Title: Peet's new toy
Post by: Peters on March 03, 2012, 10:04:08 AM
Well, here it is. She's beat up and clearly never known love. 125 Bucks

From what I can tell the engine still wants to live. I haven't put my compression tester to it, but from the feel of the kicker there's something there. Real nice guy, but clearly not mechanically inclined. Just what I was looking for ;D. He said some thugs stole it at some point and ripped the front plastic off breaking whatever got in they're way. He got it back, replaced the ignition, and ran it for a month or two before it just stopped running. He kept saying "I don't know if it just needs a spark plug or what". He said it's been sitting for about 5 months, but I wouldn't doubt it was longer than that.

I'll have to see what kind of life is left in the engine. I'm hoping all it will take is a good fuel system cleaning. If so I'll be replacing some plastics and give her a good coat of paint.

With those miles, I'd be shocked if your engine wasn't tip-top.  Clean the carb and replace the fuel lines/filter, and you'll probably want to drain all the old fuel out.  If it's got good spark it should fire right up.  Enjoy it. :)  In my opinion, the ZX is one of the more comfortable 50cc scooters to ride.

Best,

~Josh

AWESOME find.... Great choice peters..
Yeah, those miles aren't a thing. Mine had 23,000 when i built it and i rode it daily; I just wanted to build.. :D
HINT... There are alot of parts for the z on ebay atm. Someone stipped it and is selling everything. Some of the prices he has are ok, some are insane(since NEW from kymco is cheaper than he is asking on a few pieces).
I love the zx.....

Maybe offer a fair price on a "package deal" for some bits. If there is a fiberglass shop anywhere near you repairs may be a cheap option too. The entire rear section can be glassed into one piece, and held in with the seat bucket. That make all kins of thing easier. Takes about 30 seconds to remove it for access. (2 bolts, and 2 nuts for the seat pan). Check all the de-restriction bits too.
Congrats on the price! You could sell it today for 300.00

Maybe it's just me but I just paid more for a blown engine! Very happy too I might add!

Thanks, i already had plans to visit my friend in Greenville, SC Friday. So I basically had to throw it in the garage and hit the road. I literally just had just enough time to snap some pics and throw it next to the people. I'm itching to get back home tomorrow and dig into it. I'll definitely keep you guys updated. Thanks again for all the tips and advice.

thebatman... I did an eBay search but only found a few body parts. What do you search for? Post a link if it's not too much trouble. Yeah I found some OEM parts at not a bad price. I wonder if I could get them unpainted and save money.

zombie... You're talking about making new fiberglass body parts or repairing the old ones?
Title: Re: Peet's new toy
Post by: zombie on March 04, 2012, 02:13:49 AM
Repairing them. The reason I brought up glassing the whole back shell together is most of your tabs are probaly missing, and the whole thing will rattle, and be a general pain in the arse. Heres the one piece deal.

I'll see if i can get the link. I think i had just searched Kymco.
From my experiance with having to buy front plastic from Kymco.... NO, it will be painted with decals from kymco, BUT you do get to pick the color.  ::) :D

It looked like in the pics that your panels weren't absolutely destoyed or anything and very usable.(maybe the H.L cover needs another?) (i did see a headlight cover panel on ebay, it was/is red)

Old gasoline

5 months my ass!

Gas tank has some minimal rust in the bottom. Anybody know of a good cleaner? I don't think it needs a liner just a good cleaning.

138 psi of compression

HOLY sh**!!!!!!  :o  :o :o :o :o :o

That is F'N NASTY!!!!
If that was in the tank, i can just imagine how corroded the carb is.  :-X :'(    (i see some "Sea-Foam" coming into your life.  ;))
(THAT carb may need some "chem-dip". ;D)
I would just clean the tank real well, 2-3x FOR SURE.. I have found that pouring a touch of gas in the tank and left to sit, the gas will break some of the rust/debris out, then wash again. I don't have that spotless tank ppl want but it works just fine.

