Michelin for rear, but dealer was out at time.
My '07 X500 has 16,500, and is just over a year old. I ride a lot with gear as she is my majore mode of transport. I have a top-case plus saddlebags and a barrel bag when really loaded.
I think other factors that would affect is how accurate one keeps tire pressure, and how tight one takes the corners. My mechanic said my tires would have lasted a little longer except for the loads.

I followed what the manual said, 29psi front and 36psi at the back.

Bongoman, what pressure do you run in your tires? BTW I am curious to see what wear you get from the Avon. A friend of mine get extraordinary wear out of the Avon venom tires on his Goldwing. Anyhow I have found that proper tire pressure is a key to good tire wear. I usually run right at max load pressure a couple of pounds over on rear. A little harder ride but handles great and seems to wear better.

Tire wears first indicator is when it the tire begins to square off.. Handling becomes compromised..Time to change
I agree with you on the Avons..I have had kenda,Michelin gold star and Avon on this scooter..Tracking ,wet weather and overall wear and lack of cupping ,Avon's performance has exceed the other two brands by a wide margin..27000km of :)

As to tire pressure, I now run 34psi in front and 35psi in rear. Stiff ride, good handling. Most of the time, I leave the rear shock setting at 3. With a load of about 60#, I put it on 4 and it takes the twisty hilly roads around central Texas like there's a groove. Smooth and comfortable.
I do a lot of hiway riding, from Austin to San Antonio, and lots of hill country as well as open road, like to Houston and even New Orleans. I am contemplating a tour from Texas to northern California this summer.
I do like the combination of Avon rear and Michelin front, but then this is the first time I've tried these two. Definitely better than the stock ones. At 10,500 my stock rear had been shot for a couple of thousand miles, just couldn't afford a new one.
've already put about 8,000 on the rear Avon, and it still looks pretty good. Still handles and rides well.

I have 1100 miles on my 09 xciting 500ri on the 09 the stock tire are Kenda so far they still look good but thinking of putting on a 160-60-14 on the rear any thoughts thanks

nbhill, you will not get anything with wider tire on the rear. The ones you have now are more than adequate.
Just a lot of trouble for nothing.
p.s. Your scooter has wider tire than 130 hp motorcycle had in 70`s...

axy the reason I was thinking of the 160-60-14 there are more tires to pic from the 150-70-14 as far as I can tell the 160-60-14 will be .4 inch's wider and .1 inch taller thanks for your input

Maxxis and kenda tires are low quality. If anyone planing to buy new tires I can suggest Pirelli diablo scooter. I have them on my xciting 250 and I can tell that they are very good performance tires! It is not just about milege but riding in curves, easier to drive and braking. Dimensions that they produce are the same. 150/70-14 for rear and 120/70-15 for front. Placing 160/60-14 as a rear tire will reduce top speed.

I am quite satisfied with OEM Kendas on People S250, including handling on wet and slippery road.

I can only tell that if You try pirelli diablo scooter You will realize what I am talking about. Kendas are like plastic. You can not even compare kenda, maxxis with pirelli or bridgestone. I prefer pirelli because diablo scooter series are more round.

I have never driven a scooter with Pirelli Diablo so really cannot compare. Yet, I am a person that drives 365 days in a year, including winter, heavy rain, night, snow and even ice a few times and it is my opinion that Kenda tire I have on People 250 S is an average touring tire.
Also, I prefer to compare models of tires, not manufacturers and critical for me is how the tire behaves on slippery road and in heavy rain (every day on my way to work I have to cover 13 kms of downhill/uphill twisty and slippery road with bad irrigation and literally rivers of water running downstream so it is crucial for me to have tires with good rain-handling - this is also why I replace tires when they are at most half way through).
OEM tire on Agility 125 is also quite good but it is a shame I cannot remember the brand (it is not Kenda).

I hear they were exporting tires to USA too and have also some products in the sports range. I recommend those tires, provided they can be purchased in your country(ies).

