Title: What's Your Favorite Scooter Moment?
Post by: OldGuy on February 11, 2009, 04:53:17 PM
Before retirement I was working the evening shift and riding a 50cc Honda Elite. I would get off at about 1:00 am. One all to short stretch of road was out in the country. It was a one lane blacktop through rolling hills, with no traffic.

It was just me, the black sky overhead filled with stars, the headlight cutting a short swath through the night, the lonely cry of the night birds and my scooter under me smoothly beating out the miles. I used to feel as if I could happily spend eternity in that moment.

That ride exists only in my memory now. Civilization has come to that road in the form of security lights wiping out the stars and a Hispanic night club creating traffic that wasn't there before. >:(

That's my moment. What's yours?

Pulling away from my buddy and his HOG...  He has a ton more top end, but I think he sh** himself when I left him behind...

My favorite so far has got to be the largest club meet we've ever had.  Over 40 people and scooters were there, along with news crews and everything!   A lady from the news paper even interviewed me at the next Scoot-In because I founded the club.  It is really neat to be a part of something big like that.  This picture only shows some of the bikes and people from that event:

In February 1999 I bought Peugeot Zenith, 50 cc, my first scooter.

That summer, I drove from Croatia, through Slovenia to Italy and back, all in one day, on 10" tires. :)

There are also some other odd stories... considering I drive the scooter 365 days/yr one memorable moment was driving back home from work in the evening when the snow suddenly started... I had to park 1 mile away from the house because the snow was so deep I could not even move anymore... so I just parked it in the snow at the side of the road and walked away, came back to pick it up in two days when the snow melted.

Also, once I was driving home (again from work), it was raining, and it was around freezing, I was going uphill and suddenly, the water started turning into ice... so I was all over the road, but managed to stay on the scooter. The next 5-6 miles I was driving on icy road, while the traffic was completely stopped, the cars could not move (they could not go uphill, and especially not downhill), the buses clogged the road etc.

I had between 2003 and 2005 Piaggio NRG 50 cc LC "extreme", that had lots of mods on it... it was in fact 72 cc, with Leo Vince exhaust, altered carb etc... it was doing 115+ km/h according to speedo and there was a lot of funny looks from the cagers while overtaking them...  ;D

Once I was on my Kawasaki ZR-7S when the snow started, but I was lucky enough to come home before it started piling up...

 ;D ;D :P

axy, Dude, you rock.  ;D

Back in the mid 60's while in college a buddy and I wanted to ride so bad...  and were so broke.  We found an old Cushman motor scooter frame in a junk yard they gave it to us.  It had the frame, a seat and two wheels.  It was mostly there but no engine or drive train. (or lights, it did have a brake on the rear wheel)  We mounted what I think was an old Wisconsin hay bailer motor we pulled off a junk bailer on my buddies dad's farm.  With a go kart clutch and a jack shaft drive pulley the guys at the trade school made for us we got it all put together.  It actually worked and we rode the wheels off of it on the back roads around Western Kentucky University (Western Ky State College at that time).  That was soooo much fun and I shall never forget those moments even though I have had many bikes and scooters over the years.  We see each other every now and then and always recall that old piece of junk and what fun it was and the satisfaction when it actually started and worked.  Ride every chance you get, now that I think about it, just about every time I get on the scoot or the bike it's one of my favorite moments. ;D

Really enjoy riding rural roads.   The ability to go anywhere and experience whatever I choose.  At a nice enjoyable lazy pace...

Is that Michael in the tiedied shirt? :P  Did he still have his Zuma then, or am I off?

Lots of the GR guys are members on the Scooter Invasion forum.  One of our local club members just moved up to Grand Rapids.  His name is Kirk, and he rides a white People 50.  Cool guy! :)

I think Mikal was already on his SR 50 at that time, but I could be wrong.  Hopefully Kirk hits us up and joins up for some rides and barley pops!  We need more Kymco's!!  That's my Wine People 150 in the front of picture 1.  We have I think 1 People 50, 1 People S 50, and a couple of Super 9's.  I've seen you on our forum once or twice as well!!
 :)