It seems the link you found may be some dam good stuff. Sounds great anyway. ;) Maybe Z will chime back in on that since he is a boat/marina man. (i had never even heard of it till now.... I always had to use "Naval Jelly" to remove rust. ::))

www.ospho.com/directions.htm (http://www.ospho.com/directions.htm)   This product is cheap, and sold at most paint suppliers as well as home centers. I start with Muriatic acid (brick wash) It is about 4 bucks. STRIP the tank of all its components, and pour the acid in. Just about a cup. (WARNING) This stuff will put you in the hospital if breathed. Rubber gloves are a MUST. Swish it around for 45-60 seconds, and repeat the process 2-3 times. Rinse with a garden hose for a minute or two, and blow the tank dry with compressed air. That is when you repeat the process with Ospho.
OR you can buy a new tank. I saw one on ebay about 2 weeks ago for 45 bucks.
sometimes the rust has eaten all the metal in the bottom leaving a layer of rust covered metal that the acid will eat thru. That will show you need a new one. If you simply add the rust converter you will never know till it ruptures, and leaks on a hot engine.
Sooooo New tank or acid wash first.    (2 cents)

Meant to say rust covered paint. You will get a hole if this is the case

Another ps...
This IS caused by Ethanol attracting water. The water even though emulsified (think thats the word) still is heavier than gas and does its dirty work on the bottom. 5 months is believable because the shelf life of oxygenated fuel is 3 months in the BEST of conditions.

Suck on that "Flat Earth'ers"

Surprisingly the carb only had a little corrosion just in the bottom of the bowl... thankfully. Not rust but deposits. It was the first thing I went through. Took some carb cleaner to remove gum and gunk. I'm sure I can get the rest out.

Let me put these pics of the inside of the tank on here too.

I had to pull out the sending unit and take it out in daylight to get good pictures. You're welcome to use them in your arsenal zombie :).
P.S. I did soak some fresh gas in there last night. Drained it, and took these pics today.

Anyway, as you can see it's not too bad. I don't know if acid is necessary ???

Yeah that Rusteco stuff seems great. Unfortunately it's $50 a gallon and $20 to ship. I wonder if they have smaller bottles. Again I don't know that's necessary either.

OSPHO www.ospho.com/ (http://www.ospho.com/) Get it local for about 10 bucks a galoon======savings. (yes I said Galooooon) Eth. is good for some things.
The tank is good enough to not need acid, and thank you for the ammo! My hands kinda hurt from beating that horse tho!

Cool, I'll pick up a galooon,  :D, tomorrow. ;)

What kind of prep do I need to do?

I plan to shake some star washers around in there after I get done soaking with WD40 to remove as much rust as I can. I know it says you don't need to. What can I say, I'm stubborn.

Will alcohol or paint thinner be best remove any traces of gasoline and WD40? Maybe I should use what's in your mason jar zombie :D

Acetone works gREAT for cleaning out residual chemicals. A quart is around six bucks at the hardware store, and it leaves NO residue. Your wife can use the rest for nail polish remover. (that's what it is)

WOW 50.00 huh! I order it commercially from House of Color in Tallahasse Florida. I pay 8 bucks.  Here's a link to quarts w/ free shipping. The quart will do about 10 tanks. You can pour it back into the container too. It is extremely stable, and will not contaminate the unused bit as long as the tank was CLEAN.

The pic doesn't do it justice but believe me it's much better.

All it took was Liquid Wrench, about 30 sheet rock screws, 5 beers, and an hour and a half of shaking(5 minutes of shaking then 10 minutes of drinking beer. Repeat).

SWEET! I'm gonna go do mine right now. Think I'll skip the screws tho, and maybe the shaking part. With Eth. gas tho it will return QUICKLY unless it is sealed or converted. It's not just being in the tank but more from sitting undisturbed. If you ride every day it should be ok... Till u lay it up for a month or more.