I throw "Heidenau" into the game.
A small saxony company specialized in in tires for scooters up to medium motorcycles. Nothing for >200kph, nothing for "cars on 2 wheels".
In Heidenaus field of activity the german scooter drivers consider them beeing superior even to Michelin or Bridgestone.
Very expensive, but best grip and durability.
I threw away the Maxxis in the early beginning, they where just unsafe on cold wet roads.
Now I went about 13000km with Heidenau K64 rear (+ K66 front) and they still look good for at least another 10000km.

Notice that they have also slicks for scooters.
Right now I have OEM Kenda on People 250S and Sava MC 16 on NRG 50 cc and I had Monsum on my Beverly 200.
You will notice that "big" manufacturers usually put as OEM tires "big names". Btw. Suzuki and Yamaha also sometimes use Dunlop, Metzeler and some other tires.
p.s. Trivia: Sava is a river that goes through Slovenia and Croatia.

I am from montenegro and they are my neighbours. Sava also goes trough serbia. I dont know why do You like so much OEM products. You want to tell me that sava is better tire than michelin, bridgestrone and pirelli??? Here in montenegro, no one is buying sava. Also do
You expect from savatech to tell You that their tires are bad? ;-) Ask someone for a real xperience. I have a friend with the same opinion as Yours and he is fanatic (very dynamic driver) for motobikes but he was on the ground, just because of that type tires, for 3 times so far. If You like so much that tires than good luck. ;-)

I would not say that your friend fell off the scooter just because of tires. Anyway, even if he did, maybe he should have learned the first time and not retry twice more.
Maybe in Montenegro nobody is buying them but where I live they are highly regarded.
Btw. I can name several Pirelli tire models that are pure rubbish. Ditto for Michelin and Bridgestone for example.

A dobar si. Paaa... dinamicno. :D Uzmi u obzir da je to manji tocak nego sto ima GSXR i da ce lakse proklizati. Ma sve ok samo, brate, SAVA, KENDA, MAXXIS ... pa dje nadje 3 najgora brenda za gume? To x puta ljudi bace kad kupe nov skuter. :D Da se ne ljute drugi pa dalje da pisemo en.

changed both front and rear tire this january. front tire almost 20% left with just 3,500km plus :o :o rear with 50% left. both are Pireli GTS

my EOM Kenda rear tyre is being replaced at 24000klm as it is breaking up at each tread all around the circumference A Pirelli Pilot Sport is going on ;D

An interesting fact about the Kenda, The compound is not fuel proof! They swell like baloons form the petrolium on the road surface alone. Mine also was self destructing after just a couple hundred miles. It developed a bounce within 60-80miles, and just grew worse.

My '07 Xciting had about 4000 miles on it when I bought it and the rear tire was just about worn out. Maxxis on front and rear. I've put another 1000 miles on it and now it's really ready to replace. From the looks of the rim, it's been off at least once, possibly to repair a puncture?
Have looked at a number of tires online, particularly at Motorcycle Superstore. I'm actually thinking of trying the Shinko SR 568R rear and the SR 567F front tires since they're quite inexpensive. $41.99 and $35.99 with free shipping for a total of about 78 bucks for both.
Any opinions anyone?

I used to run shinko's on a Kz/400. I used it more like an enduro than a street bike but the Shinkos were fine for me. This was also 25 years ago ! Bike Bandit has a review section under each tire they sell. The reviews do not appear to be eddited as there are many negative comments on most of the brands. It may help to brouse thru their site, and get even more feedback. To me Quality outweighs price every time. Although I do buy store brand Mayonaise. Will try Shinko on my next change, if i could find a shop that sells that here. It is hard to find tires the size for x500 here there are only 3 store that i know and they only have pireli gts, diablo and metzeler.

I just installed the Pirelli Diablos and love them handle great stop great. I only gave 210 for them but motorcycle_superstore.com has them for 150 shipped
