any thoughts on where I can get one, besides the dealer who has to order every stupid part I need

I dont know if Kymco sells a repair kit. You can buy a new one for $70.00 which is not to bad, or just keep using the kick start.

I found a local guy who could of rebuilt it (if the magnets were not broke) for 50.00

I worked for about 3 years for a real alternator/starter rebuilder/remanufacturer. About the only thing that goes wrong with Japanese built starters is the solenoid contacts wear out. The other possibilities are:
- The brushes wear out. They can be replaced. You just start with a larger set and grind them to fit.
- The commutator wears out. It can be turned on a lathe.
- The insulation on the field windings fails. That can be fixed cheaply, parts wise, but it's labor intensive.
$50 sounds like a bargain. How was your starter behaving before it failed?

it would click and get extremely hot, well it was that way when I bought it >:(
