Title: Which brand of oil do you use?
Post by: Oldscoot on December 16, 2011, 08:33:04 PM
I own a 2012 People 300i and believe the motor is the same as in the DT.  If I recall correctly the owner's manual calls for 5x50 synthetic.  For a liquid-cooled engine I am wondering why 50 weight would be necessary - but I tend to follow the manual.  Where can I buy this oil in the U.S.?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Kymco recommends their 5w-50 for all of their bikes (as far as I know).  I use Mobil 1 0w-40 synthetic (available at Wal-Mart, Autozone...).  I don't know of anyone but the Kymco dealer that will sell you 5w-50.

My Kymco dealer uses 10W40 in every thing they service. I broke my 250 in on Rotella 15W40. They also have a synthetic 5W40 that many people use. Since break in I am using Mobil 1 4T 10W40 synthetic motorcycle oil with good results.

Mobile one 15/50 is all I have used for years in all bikes and cars/trucks. Never a break down. All though my trucks head gasket went at 325,000 :-*

My caddie wants only Mobil-1.  It even says it on the oil fill cap.  So, if it's good enough for the caddie, it's good enough for my bike.

I use Yamalube. Although this is just on a trial basis. So far, so good. I think any good brand will do as long as it meets or exceeds JASO-MB rating. JASO-MA are for wet clutch bikes.

I use the Honda Pro synthetic / petroleum blend 10w-40. I have about 13,000 miles on my 09 People s200 and she seems very happy with this oil.

Both Yamalube and the Honda Pro oils are formulated for wet clutch engines which you don't have.  It doesn't make them bad oils - but you are paying extra for a formulation to keep clutch plates from slipping that you don't need.  The dry clutch oil formulas focus more on fuel economy with friction modifiers that can't be used with a wet clutch.  They both provide extremely similar engine protection - and you may not notice a difference in mpg - but why use an oil formulated for something that you don't have?

I've been getting the Honda oil for my People s200 for two reasons: 1) I live in a small town and don't have much choice byond our Honda dealer. 2) when talking to there tech guy, he told me this is the oil they recomend for there (sintrifical clutch, GY6) scooters (such as the Elite or Metrapolitan). I figure if the Honda dealer is putting Honda Pro in there new scooters, it must be OK. Am I dreaming? I always like to learn more so any info is great! I am enjoying this list!

my scooter is dry clutch....so if you use something formulated for wet.....can it do any damage?
Title: Re: Which brand of oil do you use?

As mentioned above, I have clocked over 12,000 miles using this oil with no problems & As "JustWantToRide" indicated "they both provide extremely similar engine protection". And as I mentioned, this is what Honda uses on there syntrifical (dry) clutch scooters.  I don't think it will cause damage but you (we) may be paying more money than we need to pay. Happy New Year everyone!!

No damage will occur. But if you use scooter oil (dry clutch) for wet clutch, you will have some slippage of the clutch. Scooter specific oil are more slippery than the one for wet clutch bikes. By the way, I just have my oil changed yesterday. Delo Gold

Red Line in engine and gearbox and going double stints (4,000 KM) on engine oil with no issues.  The engine uses no oil as indicated by the dipstick and it comes out still quite clean looking (yes, I know "looks" can be deceiving but is still a good indication of the oil's usage).  I think this performance is mostly a tribute to how well the rings are seated in my People 250 and to not running the scoot' wide open very much.  I'm impressed with the Kymco engine as a whole.  Design and materials are on a par with the Japanese motorbikes and scooters I've owned (>25).

As mentioned by someone here in this post, I use 10-40W as per climate (wich depends on temperature). Southern Spains temperature is very smooth almost all year around, ranging 50s(winter)-80s(summer). Castrol is my choice.
Now, I´ve got a question wich bothers me a little: "Is Slick 50 ok used on scooters? My recent purchased scooter is Kymco downtown 300I (6 months). Thnxs.

do not use slick 50 or other addatives with teflon etc. We have a very small reserve capacity and small journals etc. Anything that could even slightly gum up etc can be a severe issue with these. Just keep it clean and change often....................

Since Shell bought Pennzoil and Quaker State in 2002 and acquired Slick fifty the formulation has been changed. It has not had Teflon in it for quite some time. I still would not use any additives though.

Right! your oil is a complete formulation with all the necessary additives in it. It's a complete food! However, additives is a biiig money maker for big companies. It's very simple to do.  Repackage an ordinary oil, sponsor a race, let a race driver endorse it and whala! instant money! Haha!  Only a few "concerned individuals" will ask for lab tests, etc.. The rest will just buy your product.
Title: Castrol 4T 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil in my 2005 250cc Grandvista scooter.
Post by: Verlager on February 15, 2012, 05:02:14 AM
I use Castrol 4T 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil in my 2005 250cc Grandvista. The scooter runs like a watch now, consistently and evenly at low speed and RPM. Acceleration is better, quicker. It just runs better! Castrol is half the price of the Mobil 1 4T motorcycle oil. It cost $1 more than regular car oil. Commonly available.

Castrol Syntec for the engine, Napa full Synth. gear oil for the Trans, and Golden Spectro for 2t's.  I use full Synth. in all my engines. Have for 20+ years, and not one oil related failure. I once used gas station brand 2t in my then 70cc 2t zx50, and seized before I got home. (approx 6 miles). I also agree w/ NO ADDITIVES in the oils. They are not needed anymore. Cheap oil = quicker breakdown = less protection = long walk. Dino oil = more carbon build up = more heat = long walk. 2 cents

To save cost as well as making life easier when sourcing oils, just go with car engine oil.

They work better for scooter motors as the oil does not have to deal with the gearbox and clutch.

I use 0W-40 here in Korea for the engine and 75w-90 for the gear both mobil 1. 5w-50 is not as good as 0w for cold, but the 50 weight means it will help protect a bit more at high temps.

I'm in tropical Malaysia, so 50w is proper. A friend of mine is on a 60w and he says the engine runs even better.

I use Motul Scooter Power/Expert 4T Motor Oil, on line you get it $10.00 to $11.00 according to everything I have read its the best protection for scooters. and lasts longer than regular oil.
I use everything synthetic on my bikes. Small engines that work hard and specially in the south Florida Heat. I get the best, less wear and always get top performance.
