Post by: jas67 on October 22, 2011, 01:35:31 PM: I've ridden a couple of 40 degree mornings. I have a 25 minute commute. I think with my current gear, I'm good down to freezing at least. And that is on my Moto Guzzi V7, which has no wind protection. I might be able to go even colder on the PS250.

Got to love theam hard core riders. I dont drive a car so I drive when I can but work is only 2 miles away .and walking I dont mind.

Post by: dont_tread_on_me on October 22, 2011, 09:20:33 PM: If it not snowing,I'm riding to work everyday all year.I used to be about 10 miles away now I'm about 5.5 or 6,but when its in the teens it still ballnumbing cold.However the longer you ride,the better your gear needs to be.I find that usually a pair of thermal underwear under your jeans is ok for quick runs home/work.I also use a fairly heavy ski jacket and a fleece/polyester light jacket (windproof) under that when it's supercold.A barclave under the helmet and decent gloves and I'm pretty good to go most of the winter.It's just a pain in the ass getting all wrapped up to go somewhere.

I live in the Pacific NW and have to take a ferry everyday for work and riding a motorcycle/scooter on the ferry saves me over $3000 a year so its a no brainer. Luckily our weather doesn't change much from around now until May. Unless its icy I'm riding. Just put on waterproof riding gear and I'm quite comfortable. Plus I feel I earn some toughness points riding in all weather while the "tough" Harley riders put their bikes away until the sun comes out again. ;D

Ditch that open face helmet. Full face helmet might save you some money down the road for plastic surgery and change of picture in ID/passport.

Sure the wind in your face is nice but you can rearrange your face at 25 mph as much as you can at 65 mph. I'm all about safety, and being seen, spent the money on a proper high vis jacket with armor and pants and trying to add as much lightening and safety features as possible, in the end its cheaper then the medical expenses. Just because we are on smaller bikes doesn't mean we have smaller crashes. But I digress, a bit off topic. Proper safety gear = proper weather protection.

I wear a full face all the time and have several layers of warm clothes. It helps I only live 4 miles from the office.

My scoot is my daily ride, unless it's real bad and then my wife and I share her minivan.

Although I would hate the heat of the summer there, I envy your weather the rest of the year. Esp. since during the summer here, it is usually very humid, and thunderstorms are always a threat. You can always head up to Flagstaff to escape the oppressive heat in the summer.