Right

I mostly just wanna get it running and find out what kind of money I need to put into this thing. As long as I can get the loose crap out of the tank and get it running. Don't know why it stopped running in the first place yet. I went ahead and ordered a new lock set. The thief FUBAR'ed the ignition and seat lock. Guy I bought it from just disconnected the battery when he parked it after that. The last thing I want is the cops hassling me.

Work's picking back up again but payday is 2 weeks away :(. I'll probably go ahead and order the Ospho when these jobs hit my bank account ;D

Don't know why it stopped running in the first place yet.

I am guessing you didn't look at the pictures you posted of the fuel then...
Has to be 5% or better absorbed water.
Title: Re: Peet's new toy
Post by: Peters on March 09, 2012, 03:57:38 AM
The guy told me it stopped running and he didn't know why. The gas wasn't (that) bad when he parked it.

Although, by reasonable assumption. It only has what, 6800 on the odo and is 12 years old. Avrg. 567 miles/kms a year(notes below). It's definitely sat for months or years before. I wouldn't doubt it was a fuel problem.

I read what you said about the DOT. I could have sworn I measured my people and it read kms not miles  :-\. Not the point  ;). I'll do it again cause I'd like to know for sure. I'm stubborn remember.

The point(finally): I just don't know what is wrong with it.

I've heard from you guys the cdi likes to go out in these things. Can't rule that out.
Title: Re: Peet's new toy
Post by: zombie on March 09, 2012, 06:02:54 AM
The most common problem is fouled spark plugs. That will lead to sitting, and finally clogged jest in the carb. Electrics do go bad but not so often. I'm looking up the laws on odo's now

She lives!!! ;D ;D ;D

Got it put together enough to see if I could get it started. Kicked it about 20-25 times and was about to give up when I heard a cough. Next kick she fired right up. Runs great. I let it idle for about 10 minutes. Shut it off and went back out there about 2 hours later. She started first kick! I only brought a little bit of oil with me so I didn't want to run it too long. I have a video and will post it in a little while. Should I post it here or start a new thread?

I have to say I really want to change the headlight setup. Way too 90s. That universal LED fairing on partsforscooters looks really cool. I'd like to have it look seamless though. Or maybe naked bars is the way to go. Just thinking out loud here. I'm excited now ;D ;D ;D

Finally had the time to do some work on the ZX today.

Turns out it was a loose wire all along! :D :D

I kept thinking there was still crap in the tank and lines. I bought new fuel lines, fuel filter, and a fuel valve. Installed all of it and cleaned the carb.

Got it started, and I cut it off to put the rest together. Got everything tightened, went to start it and it would just sputter and die. Took the carb apart again cleaned it. Nothing. I even thought it was the cheap fuel filter at one point.

I had the dead ass battery hooked up to it. I disconnected it and it started right up! So I thought the battery was F'ed up.

I take it for a ride and it runs great after some new sliders and rollers in the variator. I take it for a long ride. Havin a blast! ;D ;D ;D

I go down this really bumpy road and it starts cutting in and out. So I reach down and start messing with the wiring(I have none of the rear plastics on at this point) and it starts going again. Hit some more bumps, and it starts cutting out. Reach down and grab the wires and it's good again. After carefully riding back home. I start playing with the wires. I think I've found the culprit. Going back down to the shop, in a few, to work on it some more.

Definitely gonna fix that stupid rev limiter too. This thing wants to do much more than 38mph!

The Technigas Next R is a great match for an OEM jug. Any 1500 contra spring, and 5-10 steps bigger on the main jet plus two bigger on the pilot will have you cruising at 45-50. Right around 200.00 for everything, and reliable.

Cynthia at Scooter Alley just got 10 Scorpion pipes out of customs Honolulu. The pipe is 250.00 I don't know the shipping yet but maybe two would save a few bucks. They are cleared to be released on Monday so think fast... Could ship them both to your and I'll forward a ups label for mine.
The only reason I say this is cause the only person I know that has one paid 85 bucks for delivery.

Man... sounds like a great deal! I just don't have the money right now. I really appreciate the offer though. :)
